Description

Self catering cottage and campsite situated on a farm in an exquisite countryside setting with horses, chickens, geese and friendly dogs and cats. Natural, quiet and peaceful, this establishment is stunning and also has safe, accessible and good walking trails around the farm. Not too far from Mbala and Lake Tanganyika, this lovely spot is ideal for visiting and exploring the surrounding areas without the busyness of the towns, and us also an ideal place for some downtime, time to recoup and 'to get away from it all'. Accessibility is via an approximately 3 km dirt track from the D1 road to the cottage and campsite, easily traversed with 2x4 vehicle even in rainy season. The price is US$ 50 for the cottage per night including hot shower and running toilet with wood provided for the donkey boiler or US$ 10 pppn camping with an available hot shower and toilet. The cottage is serviced daily and includes cutlery, crockery, towels, mosquito net, microwave, gas oven and plates, fridge and its own bathroom with hot shower via donkey boiler and everything one needs for a comfortable stay. Drinking water is from a spring, boiling optional. No Wi-Fi, but there is local network available. Limited, but sufficient flat ground is available for rooftop vehicles. Hosts Jackie and Kevin are wonderfully hospitable who will make you feel welcome, at home and well looked after, as well as provide good knowledge of the area and what to see and visit if needing anything. Highly recommend this place and all it offers - a must stay if passing this side of the country from one night or more. It's hard to leave once here! WhatsApp or call Jackie on +260 966 917 545 or email [email protected] before arriving to ensure availability and/or make a reservation. Cash only and Zambian Kwacha rates available on request.

Camping at Flower and fern cottage...

Is like being ten years old and travelling to your aunts cottage in the countryside, The cottage and garden are lovingly cared for with passion, neat tidy but still a country cottage,. You ask your aunt if you can camp outside in the field and she makes it happen, she brings you drinks and sandwiches and you explore the amazing wild gardens, walking down to the lake and stand staring at the cliffs wondering if you climb them what will await you at the top. At night you gaze up at the clear view of the milky way and life is just perfect.

In the morning you wake up and must leave but forever longing to return and live forever in a childlike fantasy.

Jackie is the most amazing host, she even walked down to us with some beers after we mentioned we had run out.

The only problem with Flower and fern cottage is having leave .

We went to Kalambo falls and visited the moto moto museum, and easily made it back here for an extra night.

Lovely peaceful place! Ablutions are new and the donkey shower is nice and warm. It's so quiet. We made bread on the campfire with fresh herbs from the garden and really enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately the owners weren't there but we were well taken care off by Patrick, the horses and the dogs.

We wanted to stay 1 night, ended up 5 nights! Fantastic spot for camping. Very nice ablution block. You can hike on the farm. But the best are the lovely hosts, you feel like home. If you have well behaving pets you can bring them with. Fresh eggs available.

We camped here for one night on our way to Nakonde border. Very lovely campsite with perfectly clean, new ablution and hot shower (donkey)! The host Jackie was very friendly and made us feel welcome and ”at home” immediately. Would’ve loved to stay longer if we wouldn’t have been on a schedule to Tz. Lovely, friendly dogs, horses, chickens. And fresh eggs available for buying, too. Perfect. Beautiful farm and very peaceful. $10/pppn. Highly recommend this place.

We camped here on the very quiet "Flowers & Fern" campsite for 10 days. A wonderful time surrounded by the African bush with absolutely lovable hosts Jackie and Kevin! The toilet and shower are perfect and absolutely clean, shower really hot (wood-burning in the evening). Two spaces have been leveled for vehicles, one in the shade and one in the sun. Bush walks. Jackie sells fresh chicken eggs too, great! Access also possible for "BigRigs" without any problems. We would come back at any time on occasion.

Report Check-In

We camped for 3 days. We really enjoyed the beautiful place and the very warm welcoming from Jacky and Kevin. There are now spacious new ablutions with hot water (donkey) at the camping area.
All the other wonderful descriptions are still valid.

The name of the farm is Saize Enterprise. I will make a mark on iOverlander where the entrance gate is because it is not easy to find. We enjoyed our 2 nights at the Saize farm.

Kevin and Jackie are great hosts and make you feel very welcome on their farm. We could easily spent some days here as it is peaceful and quiet. There are plenty of animals who are very enthusiastic to keep you company and we cannot decide which one is our biggest friend. You camp on a grassy area in front of the cottage and you can use the abolution of the cottage. Hot water in the evening or morning if you want.

The turnoff to the farm is exactly 16 km after the turnoff from the old north road to the D1, behind a great grey wall with a big gate. Do contact Jackie in advance as it is on a big working farm at, so she can organize and give you directions. Also try their eggs (and other things that are good to eat. They all are delicious.)
