Description

From El Estor to this point very bad unpaved road. Update: the road was then paved only for 4km. Paved is only between Panzos and St. Catalina and last 15km, the rest is in very bad condition. With our 2wd it took us 6 hours from Agua Caliente to the main road in St. Julian. The road was 5x blocked with a tree, we had to pay 1 or 2 quetzal to the people to let you go through as a contribution that they are trying to repair it.

Road is bad for 40 km, some kms very bad. Rest is very good. Slow but nice ride, also on the good sections of the road. Road is going up and down, through villages and forest. It is climbing up to 1400 meter. No road blocks or ropes today. Nice people.

Terrible condition of the road, dirt road with many potholes, you can't go more than 10 km, and if it rains you would need a 4x4

Drove through from El Estor to Semuc Champey on Suzuki Vstrom 650. No problems at all. I came in dry season, but the road is good condition imo with hard gravel and rocks, no huge drops, and no loose dirt. Fun little drive!

We were shadowing a truck and a taxi > nobody else gonna stop you!
Worth for waiting

Bad road, there is 2 part of unpaved road second part is longer, slow drive and take times. 5hours road between rio dulce and Coban.
We deflate a bit front wheels to drive more faster.

And we got 3 Times blocked road blocked by locals for some quetzal, they are putting dirt on pothole.
We gave First 10qtz, 2nd 4.5qtz and last 0 saying we dont have.
They are not agressive, relax.

Rope devils. Guys trying to charge 100Q to pass. Gave him 15Q. His mates were super grateful, him not. We’re getting to the point where we keep the windows up and confidently race towards the rope. Often they just drop it. Sadly sometimes not. Don’t open windows to fully to speak to them. You’ve no protection against machetes threats then.

Update: Still unpaved from El Estor to the intersection of the AV-29 and a bit further. Lot of Potholes and quiet bumpy, but even after a recent rain it was good to pass in our RWD Sprinter today.
The rest of the way the road is paved, but a lot of landslides that have been partly cleared. And no more suspension bridge. There is a new bridge wide enough for 2 way traffic. Took us from El Estor to Coban a good 4h

I would say bad road... we managed to keep a steady 60kph + along this road. But... there are A LOT of trucks! When you get to the suspension bridge, try and get to the front of the queue, only one truck can be on the bridge at a time and it’s one way traffic... the truck line up was probably about 75 to 100 trucks... so if you queue with them, at a rate of about a truck every 45” you’ll be there for a while!!!
It took us about 1 hour 1/2 from Rio Dulce to the turn off to Santa María Cahabón

All the way in the mountains was ok, not as bad as i imagined. In these lands there is a lot of mining (nickle) since many years ago. A canadian company used to work there, now its an international fund that its contaminating and killing the communities.

Before reaching the flat land you have to colaborate for keep on going

The worst of the road is when you reach the flat land. Really bumpy.
We passed other 3 colaborations that stoped us with a rope.

Updating the pin to be a warning. This could be easily missed by other travellers

We had no problems here. Dirt road but ok for us in G-wagon camper

Still very bad road. It took us in old Volkswagen 2wd around 8 hours from El Ester to Coban.

Report Check-In

They're working on the road. A lot of roadworkers and heavy trucks. Most of the road is paved if you're coming from Semuc Champey and ho to Finca Paraiso. They're working on the other side of the road. Watch out for all the dust!!! At some places there is so much dust from the trucks that you almost don't see anything!!!

Report Check-In

We can confirm the road is still bad.
