March 31st, 2021 Tucker Bar & Eater

Great food and drinks at this small and friendly restaurant. Tirau is quite a touristy town, this place was full of locals. They know where to eat. Fresh and tasty.

January 27th, 2021 Hayes Common

Nice restaurant in Hamilton, away from the hubbub, plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Good breakfast and lunch menu. Open 7.30am - 3.30pm Sun-Tues and till 10pm Wed-Sat.

January 13th, 2021 Tokerau Beach Freedom Camp

Nice spot down Ramp Road. Loads of places to freedom camp right next to the beach. While there are restrictions in place these do not seem to be applied as there are people in tents, with dogs and clearly not certified self contained. There is a drop toilet by Coca-cola Lake and 5 regular toilets at the far right hand side of the camping spot, across a picnic field. Here you have running water and an outside shower. Water is not potable.

January 12th, 2021 Ahipara Family Camp

A lovely campsite right next to the beach. Monty, the owner is super friendly and all very relaxed. $15pppn

October 27th, 2020 Manawhero campsite

DOC Camp site just outside outside Ohakune. Peaceful location in the bush, next to a river with views of Ruapehu. loved it.

October 25th, 2020 Te Wera Valley Lodge

Great campsite along the Forgotten Highway Route 43. Quiet spot, good facilities, would be great for kids - mini assault course. Also very strong wifi. Unpowered site was $26 for two people.

October 19th, 2020 Cape Egmont Boat Club

Private camping ground right next to Cape Egmont Lighthouse. $10 per night per site. Nice location.

October 12th, 2020 Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve

Freedom camping for certified self contained vehicles. maximum space for 4 vehicles. no one here when we came. Right next to the beach and the reserve and all the birdlife on the estuary. Kapiti Island looms in front. A perfect spot.

October 10th, 2020 Clyde Quay Car park

A great place to park, leave your van for the day, wander around the city, enjoy a meal and then crash. It's $30 for 24 parking, and while there are free freedom camping spots further out, I think this is good value if you want to spend the day in the city itself. Te Papa is a short walk, nice cafe and free wifi, there is also a Sunday market next to it.

There are toilets nearby if needed (closed 11pm -7am) and the Freyburg Center is a quick walk where you can get a shower ($3). Cafes also near Freyburg center.

September 21st, 2020 Culverden Domain Camp

Nice spot in Culverden park. Room for 2 CSC vehicles from 8pm to 8am. max 2 nights in 30 days. kids play park, covered tables. Town with FourSquare and cafes within close walking. Dump station, drinking water and toilets close by.

Good spot by the lake. There is a drop toilet here too, which is on the left as you pull in, over the wooden footbridge and set back a bit.

September 9th, 2020 Waihao Box

Free camping for CSC vans, a beautiful spot where the river Waihao meets the ocean. check out the 1900s box built to ensure the cobbled beach didn't hinder the river's flow. Enter via Horsnells Road. There is no bridge on the maps.me route we were originally given.

September 8th, 2020 Portobello Village Tourist Park

August 21st, 2020 Possum Lodge

What a great place, down by the lake, with plenty of trees and birds flying around (loads of Tui). If you're headed out to Doubtful Sound it's a 5 minute walk through the Beeches and along the river to the harbour. All the facilities you need, super friendly owners and good wifi. The facilities have everything you need and its $42 for two for the night. The Church Bar and Restaurant is a quick walk and serves great food - especially the Cod and chips.

August 14th, 2020 Man of the Trees, Kingston

Camp spot for CSC vehicles right by the lake. Beautiful spot.

August 12th, 2020 Paradise Trust

This is an amazing place where you can rent rustic cabins and enjoy a little time relaxing in beautiful surroundings with great views of the mountains. Set up as a trust to enable ordinary people to enjoy a little of early pioneer life. Some cabins have outside fire baths which are amazing. This place is not expensive, and I would highly recommend supporting it. Check out the options at www.paradise trust.org.nz

August 10th, 2020 Sylvan DOC Campsite

One of the prettiest campsites, well laid out in a flat valley, next to the river with views all around. Plenty of sunshine, great in winter. There's a walk to Sylan Lake (2.2 km one way) but sadly it was closed when we were here.

August 9th, 2020 Kinloch DOC Campsite

DOC Camping right on the lake, beautiful views of the mountains, picnic benches, Kinloch Lodge for food and drinks next door, little pier for fishing. $15 pppn (adults)

Phone and 4G reception here was surprisingly good.

Further down the road, just out of Kinloch , you can camp responsibly i.e. freedom camping for Certified Self Contained vehicles and while there are not many spaces along the road to Greenstone to park up, you can park and camp the night at the Greenstone carpark where there are various walks, including the very beautiful 16km loop track to Rere Lake - highly recommended. There are also drop toilets at Greenstone.

August 1st, 2020 Oamaru Top 10

Lovely campsite within walking distance of town. Direct access to the park which has an aviary, ponds, ducks, ponds (no bread just grain) fernery and play park. We really like Oamaru - everyone was really friendly, we got to see the yellow eyed penguins (go early as they come in about 2 hours before dark) Also had great food here (Badger & Mackerel, Cucina and Harbour Street Collective Cafe)

They will refill your gas bottles here, including the smaller ones as long as they are still legal!

July 27th, 2020 Patterson Ponds

Freedom camping along the Tekapo River, below the Tekapo Canal. Beautiful location. CSC vehicles only, although there is a toilet here.

July 26th, 2020 Lake Alexandrina

Beautiful place on the lake, amidst a load of classic NZ bachs. We were the only people camping here, despite multitudes in Tekapo. There is a gate on the main road and the sign says 4WD only but the gravel road down is well maintained and I think this is to deter most campers.

Fishing on the lake (need a licence, available at the post office in Tekapo) Basic toilets and a shower block - bring your own water/bucket.

$20 per vehicle per night.

July 1st, 2020 Tutaki Bakery little Van

Great coffee pies and bread. we didn't try the sweet offering but they looked really good. if you're passing Murchison stop and enjoy.

June 26th, 2020 PuPu Hydro Wallway

A really interesting walk through the forest. A gold mining water race used as a sluice for gold-miningwas built in the hillside in 1901 and the water rights were later used to bring the first power to the Golden Bay area in 1929. Walk the zigzag path to the top of the hill, see the penstock and follow the race the 1.7km to the river. The walk down offers great views out to Golden Bay, waterfalls and plenty of places to picnic. If you're interested in engineering and enjoy a good walk (just under 7km loop), you will enjoy this. You also get to see the machinery that works this power station and read about its restoration following a power short in 1981.

June 25th, 2020 Patarau River eachfront

Side road/track leads to beachfront field. Ideal for freedom camping. No facilities.
