June 21st, 2017 Bryce Canyon Market Area - Laundry & Showers

Near the lodge.
You can pay for showers and laundry here, as well as goods in the store.
$2.50 for 1 load of laundry, .25/5 minutes for the dryer.
Shower tokens can be purchased in the market, $3 for 8 minutes of shower time.
Showers and bathrooms are cleaned daily from 2-2:30 (closed during that time) so best to shower right after that.

June 18th, 2017 kaibab forest off of desert view dr

can access this wild spot from the scenic drive on grand canyon national park.
turn south down coconino road and drive till you see kaibab national forest signs. at first the road says no camping, but when you pass into national forest land it is fine.
a few other campers, several flat-ish spots, nice and quiet. great spot to stay while exploring the grand canyon.

June 18th, 2017 Apache NF lookout

update: found a dead dog in the bushes and about 8 deer/elk legs and body parts laying around. so, yeah.

June 17th, 2017 Apache NF lookout

good spot for one night, beautiful sunset.
a bit of highway noise and lots of traffic on the gravel road all night long. probably not good for a light sleeper, but earplugs would probably do the trick.

June 16th, 2017 Wildwood Resort

Very unique campground off the Gila River with hot pools. *Adults (14+) only* I assume it is because they allow nudity in one of the pool areas (both pool areas are fenced off and private).
we tried to go to the Gila Hotsprings private campground, but it was full for Father's day weekend, we were directed here by a guest.
a little spendy, 15$pp
the cleanest bathrooms i have ever seen at a campground, amazing showers (hot, good pressure), and lots of ammenities.
very cool place for a few nights to splurge.
note: we got in a bit after 6pm and have yet to find anyone that works here (it is the next day) we are here alone... we need change to pay and are assuming someone will show up today.

June 14th, 2017 Holloman lake Campground

very nice, quiet spot near white sands national monument. we were able to watch the sunset and easily pull in here for the night.
the only down side is that it smelled horrible (sewage type smell) for about an hour at sundown. almost enough to make us leave late night, but it went away. I'm glad we didn't leave because it is a great spot, but that was pretty gross.
all in all, a perfect free spot to visit white sands.

June 14th, 2017 Carlsbad Caverns - Visitor Center and Entrance

this is the carlsbad caverns visitor center and the location where you enter the cave.
$10usd fee to enter
you can take an elevator down to the main cave, or you can do a hike through the natural entrance. the hike in and out takes you 750ft. up/down in about a mile, but it's a comfortable hike in the cool cave temperature.
beautiful caves, very developed with lights and trails, but amazing none the less!

June 14th, 2017 Visitor Center White Sands National Monument

watching the sunset from the dunes was magical! head out to the loop and pick a dune, you won't regret it!

June 13th, 2017 Parks Ranch Campground

great free spot, very quiet at night.
hard to find (we pulled in after dark) - turn right just after mile marker 10 and before a brown historic marker sign.
we did not contact blm beforehand and didn't have an issue. if we had planned better, we would have done so.

June 13th, 2017 rest area & dump

this is a rest area with bathrooms and a dump station

June 10th, 2017 masa food cart

this taco cart is in/connected to star bar and the tacos are outstanding. this is a must do in austin!

June 8th, 2017 exit guatemala

just before the guatemala border crossing

June 7th, 2017 Parking lot by the beach at the sandy entrance

excellent free spot! talked to the police while buying ice at the oxxo, they said it was ok and safe to park for the night.
busy with locals pretty much 24hrs a day. some music at night but it wasn't going on too late. lots of beach runners in the morning.
all in all it was a nice place to stop for the night!
pay toilets and showers open till 9pm 6mxn bathroom 20mxn shower
two convenience stores near by

June 5th, 2017 Funky Burrito

very good, very big burritos (we split one between the two of us). cool little space with a nice owner who was happy to chat. we highly recommend a visit!

June 5th, 2017 Trailer Park Hotel

Price update!
100mxn per night, period. not per person, but per night! still has wifi and bathroom, shower has been removed.
we stopped here a few months ago and were charged the 120pp/night. came back to use a mechanic we liked (jose manuel, see mechanic checkin) and were pleasantly surprised with the price change!
it is still just a parking lot, but for 100mxn with wifi, bathrooms, and close to town, we aren't complaining! also, no buses came while we were here. could be time of year, but it was very quiet.

