[Comment: Hi. I'm the owner of Macondo camp. Thanks for putting us on your website. I'd like to tell you that Overland Trucks also are welcome in Macondo Camp. We had a few of them and they were very happy. We had some problems about gate dimensions only with one very big truck but we resolved the situation because my staff provide transport for all things inside and the truck was parked outside with a Macondo's watchman all night. Thanks and best regards from Luca. email [email protected] ]
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Great location!!! All the details below are still correct but as we were the only campers there it all felt very private. But great location and the food in the restaurant is just amazing. Highly highly recommend!
Report Check-InAs bad weather was coming in, I was lucky to stay in one room. Price is 60k MWK (mosquito netting, clean, hot shower) or 45k MWK for a tent with shared bathroom.
If needed, you can pay by credit card (of course, to a poor rate, but it is good to know you can).
Food and service as described. Good wifi, but didn't reach my room as the furthest away.
worth visiting just for the restaurant! delicious Italian food. lovely owners. great music. laundry facility. the overlander section is nice but sites are close together. camping MWK15,000 pppn (~$7.50 at tout rates).
Report Check-InNice small campsite with 5 places, all on grass, each with own covered Boma, at the edge of Mzuzu. Relaxing atmosphere, very nice and friendly owner and staff. Electricity, fast WiFi, hot showers, good ablutions, good facilities for campers. We camped here for one night on our trip to Nyika, and enjoyed the site. We had dinner with self made ravioli- excellent! Can recommend!
Report Check-InVery nice place. Cosy and food is great. I saw the rooms, they are very nice with private bathroom.
I choose to camp, because was nice too, table, shade, electricity and lamp. Very good hot shower
Small pretty campsite on the edge of town. 5 tent pitches of which 2 are good for an RTT. Reasonable ablutions with hot water. Great Italian restaurant on site. Not very suitable for big rigs due to tight entrance but we got out trailer tent in OK.
Report Check-InTiny campsite with only room for 4 cars (and with no privacy). Quit some noise from the bar in the evening and a lot of cockcrows before sunrise. OK for a stopover. Cappuccino is definitely not Italian (and not really good), espresso is ok, breakfast options are limited but nice, pasta is not really good (ravioli was undercooked), salads are nice, cheesecake was good. But in general, the food is way overpriced for the quality and amount you get: $5 for small cheesecake, $8 for 10 ravioli.
Report Check-InPlace is as described. I tented, and the sites are great, covered table area with light and power. Toilet and shower are a ways away. Wonderful staff. My meal was very good but also expensive (American pricing, not Malawian) and not a big enough portion especially considering the price. I did enjoy a cappacino (again $$) and sitting around the evening fire. The staff really are wonderful and friendly. The property is lush and green.
Report Check-Inexactly as described by others.
lovely spot and great pizza (my first for 2 months)
Good campsite with excellent restaurant. Fast WiFi and cozy atmosphere.
Report Check-InGood campsite, wonderful pasta ( home made) at the restaurant.
We went around the city with Hassan a local guide, it was a great time, we tried a lot of food, visited the market, went cycling, Hassan is very nice.
to be added to our previous comment: we took a city walking tour with Hassan (the lodge has his contact), which was very interesting, exiting and a lot of fun!
Report Check-Inwe loved to stay at this beautiful place. Also the food was very delicious.
Highly recommended!
Nice campsite with friendly owner and staff. They offered that we can stay in chalets for the same price as it was cold and rainy. Food is great
Report Check-InNice campsite with friendly owner and staff. They offered that we can stay in chalets for the same price as it was cold and rainy. Food is great
Report Check-InAn absolute gem. An oasis in town. Close enough to explore the market etc but tranquil. Run by lovely Italian couple. Fantastic Italian restaurant. Would highly recommend!
Report Check-InVery lovely and helpful staff and owners! They even offered us to stay in a room instead of the campsite for the same price (due to low/rainy season).
Clean ablutions with hot water.
The food from the restaurant is delicious.
Excellent stay, Great food and atmosphere. Crew were very friendly and polite. Camping 15000 pp
Report Check-InAwesome and tranquil, little place with a superb restaurant serving delicious Italian food. We had fantastic pizzas, orange cheesecake and home-made limoncello. Campsite is small, but functional, with power. Ablutions were clean and nice. Friendly staff. Peaceful night, even thiugh it was Friday. Would definitely come again. 15000 mkw/pppn. Bought a nice canvas bag, too, made by local women (all profits go straight to them). Really good atmosphere in this place in general!
