Something not right?

Description

Due to the amount of sargasses (seaweed), this place can be a pretty smelly spot where to spend a few days. The smell can be unbearable. But the sargasso is ONLY from April to November. Which ruins the beach then.
Mahahual is otherwise a lovely little village.

Latest Check-Ins

We stayed here four days, right by the sea and no one bothered us. The village of Mahahual is mostly active during the day when cruise ships are docked at the port, not that much at night. At the end of the most days, some locals were selling fish they just caught.

Oh and this spot is right by the sea so expect it to be windy and salty.

Report Check-In

Report Check-In

We stayed three nights here with two other motorhomes. Quiet place by the sea. we took advantage and walked through the center of the village.

great spot but no trees or shade , the Wind saver Is from the High temperature. very quite during the night .

Report Check-In

We stood there 3 nights without any problems. Simply a parking lot, but quite at night, even on weekend. 200m right down the beach is a public area with big Palapa, palm trees and swings. After swimming we used the outdoor showers from the next hotels. Village only crowded when the big cruises stop here. Prices very touristic.

Report Check-In

Everything as described. Free and nice place by the sea. The smell of the seaweed wasn’t that bad at this place, but it was in the little town nearby.
Locals came to hang out around this place and all of them left their trash behind. So I think to enjoy this place bring bags with you and collect the trash around your car.
But hey, it’s free!

Report Check-In

Spend 3 nights here. It’s totally free.
When we were there, there was so much wind but the place was still nice.
Some locals come for the sunset until 11pm to hangout.

Nice spot, quiet after 10-11pm, other overlanders also slept here. Nice walk to restaurants on the beach front.
Tons of cruise ship tourists though.

Seaweed smell is a bit off putting when you come during Seaweed season, most restaurants in the beach clean it up which makes it nice to swim though.

We stayed 3 nights here, very nice spot! Can get quite busy at sunrise and sunset with locals coming to enjoy the view! But was not noisy! Fantastic snorkeling just at 20mt fron the beach! You can walk to the town passing from the malecon. A little bit of trash, but it's way better here than if you continue the road, there is really really full of trash!
Good Telcel 4g, spots are flat, police cames to do normal security checks! All locals very friendly.

we slept great, alone looking at the sea and we saw a beautiful sunrise

Report Check-In

Save place to sleep, but a lot of noise The night. The smell of the seaweed, is horrible. No facilities

Report Check-In

We stayed here for almost 2 weeks during the coronavirus. Because there were so few people here (cruises canceled, etc.) it was a fantastic place to keep to ourselves. I can imagine it gets pretty busy otherwise, cause it's a free place that permits parking. No one bothered us and the military station is right across from the lighthouse. Lovely spot, if a bit trashy. Super windy to keep us quite cool and comfy. Sargassum did pile up, but not that bad or smelly. I found water spigots on the malecon to fill up our solar shower.

Report Check-In

Not bad for 1 night, it is right on the beach.
Sunrise is beautiful and it was awesome watching the huge cruise ships come in.
Continue to drive up the road you will find small pull offs which are more secluded and will fit 1 van nicely.
It was fairly windy and our van was covered in salt mist but there is a little car wash on the way out of town if you need it.

Report Check-In

Quite a lot of traffic there with people coming, parking for a while, staying in their car and them leaving.
Feels like it's the place where people hookup in their cars...
Apart from that, sunrise was really nice. Breezy all day which is nice, but the whole RV needs a shower to clean the salt away.

Easy to reach and free.
Police patrol every hour or so.

Report Check-In

We stayed here for two nights without any problems. no sargasse, the sea is beautiful, very close to many bars, hotels and nice shops. People near the lighthouse really nice. Not far away is a naval barracks. safe and free places.

Report Check-In

very windy spot near the light house.
the smell of the sargasses didnt allow us to stay more than one night
.Busy during the day but quiet at night.
We tried to find other places along the road to the north, but every places to camp were closed and the smell of sargasses horrible.

Report Check-In

Stayed 3 nights nice spot for free. A lot of garbage dumped by the locals which is super sad in my opinion. I took every day 10 min to clean it a bit it doesn’t hurt. Everyone should do the same instead of complaining about the garbage...

Parc with playground, street food (try the hotdogs for 20 pesos, really yummy), a police house, we stayed here two weeks and had peaceful nights, even Monday to Friday at 7am there are Zumba classes that youcan attend for 20 pesos donation. Nice place.

Report Check-In

We stayed for a month stopping in this place, comfortable and safe. There is no service and inside everything is clean.

Report Check-In

Felt safe and it nice that it was free. Our experience was a bit different than others though, possibly because the lot was crowded and we had to park closer to the entrance/lighthouse. Lots of cars came in until very late at night with people hanging out and drinking which was quite noisy. Lots of broken glass on the ground. Probably better if you can fully shut yourself in your rig and do all you need in there. I suggest heading south of Mahahual if you are looking for peace and quiet.

Report Check-In

Nice and safe place to stay.
Village is nearby.

Report Check-In

Saludos!

Report Check-In

Great place. Very quiet but full of mosquitoes. There is a big swamp nearby. Just across the Marine Police quarters. The sea breeze is awesome! FREE ;-)

Report Check-In

Great big parking lot next to the lighthouse. 5 meters from the Caribbean Sea with a very nice breeze. Water is crystal clear. The malecón starts right there and the village is super relaxed. Great spot for more than one night. Restaurants, WiFi all close by.
