Description

The dirt road starts here, on our way up to explore Paseo de Cortez.

The road was decent enough for small cars, in our experience a pretty good dirt road.

Took us an hour to get to la venta villa ecoturistico.

Another 8km to the pass Paseo de Cortez

Sprinter 2WD 7m long, no problem getting up. 95% off time on second speed. 2-3 patches about 20m little bit more bumpy but nothing special. Nice ride. I guess nobody came here to drive panamerican highway :P

DON’T DO THIS ROAD if you have a motorhome. We have a 4x4 motorhome and we had to return becasuse we almost overturned. Was the more stressful situation we lived in 4 years.

Dirt road to the top of the pass is very passable for motorbikes/mopeds, some soft sand in places but did fine on fully loaded adv moto

This should not even be considered a road! Driving this road was more of an OHV road than the main road to and from Puebla. We drove down this road from the visitor center at the top of the volcano to Puebla with a F350 truck and our truck camper attached. We managed to make it down but it was not fun or a good experience! There was many holes and rocks the whole road. We drove 5 MPH the whole way down. To do this road you need very good breaks and tires! Be very careful when driving this road but the awesome volcanos are definitely worth it! Safe travels

We drove this road down from the Paseo de Cortes towards Puebla with our big and heavy rig (9m long, 18t). 10 or 15km of a washed out dirt road, whish I think was the worst that we have been driven so far. We managed alright - and looking at the vehicles the locals drive up there , no complaints about the rough ride.

It is indeed possible with 2WD, but you need high clearance if you don’t want to damage our car. And be prepared for a super bumpy ride! If you have the choice it would be better to approach from the other side (Amecameca), from where the pass is paved until the national park. We found this pretty awful with our campervan!

This road goes all the way to the top, it is rough and bumpy but locals drive any car on it.
Big rigs don’t waste your time.
We have extended sprinter van and high roof. Stayed up top but it was a slow drive through this entire section.
Mostly single lane so passing or oncoming makes it more interesting.
Did entire Passover but enjoyed our camping so not complaining, just warning.
Can’t imagine trying this in rainy season..

Report Check-In

Road still in bad shape but doable with any car having a standard ground clearance. Locals drive it with any kind of cars.

Report Check-In

Road is in very bad shape from the rain. Washouts in a few places. We decided to turn around in our truck camper.

if you're not up for taking this dirt road, the eastern road all the way to the top of Paso De Cortez is perfect winding tarmac.

Report Check-In

Road is still bad, lots of ruts/holes that force you to go slow, and on the Puebla side a lot of rocks sticking out but they are stuck in the road at least. Lots of traffic kicks up ash dust. The Mexican 2wd cars tackle it without a problem

Well 'good' is not exactly a qualification I would use to describe this road. Let's leave that for those were you can drive at least 30km/h... But yes, any car can make it here, just take your time.