June 5th, 2017 Jose Manuel

great honest mechanic. the boss Manuel and his worker Giovanni do good work at a great price. I used them twice over a couple month period, the first time to diagnose a loud exhaust leak which ended up being a turbo gasket. Manuel found a replacement gasket in his own storage and Giovanni performed the job. he did great work, 6 hours labor and the part for 800 pesos ($40 usd).

I went back on our way north with a laundry list of 8 items i wanted done before our big trek back to Oregon. why not take advantage of mexican rates and get everything dialed for the long drive home. Giovanni got everything on m list done. 7 hours worth of work again 800 pesos. highly recommended shop! Spanish only, but the language of mechanics is universal so I'm sure it would be fine to go there without spanish.

June 3rd, 2017 Checkpoint

checkpoint is still here, we were just waved through

June 2nd, 2017 Xbulan-Ja

confirming previous post
50mxn pp to camp in the parking lot over night. river was muddy from rains so we didn't check it out.
bathroom 3mxn (super gross when we were here)
shower 6mxn
good place to stop for a night

June 2nd, 2017 exit guatemala

not sure how legit this is, but it was the only place we interacted with guatemala while crossing into mexico.
50Q to leave, got a reciept

June 2nd, 2017 Military Checkpoint

the road is blocked on one side and we went around the barrier. waved through without stopping by the military dudes.

June 2nd, 2017 Border Crossing

guatemala to mexico:
wouldn't recommend this border crossing, we took it because we were leaving from Cobán and maps sent us this way.
the last hour of driving is on a bumpy dirt road and there is another lengthy stretch of dirt road before that. there were guys on the guatemala side asking for 50q for 'road maintenence' to head toward the border crossing. the actual crossing was a bit odd, one guy looked in the front seat and checked everywhere (inside my wallet, under mats, knocking on door panels) but didn't look inside the camper at all. no stamps or paperwork on either side of the border. the military guy we spoke with wrote down our names and said he would call the people in Comitan and let them know we passed through and we could get stamps for our passports there.
will update when we get to comitan to see if it actually works out.
my suggestion: don't cross here.

June 2nd, 2017 Military Checkpoint

stopped us for an inspection. invited one of us in the camper to assist/watch so we knew there was no funny business. nice guys, sent us on our way.

May 30th, 2017 Oasis

very nice and welcoming staff, awesome spot on the river, clean bathrooms/accommodations, decent restaurant - overall an awesome stay, would come back for sure.

May 29th, 2017 Bus Stop To Lanquin

we had to pay 30q each, still cheaper than tourist vans

May 29th, 2017 Zephyr Lodge

left the rig in Cobán and came to stay here. not very friendly staff, everything is over priced, not very good food. not a great experience - we left and went to the Oasis the next day and had a much better time.
not sure the cost for camping, but I'm sure it has gone up

May 29th, 2017 Parqueo Los Tres / Hotel El Portal

parked here to camp for a night before Semuc Champey, 40Q for 2 people in a camper. it wasn't the quietest night ever, but all you need is earplugs.
to store it in the lot he wanted 40Q per night as well. as long as all is well when we get back (safe/undamaged) I'd say it is worth the 40Q

May 24th, 2017 Red's Bar & Restaurant

Small sports bar run by a guy from Newcastle. You can get tacos and gyros there and the gyros are pretty good! pita made from scratch, they disinfect all the veggies, yogurt sauce is yummy too. one of the more affordable meals we had in antigua. (p.s. the 'mini' gyro is really full sized)

May 22nd, 2017 Hacienda Tecpan

all you can eat buffet, 30q for breakfast 40q for lunch. good food, lots of choices, comes with a horchata drink too. nice clean place, good lunch stop.

May 21st, 2017 las chinitas

delicious food, wide variety, great space, a great lunch or dinner spot.

May 17th, 2017 Agua Viva

filled garafon and gas station (same parking lot) let us fill our water tank as well for free even though we weren't getting gas
