Description

parking lot of lanchas to island. 110 pp one way for boats.

(edit as of 17-7-2018: we only paid 10 pesos per person one way and not I. a group boat - two of us taken over ourselves was 20pesos - didn't want to change above thought cause it sounds like there are different seasons that may affect the costs.)

There was no one else here when I arrived and paid $150 pesos each way for the boat. I wish I had waited for others to split the fee. I put up my tent and camped right near the water, was quiet and peaceful at night. There was a guard who manages the bathrooms who is really kind. No fee for the camping.

Stayed for one night after kayaking to the island. Level parking lot and road is easily accessible for 2wd. Bugs at dusk (no see-ums). There isn't a formal fee, but we tipped the guard at the restrooms.

Sleep 2 nights in the parking of the embarcadero without problem. There is a gardian on duty and should have gave him a tip but realized to late. 150 pesos to take a boat to the Island x 2. If you are more people you can share the fee. We paid an extra 60 pesos to do a tour around the Island when arriving. The Restaurant Alberca was recommended to us by a lady and it was good. Be sure to try the shrimps.

Parked here for the morning. Busy with locals and felt safe, you could probably sleep here. Baños 5 pesos, dirty. We have kayaks so can't comment on boats, but there were plenty coming and going to Mexcatitlan. Town is worth checking out for half a day, shrimp are delicious.

We drove as far as you could to get to a parking lot that the boats go for Mexicaltitan. We got there a bit late (after 4PM) and we were only charged 10 pesos each to get to the island. I misunderstood and gave him 40pesos for the two of us and the man waited for is while we walked around the island and had dinner at one of the restaurants. We got back to where the boat was and the man was still waiting for is even though it was past 5. When he returned us to the parking side I have him 20pesos (so a total of 60pesos or 30 per person - although it should have only been 40$ - I was happy to have given a bit extra for the off hour rides.) There was a family that ran the parking lot and I was not sure how this worked as she had cleared a place for us to park. I believe she said we could sleep there but as my Spanish is minimal I'm not quite sure. I gave her 10 pesos for the parking and safety of our car - again I'm not sure this was required but there were small children and the family seemed to be minding all of the islands cars. The last part of the drive has many potholes and the roads are smaller - you can seen so many birds on your way. We did not go during Rai y season so you could walk all of the island - this could be the reason for price differences - during the rainy season the islands streets become filled with water and it is necessary to boat. The island was very cool - people out and about - friendly & chatting - would be a great place to be part of a community it seemed!

Mexcaltitan is a great afternoon trip if you are in the area.
The island is where it is believed the Aztecs came from before founding Tenochtitlan.
Today it is a small shrimping village of just a few blocks, great to walk around, explore and take pictures. There is a museum, a church and 2 or 3 restaurants - shrimp being the island's main delicacy.
Not sure if you can sleep on this spot - it is pretty far away from it all but seemed safe during the day.
This is the last spot before leaving for the island - you take the lanchas (boats) from here. Avoid getting ripped off and use the 15 pesos communal ones that leave at 1pm and get back from the island at 4pm.
