Description

Drive on a grave/dirt road for 3kms off of hwy55. When you get to the green gate it is/was unlocked. From there it's 300 mts to a stunning high altitude lake, a waterfall as a backdrop, and wild trout fishing! (Caught small to medium sized Rainbows). Plenty of open flat spaces to camp/boondock. There is another lake above the waterfall called Tambor. Very quiet, no one around. Seems like the place was a failed tourism venture given the two empty houses.

Latest Check-Ins

We were here on a Sunday. The gate was open, and a small local tour operater had taken a few people up. There was a woman posted up by the little hut, asked us for 1000cop p/p and they have signposted a nice flat area for camping. If you want to check before trying the dirt road, ask at the little restaurant/cafe in the white building at the bend in the main road. The very nice woman working at the cafe was the one who told us about this spot, and she'll know if it's open or not.

While you still can’t access this, there is a nice pullout 1.7km before here where you could stop for free with great view of the valley. We didn’t camp, just hiked over from Paramo del Almorzando spot next door.

Report Check-In

The gate was closed and locked when we arrived, with a private property sign. We found the woman with the keys but she didn’t want to open it for us. She also said no campfires

Fantastic place! It is bloody cold!! You are a long ways up.
Met a bunch of locals coming and going from this place. If you meet one, ask them to tell you the legend of the "Castle made of gold".
Saw lots of fish jumping, never caught one personally.
Tried to hike to the lake above the falls. One hour in and we turned back (likely half way).
Buy some wood in one of the villages, you'll want it.

Place with several possibilities to camp. the view over the laguna to the waterfalls is awesome. Bring some wood and you can make up a fire. It’s pretty cool on this altitude.

This place is perfect for Overlanders, the view is awsome. Really quiet. You can go swimming or fishing in the Laguna.
