Description

Parking bay on the dirt track, at 1800masl. Spectacular views to Lonquimay crater and Crater Navidad. Hardly any traffic, dead quiet, cold nights. Access: From road 181 in the valley, 30km east of Curacautin, turn left. After a few kilometres (right before tarmac ends), turn left again drive up until the ski area (now on gravel). Pass that on the right hand side and go further uphill (now on ash). Spot is about 1km behind the pass.

camping or making a fire is not allowed. Not even with a stove.
Spend the night here. It was cold but there was no wind. One of the best nights of my life. I arrived for sunset, I saw the stars at night and the dawn. An incredible experience. No vehicle passed until morning.

Once I had dismantled the tent, the park rangers approached me to tell me that it was illegal to light a fire in any park and that I could be arrested if the police (carabineros de chile) saw me.

Fantastic place to spend the night! There are not a lot of recommendations about this place, but doing a sunset and sunrise next to the Mirador de Volcanes (overseeing 6 volcanos) is a must. Just make sure that you return the same way - We continued the route and after the volcano decent the road became horrible with a lot of fesh fesh. Plus, the suggested round-trip road (R-801) is a private property and undrivable, unless you want a lot of scretches on your 4x4. We had to back-up and return back.

Cycling up from Chequenco, we camped at the mirador for the night. We put our tent more on the left and were partly surrounded by volcanic rocks. No wind at night but cold. The wind started again at about 6 am. Amazing place to stay and so silent !

As said below, nice place with great views but really cold and windy in the evening and night (~5° when we were there).

oh, we had a lovely time here. Woke up to that view, did yoga on the viewing platform, hicked down to see the lava streams better. And the next day hiked to Navidad. Lots of wind but gorgeous view of 6(?) volcanoes. And cold. We drove up from Malalcahuello with our Peugeot Boxer pretty easy. But were advised not to try to decend after the mirador. Passersby said you need a 4WD for that.

Otherworldy views on the vulcanos and the lava fields. only few people, no entrance fee to pay....perhaps because its not high season any more?
very quiet, no noise, like in the desert.....fantastic

definitely recommended

Stunning drive and views of Volcan Lonquimay. Heavy snow fall blocked this road well into second week of December so we hiked to this spot.

Amazing view!! Road until there is wonderful and easy, even with a heavy motorhome.

It's indeed a wonderful place! Pretty sunset and sunrise. Some people came to enjoy the mirador, but it didnt bother us. Be careful on the road to here, the sand on the sides is pretty loose! (We got stuck pretty bad..)

This may be just a parking bay for a mirador, but it is one of our favourite wild-camp views ever. A couple of cars stopped by in the afternoon, otherwise we had the place to ourselves. No vehicles passed in the night. Amazing spot for a spectacular sunset. Just down the road is a short hike to Crater Navidad which is worthwhile. No facilities.Free.

Extraordinary route to take around Lonquimay volcano. Very good large Ripio. Starts from the Malalcahuello ski resort and the ripio goes until Troyo village on the BioBio river (lake).
