March 24th, 2020 Auberge la bonne etoile

Great hotel with clean rooms and wifi. Running water, shower, TV and fan. We paid 6000 CFA for two people. If you get room 1-4 you will likely get wifi signal in the room. Breakfast is available, but make sure you ask what’s included in it first. They promised us omelet, but ran out of eggs. After some discussion we lowered the price from 1000 to 500 for coffee, bread and butter (which is still quite pricey). But we were happy with the room.

March 18th, 2020 Savannah Lodge

A very simple, but nice hotel tun by Hussein a local guy who is also doing community work. There are a few typical huts for rent with fans. Bathroom and shower are outside. The double room is 60 cedis, but we negotiated to 100 for 2 nights. There are many children living on the premises, some of them orphans who Hussein takes care of. We also talked to the park guards and they let us come to the park for two days paying just once.

March 4th, 2020 Embassy of Ivory Coast

Very friendly people and overall nice experience. We submitted the documents mentioned in the previous messages, and as non-Europeans even (surprisingly) got a better rate: 26000 each. The visas should be ready in 2 days.

March 3rd, 2020 Ghana Embassy

Nice staff, nice experience. We got our 1 month visas in less than 24 hours for 15000 SFA. Submitted 4 copies of everything, but the lady returned us some passport copies and booking confirmations.
** There was a lady staying at our hostel who didn’t get the visa and was told it was only for Benin residents. Our experience was different, but it might be a bit of a lottery.

February 26th, 2020 Benin/Togo border

No 8-day visa at the border anymore! We had the worst experience. Since we didn’t have the e-visa the officers took our passports and said we could pick them up in Cotonou and get the 8-day visa there as well. Today we were at the office in Cotonou and the 8-day visa is impossible to get there. Besides, the passports have to remain at the office for 3 days in order for the visa to be issued.

February 22nd, 2020 Notse

3000 for simple quarter of chicken with rice, so not cheap at all. Nice garden though. We didn’t stay for the night.

February 22nd, 2020 New Robinson Plage

Nice hotel, but looks like prices are up. We were charged 6000 (2 ppl and a van) for sleeping on the parking lot. Seemed really expensive, but we got there after sunset and stayed one night. Next morning we went to Coco Beach 5 km south. More space, cheaper (4000 total) and cheaper bar/ food too.

February 19th, 2020 Hotel Elephants

We were told camping was free, but before leaving they charged us 2000 per night for the use of shower. So make sure you talk the details over. Not very clean, no light in the shower/ bathroom and the door can’t be locked. Ok wifi. Worked out for us after crossing Burkina border as we were exhausted, but not really worth the money.

February 17th, 2020 Sama Camp

Nice place to stay a night. Pretty basic: simple toilet, shower with a bucket, no wifi, but quiet and secure. A bit difficult to find, but maps.me does a good job of taking you (almost) there. Friendly French owner and locals. 4000 per night (2 ppl and a van).

February 17th, 2020 Civil Protection

Super nice people who let us stay without any problem. They even invited us to have dinner with them and let us use the wifi. Great experience!

February 15th, 2020 the sleeping camel

The new location is pretty small, so it is more like an expensive restaurant for expats with a few rooms and small space for parking/camping. Cold outside shower, very slow wifi and quite noisy as last customers around midnight. The staff is nice, it’s secure and overall it was ok.

February 14th, 2020 Embassy of Ghana

Update: 2 days after we left the passports (Friday) the counselor decided he also wanted to have an interview with us on Monday, but our 3-day transit visa for Burkina starts on Monday, so we decided to skip Ghana and go straight to Togo. The 3 times we went to this embassy we were the only visitors, and the staff was not helpful and really inefficient. At least they gave us the money back when we said we wouldn’t wait till the interview.

