Description

Abandoned road just after the tunnel (coming from Charuaz). After leaving the tunnel turn right after about 200m. Follow the road for 300m. Spot is almost flat & beautiful view of valley and Laguna.

This road does look a little intimidating due to the soft edge and some rocks that have fallen and narrowed the road slightly. We took our large expedition truck (Height 3.20m, Length 7.67m,Width 2.25m) and made it no problem with the help of one person spotting on the cliff side. We have added pictures of the one tricky area (grey truck). Perhaps just walk it first, and even if you decide not to camp here, the view of the lake and glacier is spectacular and cannot be seen from the highway, so it's definitely worth a stop.

Disregard my last comment, I had my GPS pointing me at this spot. I drove up a beautiful spot that I added on iO just near here.

Drivable, beautiful view on a lake/valley/glaciar. 4wd recommended or 2wd skilled ✌️

if you want to try and take that road to get to the top: impossible by car, possible on foot or with bicycle (if you don't mind pushing and carrying it in some places)

i 'cycled' it today, very tough - biggest obstacles were big rocks, landslides on the road and a part of the road missing. so i had to push quite often and also carry the bike in some parts, also on the western side there are a few lanslides (big rocks) on the road, see fotos

we tried with our Short schoolie but the rain cut the road ...and leave some big rocks ...we didn't want to risk it at this altitude so we decided to park at the beginning of the road. And walk ...just beautiful!

Amazing spot looking at Laguna Cancaracá. Going from Carac to Chacas, pass the tunnel and turn right immediately after the sign to Chacas. You can stay there or, like us be adventurous, make an immediate left and stay in front of the lake and off the view of the road. Because of the altitude, it was tough to sleep b/c of the lack of oxygen so keep that in mind. Otherwise, you'll have a great experience surrounded by high peaks, wild rabbits and hummingbirds. It snowed throughout the night so it was tough to get out of our spot because of the ice and mud but we did!

Fantastic place with amazing views. Place for reasonable size rig. Free, quit, save and beautiful

The spot is great. We wanted to sleep there but the weather change to much at this high and we were not sure to be able to leave in the morning because of all the rain and "granizo". No facility, free and nice views.

A great place to stop the night although you are at 4,700m. If you carry on up a little further from this point there is a pull in over looking Laguna Cancaraca away from the sight of the road and tunnel. We loved it. R pic taken from a little higher up the road which becomes a little impassable

It's only a comment, we didn't sleep here.
Up at the pass are actually 3 or 4 abandoned roads. All accessible with any kind of rig, it only differs how far one get in.
Beside of that there are many pull outs on either side of the pass, most of them nicely flat. Choose the elevation you want.

Very pretty, with views of hanging glaciers and aquamarine lake. Right on the roadside, and worth a stop even if you don't sleep here. Only stay if acclimatized already. Very minimal road noise overnight, and we were treated to the sounds of ice carving off the mountains around us. The old abandoned road across the pass will prove very tempting for those who love a bit of adventure!
