Description

Argentinian side of the Paso Raballos crossing. Exiting Chile (11km West of this point) we had the usual easy experience. Entering Argentina they took our fruit, dairy and vegetables. It's a very quiet border, and is the southernmost vehicle crossing for the Carretera Austral. Road is good gravel, easy passable from Cochrane and travels through some gorgeous scenery in Parque Patagonia. Remember to bring your Argentinian reciprocity papers if you need them to enter. It's a long way back to internet! Chile: Horario De 08:00 a 20:00 horas desde Abril a Noviembre;De 08:00 a 22:00 horas desde Diciembre a Abril (http://www.pasosfronterizos.gov.cl/cf_roballos.html), Argentina: 24 horas, (http://www.gendarmeria.gob.ar/pasos-chile/rodolfo-roballos.html)

Now road is not that good, doable with any car but long (30-40km/h with normal car on both sides of the border). Still beautiful views thought.

Entering Chile with a dog is possible without any problems, although dogs are not allowed in the national park (24.03.2023)

This was our third crossing to Argentina and ironically the quickest one, altough everything is done manually. There was noone but us and the officer did good and fast job registering us. He was friendly but not very talkative. No car inspection, he just let us in after doing all the paperwork.

Report Check-In

Such a charming border! The interior of the office hasn't changed in decades. I almost wished the process took longer so I could look around more! Done in 5 mins. Nice to have a stamp of Argentina in our passports after all, nice surprise!

Report Check-In

Argentine border station. One man show run by the Gendarmerie. At 3 pm we were the 5th car at the border. All manual paperwork, you even get a stamp in your passport. The whole process incl. closing of TIP Tool less then 5 minutes.

Report Check-In

Crossing from Chile to Argentina with UK-registered motorcycle. Smooth process , although a little slow as they do everyone one at a time (there were 4 vehicles when I did it). Border staff were very friendly and helpful.

Beautiful views on both sides of the border, but the Argentinian side came with some pretty serious wind. Not so fun on gravel with a motorcycle!

Report Check-In

best experience crossing a border! as they don't have any computer everything is done by hand, filling out forms and using carbon paper to make copies! the officer was super friendly and even let me take photos. there is also a cord phone on the wall. your kids will think they are in a museum! he took one look in our van didn't open anything.

Report Check-In

If you go from Chile to Argentina and would like to head towards Los Antiguos over RP41 try to inquire if the road is passable - it is a high-mountain road along first 40kms close to Monte Zeballos up to Estancia Frontera. Even in late spring it might be blocked by snow and there are no warning signs at all.

Report Check-In

Argentina border post. Little frequented and allow a little time to pass, because all the papers are done manually. Super friendly customs officers.

poste frontière d’Argentine. peu fréquentée et prévoyez un peu de temps pour passer, car tous les papiers se font manuellement. douaniers super sympas.

Report Check-In

We left Argentina direction Chile. friendly staff, but this was the first time they inspected our motorhome when we LEFT a country! He asked if we had any alcohol and was obviously disappointed because we had only an already open bottle of wine in our fridge.

Report Check-In

Exiting Argentina:
The process itself was quick and easy
BUT BEWARE: The office said that alcoholic drinks were illegal to take into Chile so he would have to take them from us to "prevent" problems for us entering Chile. Only after 4 times telling him that it is not illegal he let us pass.

Entering Chile:
We passed into Chile with a dog. No problems at all, although dogs are not allowed in the national park. They stamped our documents and the ones of the dog and did not have a look in the vehicle. Of course they did not take our beers, as stated from the Argentinian officer.

Report Check-In

They were only two carabineros. They done 10 people in 30 minutes - really fast and easy. Old school border.

Report Check-In

Open, very friendly. Easy crossing but have to wait for them to phone head office

Report Check-In

Super sweet! They stayed for 50 days allready there so we gave them a bag of chips

Report Check-In

Border crossing Argentina to Chile: Very friendly officers, easy and fast process (though manual).

Report Check-In

Great border with many friendly people ! Especially the Chilean border !

Report Check-In

Super friendly staff in this remote border crossing. Takes a little longer because the whole process is done “hard copy” (computer links). Same restriction as for other Chile/Argentina crossings. But best of all is the route you will take to get here - Argentina 41 / Chile X83. In our opinion one of the best drives in Patagonia. Road conditions were better than the southern Carretera Austral when we drove it in Jan 23.

Report Check-In

went smoothly and fast. Friendly people. Small check of the vehicle. It is forbidden to bring fruit, eggs and meat. They check, but not good.