Report Check-InWonderful stay with Luca & Cecilia 🙏 we decided to stay here for a night because we heard so much about the food and needed a treat. On arrival we noticed a leak and Luca went over and beyond to help us get someone to weld our aluminium radiator. Without his help we wouldn’t have been able to fix it. We enjoyed his place immensely whilst fixing the bike. It’s just so beautiful here … the garden … the restaurant … everything is so nicely done! And finally a hot shower!! We could do our laundry and the food, like everyone told us, was fantastic! We enjoyed home made limoncello and pasta. The coffee in the morning was great too! Lovely place to camp and very nice rooms also. We had the pleasure to enjoy both! HIGHLY RECOMMEND to stop here.
Report Check-InLuca and Cecilia have a nice place in Mzuzu: gardens, a small but functional campground, different types of rooms and a very nice Italian bar/restaurant.
I was looking for the cheapest room with a fan - shared bathroom (too hot for me to camp), and Luca gave me an ensuite for the same price. I didn't try the pasta, but the lemon cheese cake was really good. Secured place. Grazie Lucas and Cecilia!
Really nice campsite. Owners and staff are really friendly and we felt very welcome here. If you need a bit of a treat, the Italian food is very good and they even do half size pizzas which is half price of large.
Report Check-InNice campsite for 10.000 per person per night. Including good Italian restaurant, place to do laundry and a hot shower.
Report Check-InWe loved this place - perfect end to a hilly day of cycling from the lake. The owners are wonderful, they go out their way to make sure cyclists are comfortable. Food is great too! They have filtered water by the washing area.
Report Check-InJust out of town, this is a friendly and pleasant place to stay. You can camp in the well-maintained garden. There are also rooms. The Italian restaurant is authentic. Unfortunately dogs bark at night.
Report Check-InNice, relaxed camp basic ablution with hot showers. You can camp next to a shelter with electricity. We had a good pizza in the restaurant
Report Check-InStill a pleasant place when you are in Mzuzu. Great restaurant. Camping is now 8000 MK per person.
Report Check-InThe super friendly and very nice owners Luca & Cecilla (from Italy) make this place special. Also highly recommend the delicious Italian food and ice cold beer... A must when staying in Mzuzu... everything else has already been said.
Report Check-InAll as described by the previous ones.
Big rigs need to fight at the entrance gate, it is really narrow 3 meters wide. 6$ pppn. You have to pay for WiFi.
Fantastic place to stay. we have a rooftop tent on a hillux, pitch was big enough with nice covered seating and table area with electricity and lighting so we didn't need to pit up our awning. Ablutions clean and electric hot water showers. Grassy site. We enjoyed a delicious meal and bottle of wine in the Italian restaurant, the enormous direct was lit which kept us really warm and we sat there till quite late. The manager and his team of staff were so lovely and friendly and helpful. I'd you want to go out out in Mzuzu it is also perfect for that but we were very happy to relax at the site. They also have en suite rooms and set up tents. Camping was a very reasonable 6000 kwa pppn. Definitely recommend as a stop on your travels.
Report Check-InGreat place to camp in Mzuzu and excellent value for money (still Kw4000 pp for camping and free for kids). Showers are hot as long as you make sure the staff have turned the electricity to the showers on.
Report Check-InNice campsite with electricity, restaurant is good. Also visited by some locals.
Report Check-InAs described :)! Very green and very calm. Food is good, staff is friendly. Showers weren’t hot…
Report Check-InStayed here for one night. This place has a nice vibe! Three smaller campsites for 4x4 not completely leveled but we used a piece of wood and where fine. Small shaded with benches at every campsite. Restaurant is lovely! Furthermore we spotted 3 Chameleons in the beautiful Garden. Friendly staff. Ablutions are okay. Overall we liked our stay and would recommend it for everyone that is driving through Mzuzu. Quiet neighborhood. Price for camping was very fair. We like it!
Report Check-InThere are 4 or 5 grassy spots to camp. All have electricity and a small roofed place to sit.
This is a better and cheaper place then uMunthu. But it's further from the city center so you cannot walk into town.
Great pizzas.
We paid 4000 pppn. Children free.
Report Check-InSpent 4 nights over the course or 3 weeks. Great quiet place on the hill, but close enough to the city center. Food at the restaurant is nice and not overly expensive (pizza's are very good). There was no wifi when we were there but Airtel reception is good. Good vibe for a campsite in urban territory.
Report Check-Innice place out of town for a stop off in Mzuzu. restaurant offers decent Italian food and campsite had good ablutions and electricity ports.
Report Check-Invery nice campsite, good ablutions and lovely pizza. Was a bit noisy from animals but we liked the stay. I also liked it's a bit out of town.
laundry K2500
Report Check-InGood stop over for one night. Very nice restaurant but sadly you get noise from it on campsite. Food delicious, we also bought home made coffee liquor. Good value for money campsite. Good ablutions. Owners super friendly, full of great suggestions for further trip.
Report Check-InNothing really to add as everyone else has covered things. One of the best camps we’ve stayed at, the sheltered picnic tables in the camping area are amazing for the rainy days. Great restaurant, nice staff and the owners are lovely
Report Check-InVery comfortable place to hang out, nice garden, great pizza. Places to park for overlanding vehicles on grass next to picnic tables. Gate is a tight fit but a large truck made it inside during our visit so it is definitely doable.
