long drive down a dirt road and the ATVs come out early on a Saturday. OK in a pinch

Report Check-In

It is heartbreaking to see the heavy amount of damage done to these beautiful rocks because of the ATV’s and careless souls. So much trash - glass beer bottles, cigarette butts, gloves, food wrappers - and incessant buzzing of OHV’s and dust everywhere on a Monday afternoon. I left after an hour ~ I would skip this place.

Ok. I wanted to get out of the woods.... so I sure did that! I'm at the North Reno ORV recreation area....BLM Land aka Moon Rocks. Pretty cool area. Tons of off road trails. Not too crowded. BLM manages much of the land around here....100s of square miles it looks like on the mapping I saw, but I decided to just stay here, instead of going crazy looking for something more remote.....I had quite enough off roading for the day...campendium reviews are wrong or misleading in many ways...so if you plan on visiting here...take note. Reviews said this place had excellent vzw and att coverage. Nope! I drove around here for a good 45 minutes, checking out many spots, this spot was the only spot with VZW...tried higher, lower spots..etc.... Max speed test clocked in at 8.2 mbps download 3 up....and it is spotty. Att is max 2 mbps and VERY spotty. 2nd.... unless you have a 4x4 or just feeling a little spunky....do not enter like I did from the NW from Rt. 395/red rocks road. Take 395 all the way around to the south to pick up Rt. 445 North. The route I took... Google will first try to take you into Moon Rocks via a dead end road (thanks google!....30 minutes wasted). Next route in is bird springs rd off N. Red Rock road.....unfortunately I took it. There was an official BLM sign etc...so I figured why not! However... I was wondering why a couple guys in a 4x4 pulling out looked very confused and started to snicker at me turning in. Sketchist access road I've ever took my rig down. Not even close. Must have rained recently cause it was a muddy mess in many spots, deep ruts, washouts, where dry...very soft sand etc... I didn't think I was going to make it a few times.....but I just kept my momentum going, tried to stay high, said a couple hail Mary's and prayed the road would not get any worse. Well I made it....I do have a ton of off road driving experience....but in a capable vehicle... but it came in handy for sure.. Just a few minor battle scars and my rig is absolutely filthy now. Campendium gave access 4 or 5 stars....so that must be when coming from the south. But in the end it was worth it and it was actually kind of fun....got my adrenaline pumped up for sure. Nice spot. Free for the usual 14 days. No services. Beautiful Views for miles. A few off road guys here, not many, but I can see this place being a zoo on weekends, but now it's very nice.