Report Check-In

Border open. Fast and friendly, especially if you arrive just before lunch (the lunch time wine was on the table). Very superficial check. No man’s land has a couple of sketchy muddy sections that would need care on a heavy bike. Road on Argentine side is annoyingly corrugated but no difficulty.

Report Check-In

Very fast and easy border crossing coming from Chile. Friendly officers. They didn't check our car and didn't ask about food.

Report Check-In

Training a new guy, thorough search of our camper took all vegetables and meat. First time this happened at an Ar border, officer claimed that it was a requirement of this border crossing. BEWARE. His starched khakis should have warned us. No dog, so hide your food!

Report Check-In

Coming from Chile at 13h, all done in 20min. The guy didn't ask anything about food and didn't check the car👍
Added picture of vegetables tolerated when entering Argentina from Chile (seen at the Chilean border)
Road not that good on both sides, still doable with any car but it'll be between 20 and 40km/h max

Report Check-In

Report Check-In

A really quick entrance to Argentina, when we arrived at the office, around 21:00. The officer didn't even check our van and after he registered our info, he just opened the barrier for us! Amazingly quick process!

Report Check-In

Fast and easy border crossing. Fast dog document control and pass port stamp. 10 minutes. No check in the car!

Report Check-In

One of the more unfriendly (though fast and easy) border crossings we’ve had. The first thing the officer asked us for was proof of car insurance. Went out to the van to get it and when I brought it in, he never looked at it. Filled out our TIP twice Bc the first time it wasn’t dark enough, then came out to check the van. Said he was gonna look for fruits and veggies, we didn’t say anything (had a few we would prefer not to have thrown away), he opened one drawer and that was it. Didn’t open the fridge. Our compost bag full of all the veggie scraps actually fell out of the van when we opened the door for him, in clear view. He couldn’t have cared less- didn’t take that or anything else. There was super weak open WiFi in the building- enough to get a few messages but not enough to load our email.

Also of all the (many) perros we have met on this trip, the one here was the least friendly- growled at us the whole time and seemed to just be waiting for a reason to bite. Beautiful drive to and from here though!

Report Check-In

we went through with a RWD(propulsion) 7m motorhome, Argentina--->Chili. from Lago Posadas to Cochrane.
Absolutely beautiful landscape!!!
from canyons with greenish and reddish dried mountains to the green grassy valleys on the Chilean side.
But steep roads and In bad shape sometimes.
no problems with the customs
no vehicle check for veggies in chili....

Entering Argentina with our chilean car: No problem at all!
They just ask if we have vegetables and fruits and just took a quick look at the car. All in all very easy!
In november open till 20:00

fast and easy, very welcoming people.
maybe they are happy to meet people.

the road to come here is very beautifull through the Patagonia NP. The park is also very good, many wildlife, many hikes possibility, and few people.
worth it! must do!

Chile —> Argentina
No English spoken at all at this border. Not a problem if your papers are perfect but gets a little difficult if anything is out of the ordinary (we had an “authorisation to exit” while we wait for our padron so explaining that took a bit of time, but they were nice and friendly). Had a very quick look in our car- let us keep our bananas, pears and potatoes but took our salami.

Report Check-In

Chile -> Argentina : easiest border, the officer let us crossed with few vegetables. the road after is not that bad, we didn't have any trouble with our Kombi.
if you need cash, know that there is no ATM before Calafate accepting foreign cards. you can exchange Chilean pesos at the hostel Las Hortequas for 1 Chilean pesos = 20 Argentinian pesos.
or do a Western Union at the post office of G. Gregores but the maximum amount is 15,000 pesos.

Report Check-In

very nice officer his name is daniel perez, friendly. he was talking to my korean partner while doing his job about taekwndo martial arts etc, and he said argentinians like taekwando and he do it... and when he knew im from philippines he said "manny pacquiao" and then he laughed. very fast
and no inspection. i was issued by consulate 30 days multiple entries but he gave me 90 days multiple entries.. same with my korean partner.. and we took a photo..😊😊

entering from Chilean side. fast and easy. no control in the car.
be careful about the fuel, time and get some dollars or pesos Arg.
the track is really bad and long (2h30) until the next "City" (15 people leave here)
exept that the view is AMAZING and very wild. you can see a lot of animals

Report Check-In

The road from Argentina is pretty abysmal. Thoroughly washboarded. Some deep gravel and a little sand. The big puddle wasn’t a problem. It’s totally doable, but it is bone rattling. We are two up on a BMW R80.