Unfortunately WiFi was disappointing, paid 4000MK for 24hrs but WiFi did not work.
For us this was our home away from home. We had car trouble (and the best mechanic of Mzuzu is right down the road) and stayed at Macondo during the repairs. Luca, Cecilia and the rest of the staff are the best. Everything is clean, you can do laundry and the restaurant is the best! Highly recommended!
Report Check-InLovely campsite near centre of town but no noise. Security good. Warm welcome by owner. Excellent genuine Italian restaurant. Rooms also good value.
Report Check-InThis was by far fun. The italian owners both are great hosts and have plenty to share. Overlanders themselves that know how we want to be welcomed and treated. The coffee the chats all was good. I regret not staying for another night.
Report Check-InThe campsite is nice with a little shelter, power point and table. They made two additional spots. Place looks nice in general. Ablutions are ok (warmish shower), but not enough when busy. It was busy when we visited (Saturday) and the focus was clearly on the visiting restaurant guests / expat friends. They were loud and there was music until late. Only one guy bothered to sort of welcome us by saying the price for camping (4000pp) and that we couldn’t park where we parked. Then he walked away. Not very friendly. Didn’t meet the owners.
Report Check-InSmall campsite but great atmosphere. 3 grassy pitches and space for maybe a couple more on gravel. Run by a friendly and interesting Italian couple. Only 1 shower and 2 toilets but it want busy and worked fine for us. Coffee was the strongest I've ever had!
We had power at our pitch and a sheltered area. Having been to all the accommodation in Mzuzu this is our favourite, only thing is its not walking distance to town.
We managed to fit our 3.7m tall big rig here.
Report Check-InLuca and Cecilia are running this gem but they also travelled as overlanders in Africa themselves. They have great stories to share.
Reasonable prices but most importantly great Italian restaurant.
Daily homemade pasta it’s not easy to find around here. Defo go for pasta dishes.
They also make homemade limoncello, sambuca, orancino and coffee liquor. You gotta taste them!
Report Check-InNice little campsite and cozy set up, great restaurant with amazing italian food although not cheap well worth it! Kw4000 pppn camping. I loved the European atmosphere, decorations and limoncello, Luca and his wife are super friendly!
Report Check-InAbsolutely gorgeous! Welcoming, family friendly, grassy patches, best Italian restaurant north of Lilongwe! Only few minutes drive to centre and mall, yet quite and peaceful. Absolutely recommendable.
Report Check-InA very nice place with great Italian owners and helpful staff. Campsite is in a nice setting on lawn. Amazing italian food with homemade pasta and traditional pizza. You definitely should try the ravioli con salvia and butter. And try the homemade liquer. If you are interessted the owners Luca and Cecilia advice you with nice spots and contacts for travelling in the north of Malawi. We enjoyed our time here.
Report Check-InNice campsite to stay for 1 or 2 days. There are three spots for overland cars with a picknick table. They have a hot shower when the electricity is on. Nice restaurant. It’s 4000 mk per person.
Report Check-InMzuzu is your last stop to do groceries before you had further north. With a shoprite and big local market it is perfect.
Macondo campsite is a small campsite that has little space for overlanders as it is just a small pitch of grass, max 3 spots, but it will be cramped. If you only have a tent you can pitch it all over the place with enough room. They also have a dorm or or you can sleep in their tents for 20.000 a night.
Abolution is outdated and with 2 toilets and 1 shower for everybody (campsite, dorm and tents) this is too little.
They serve breakfast, lunch and diner for reasonable prices. Portions are good and the taste is even better, delicious!
The dessert on the other hand wasn’t tasty at all in our opinion.
The bar and dining area is very nice decorated and gives you that backpackers vibe.
Internet is available, but slow during our stay. You pay 500 for an hour.
Report Check-InSuberb campsite! The owners are avid overlanders, and they have quite the stories and footage of their many trips throughout Africa. They have the best coffee in Malawi, and delicious Italian food that makes you want to stay for longer or go to Italy straight away.
Awesome atmosphere, great camping and friendly staff!
Report Check-InBest place to camp in Mzuzu. Italian owned and run by Luca and his wife. Excellent Italian restaurant, very small but nice shower and ablution block, electricity at overlanders vehicle spot (space for just 2 maybe 3 vehicles). Slow Wifi. Also chalets.
Report Check-InGreat oasis in all the chaos. Also some of the best food made from fresh ingredients. Owners are also a wealth of information as they have traveled extensively overland throughout Africa.
Report Check-InNice campsite, Superb Italian restaurant, great people, perfect stopover. Basic camping facilities (power point, toilet, hot shower, laundry (washing machine) available).