February 12th, 2020 Embassy of Ghana

This place is in wrong location - it is located at 12.63109, -8.02036

February 12th, 2020 Embassy of Ghana

The embassy moved to a new building near the US embassy. The right coordinates are 12°37′51.92″N 08°01′13.3″W
The experience was ok. Make sure you have all the copies with you. We were asked for hotel reservations. There is a cyber cafe and a copy shop not far if you need to print/copy something.
The hours are 8:30 - 14:00 Mon-Thur and 8:30-12:00 Fri.

February 8th, 2020 Auberge Saada

The guy asked for 1000 ouguias for 2 people and a van. We didn’t even want to bargain because there is no internet, very little shade and nothing else. So basically you just pay for a warm shower and toilet. We preferred to save the money and camp behind a check point.

February 5th, 2020 Pharmavet Clinique Vétérenarie

A nice vet clinic with medicine, shampoos and anti-flea stuff for cats and dogs (not easy to find in Africa). Dr. Ba is friendly and professional. We took our cat here after his old wound got infected.
It’s better to call first to make sure the doctor is at the clinic.

February 5th, 2020 Auberge Samira

Nice clean hostel with very friendly and helpful staff. Zakaria is the best! He took cake of our cat when we went to Chinguetti for a few days and helped to find a vet/ make phone calls. Hot showers, ok Internet, washing machine.

*If you are camping, watch out for your stuff. One night we had a guy jump the wall from with the neighboring house and try to steal from our car while we were sleeping.

January 27th, 2020 Yo-Yo (amazing Cote d’Ivoire cuisine)

Just an addition, there is a menu with fixed prices and with two people can eat well with 6-7 euros both.

January 27th, 2020 Yo-Yo (amazing Cote d’Ivoire cuisine)

It doesn’t look special on the outside, but the food is really good here. Grilled chicken and fish with mandioca/ rice/ fried plantains (you can chose) salad and salsas. Best food we’ve had in a while.

January 19th, 2020 Border / Checkpoint

Entering Mauritania from Morocco. All good. We were the first in line to get the visa and it went relatively fast (1 hour without a fixer).
However the insurance guy scammed us. We should have paid 520 ouguias, but he charged us 680. It was too late to change anything when we found out, but I strongly recommend to get the insurance with the younger guy in the same office (just left of the road) as the old guy is a scammer.

January 12th, 2020 On the cliff, fabulous beach

The military said we couldn’t stay overnight as soon as we got there.

December 21st, 2019 Vallée de Ziz

The parking was somewhat crowded so we stayed in the desert across the road behind the ruins of a house. Very quite and nice. No one bothered us.

August 23rd, 2019 Wild spot at Una National Park

Nice grassy field next to Una river. The entrance is right after you pass a small beach. There is some shade, and you can access the water. We spent one night and an entire day here and didn’t pay anything. Although the road is very close there are no cars after sunset.

August 15th, 2019 Beautiful beach on Drina river

There is a beach called Rajska Plaja bear Bratinac. After you pass the established beach and cafes and continue left about 200 meters and there are nice places with shade to camp. Don’t park too close to the water as the river goes up and down because of the dam in Visegrad. It’s a very nice spot to spend a night before/ after visiting Srebrenica.

July 29th, 2019 Lake Ohrid wild spot

Beautiful spot on lake Ohrid. Not much trash, nice beach and some shade. Pass the resort and after 300 meters the spot is on the left. We didn’t pay anything. During the day some locals come to enjoy the beach and picnic. Quite at night.

June 18th, 2019 Quiet spot next to the river

About 800 meters from the main road there are a few spots on the river that are good for a night or two. The unpaved road is good, no 4x4 needed. There are little beaches to get in the water. The only drawback - mosquitoes.

June 6th, 2019 Parking at Beykoz Koruzu Park

We found a nice flat parking at Dilruba Restaurant inside Beykoz Park.
We stayed here one night for free. After midnight they close gate until early in the morning.
Water in the park, and toilette at restaurant.

May 21st, 2019 7 kita gas station with park

A very nice gas station to spend a night. Bathrooms, makeshift shower (just a hose from the wall, but worked perfectly for us). A very green little park with children’s playground on the facilities. Very friendly staff!