Report Check-In

Entering Argentina. Super easy and quick crossing. They didn’t ask to look in our bike at all. Bathroom around the back and open WiFi connection.

Friendly. Spoke English. Super easy. No inspection. Supposedly close at 10pm. We got there at 9:50pm. 11km from Chilean border gate.

Entering Argentina. Very nice young officer. Did paperwork all by hand in less than 20 minutes and did not ask about food at all.

very nice guys at this crossing. it is New Year's day. After all the paper work and we got through the gate we gave him a small bottle of whiskey. He said Happy New year.

Chile->Argentina. We could really recommend this border. Very nice view, good road and very friendly people. Don‘t miss this road! No problem for passing with chilean car that we bought in santiago. There are two water holes at the argentina side, but it was adventure and fun. Look first where you can pass this holes, there are some big stones in it. No Problem with 2WD. (Van, Suzuki APV)

super easy border took maybe 15 minutes for the 4 of Ys and our dog. he opened the van but never got in it seemed to care. he said he would gave been happy to accept copies of our dog papers so that we could reuse them for other borders. the road was easy and nice highly recommended.

Small immigration and customs office. The insurance document for our vehicle was checked thoroughly.

Report Check-In

they were training a new guy so the paperwork took some time but for the rest it was very fast. 2min inspection of the van.

Report Check-In

Smooth entry into Argentina. Handed over passports, car title and vehicle insurance. Border official prepared our car TIP paperwork, asked if we had meats, eggs, dairy, fruits and veggies with us and lightly inspected our truck. You can bring over sealed cold cuts and dairy products. Friendly border officer and quick border crossing. He likes sweets! ;)

Report Check-In

We passed through this border control coming from Chile with a German owned motor home with only a Podar for authorisation to drive and had no problems at all. Took half hour in total with paperwork, one of the guys looked around the van but didn't check fridge or ask to see food. Very friendly guys. Road going from border to Ruta 40 is way worse than the Chilean side, doable in a 2wd and heavy motor home but probably the most uncomfortable drive so far.

Report Check-In

You MUST have current upto date insurance for Argentina to cross here. This is a military outpost not a regular border crossing. We had insurance for Argentina but it had expired since we crossed into Chile. We promised we would get insurance once we got in but they said NO! We had entered Argentina previously without insurance no problem and just bought it when we got into Mendoza we explained this and they still said no not good enough. We finally went back to the Chile border where they were super friendly and tried to help us buy it online, but of course this was impossible for a US car. We had to drive all the way back to Cochrane over washboarded roads to get insurance the next morning. This must be a common problem because there is a little Internet cafe in the south east corner of the main square that smiled and laughed and said yes we know what you need. We went back to the border the next day and they didn't even look at the insurance nor did they search our car.

Fast and easy entry into Argentina. Stamped our vehicle paperwork (provided by the Chilean Aduana), and asked about any food we had. After a quick look in the car he was satisfied and simply told us to eat the two bananas which were the only contraband food items we were carrying.

Report Check-In

Easy and fast crossing border (from chile to argentina). Only 1officer, very friendly. Very quick inspection of the car. No problem.

Report Check-In

Friendly and quick. Check of some personal belongings and did not take anything of dairy or wurst. 20 min pass

Report Check-In

Very small rural crossing. Three very friendly national police officers work there. We were greeted by one of them who informed us we would have to wait a while as they were processing a group tour. There was a clean bathroom. Once it was our turn it was fairly quick (they hand write everything down- no computers). One of the police officers inspected our entire van (this was the first time we had been inspected leaving Argentina). He did a detailed search of half our van, and was very inquisitive about our US medications. There were no issues, so he smiled and let us go.

Report Check-In

Entering Argentina it took 20 minutes for the paperwork and a very quick look inside the camper. Ask if we had any vegetables and we said we had a very small amount so he just waived us on.

Right now the road through Chile Chico is in better shape than Paso Roballos. Lots of washboard now.

Report Check-In

Entering Argentina took us about 15 min. The officer looked quickly inside the Van, saw the dog, asked for papers, stamped it and off we go. Didn't look or ask for fruits, veggies etc. apparently you need to get your dog papers stamped when leaving chile?! We didn't know and he let us pass anyways. Friendly officer. Very quiet border crossing.

We crossed here once and on our way back up we took chile Chico thinking that road might be better. It was worse and slower because of deep corrugation from more traffic. Paso roballo was much faster.
