Description

No amenities, but an absolutely beautiful place to spend the night for free. There's a small river crossing to get to the more secluded side of the canyon, but it was barely ankle deep when we crossed. Take the southern bypass around Ayaviri and take a right when you see the sign to Tinajani Canyon. It's very cold, at around 13,000 feet. So bring some warm clothes.

Trying to clarify this spot. When arriving from the north, you can take a right after the bridge to a big open clearing next to the river. It is possible to then drive though the river to the other side, but it appears things are not quite the same as described before. To the right after the river someone is now living and has blocked the access road. She was not interested in us staying near her and her sheep. If you continued straight you go around the formations and there are additional small mud huts so we didn't stay there either and turned around. I feel it would be possible to camp before the river and it's a big flat area. This appears to be public land. We did not stay here as we got a bad vibe from that woman and did not want to cause any issues. See spot 'big red cliff'.

This was a frustrating experience. Yes, the formations are nice, but the rest was just annoying. We didn't find the place in the picture. So we stopped at the place of this pin before the bridge and started to discuss what to do. There are houses in every corner so not that easy to find a secluded place to camp and we've gotten a weird unfriendly vibe from the locals. While we discussed this woman came to collect the fee - its now 10 soles per person. Ok fine. She said its including camping and directed us to that river crossing. We drove and a guy approached us, saying to follow him, he will lead us to the campspot. After having been turned away already by other very unfriendly locals we followed hin, hoping he would lead us to the secluded spot in the picture. He lead us in front of his house and said we should camp here. Not happy about it but too tired to argue we stayed. But suddenly this guy also wanted 10s per person. Because he and his wife were the only nice persons we met we gave him 10 for us both (said we would leave otherwise) but were not happy at all. We expected to wildcamp at a nice place for 5s and ended up camping in front of a house with no privacy for 30s. Happy to support locals but not if they are unfriendly and treat you like you're a cow to milk. We didn't go hiking, didn't want any other person to come for us for money as well.

Drove through the river and took a right all the up the mountain towards the big rock pillar. One of the best camp spots on my SA trip so far. Amazing walks and lots of birds. An old lady walked all the way up to collect 5 soles, no problem.
Extremely cold night - 6!

Gorgeous and quiet. Drove through the river with 2wd Promaster and made the first right. Cats were happy until we saw more eyes than our kitties...so we went all in. They were probably foxes.
Someone came at night to charge S/5 pppn.

We stayed overnight at this place, no issues, very quiet. Even in rainy season perfect place to park. We also did the hike to the viewpoint here and did like it even more than circuit n°1. To start the hike, don’t cross the bridge if the water level in the river is high, but follow the river at the same side as this parking lot. There is a possibility to walk over a narrow ridge at the side of the rock wall and reach the hiking trail. It’s really better passable than the river. At our return from the hike, a lady was waiting for us. She asked again 5 PEN pp. for hiking here. She explained that it’s a different property than the one further on the road. Local people (owners?) keep the region clean, so they want to be paid for it. She had tickets, so it looked more official. She also explained that there is a third place to hike, and also there they ask a fee to enter. We really understand that they want to charge a fee for entering this beautiful region, but it’s a pity that it’s not well organised and locals want to charge tourists like this. we have the impression lady only charges the fee during the weekends, the day before we didn’t see her. She also arrives after 10 AM, because she has to find a car to arrive here. We had a nice chat with this lady.

When wild camping on private land and very close to an established campground - consider how much a campesino in Peru earns. Support the locals. Go to established campgrounds!

WARNING! I am a woman traveling alone with a dog. Arrived here after dark. Turned right before the bridge and drove next to the river about 200 meters until the cliff. 10 minutes later a man aproached shouting at me, holding a rope while three angry dogs walked behind him. It didn't look like he was in the mood to talk. I had to lock my self in the van and drive away as he banged on my window and showted at me to leave. In 8 months of traveling this is by far the most dangerous situation I felt I was in. Ended up sleeping in the organized camping close by.

If your on motorbike with tent, I just drove up the little hill and put the tent under the cliff overhang. Nice and sheltered from the elements. Beautiful place...

The dogg uses our camper as a cover to launch an attack for passing motorcyclists. Feel a bit sorry for the riders. To us, his very friendly. Must have been given food by other overlanders who have parked here. This spot has a good view for surrounding mountains.

Lugar super tranquilo, passa algumas motos durante a noite. Dormimos acompanhados de um casal de viajantes. Lugar lindo e tranquilo para passar alguns dias.

Awesome camping spot. The view in all directions is spectacular. Friendly dog greeted us when we arrived and stayed with us the whole time. Quite a few motos passed in the evening and morning but no one bothered us.

Very nice wild camping spot, in our opinion better here than to pay at the formal campground 500m later on the road. You can camp either before or after the bridge.
The farmer came to salute us but didn't ask for any money. His dog stayed with us all night and was very friendly to us but barked like crazy to anything or anyone approaching our van.
From the main road you have to take a dirt road for 10kms to reach the canyon, all kind of vehicle can drive the dirt road, it's wide and flat.

Report Check-In

Great spot to stay the night with level ground and space for multiple rigs. Many motos drove by throughout the night, but no one bothered us. In the morning the farmer across the way asked us for money, we showed him the bag of rubbish we had picked up around the river and he left us alone.
