Description

A beautiful place! Even though there is no electricity or water on the sites, the view from the site is AMAZING, directly to the sea! The road that gets to the campground is 48 km paved road and the last 17 km is gravel road.
The host was very nice, her English is very good, she’s a marine biologist so she has a lot of knowledge.
100 pesos per person, you can also pay in PayPal.
The toilets are pit toilets but very clean, the showers are bucket showers but also very clean and plenty of hot water.
Wi-Fi, surprisingly is pretty good but works better at the office.
In the morning there’s a whale watching tour, (60 USD per person).
We saw some whales, dolphins
and had SO much fun.
Highly recommended! we would definitely come again.

Awesome place to stay. We dry-camped in our Sprinter van for two nights. Paola was a terrific host, informative and friendly with excellent English skills. Even though it was early in the season, we had a great whale-watching trip with Daniel, who was knowledgeable about birds as well as whales. The grounds and buildings are tidy and well kept, and the wifi is good at the reception building. The pit toilets are super-clean and a great solution for desert camping. The solar bucket showers are a good water-saving solution: a large bucket catches water from the hot and cold taps and you use a smaller bucket to scoop and pour water over yourself. We would stay there again.

This place is 10/10! The road is paved for the first 45km. The last 20km or so are pretty rough. If you are worried about the condition about your vehicle I would not come down here. There are several side roads that run along side the main road and most of them are way better than the main road. They all rejoin together so you can’t get lost on them.

Antonio’s is still in the early season so there is no restaurant until February but camping is available with clean toilets and showers. We paid $100/person for camping per night.

Whale watching is $60USD or $1200 MP per person. Paulo was our guide with Luis as our driver. They both have 10+ years on the water and are incredible. We were worried about the ethics of what whale watching would be like here but they do an incredible job of responding to the whales behaviour to keep them comfortable. We had a curious calf but mom wasn’t yet ready to visit with us but we got to spend some incredible time with her and her calf. We watched a group courting without disturbing them. As the season goes on the whales get friendlier but for us this experience surpassed our wildest expectations.

We wanted to stay overnight at Antonio’s Campsite, we don’t need shower etc., still they wanted to charge us 400 Pesos per night.
We didn’t stay, went just a few hundert meters to the right of Antonio‘s Camp, stayed for free.
We did the Tour with Antonio’s and it was amazing, really recommended US$ 60 per Person.
It’s 65km form San Ignazio to the Lagoon, the last 17km are gravel- or sand, but if you are it take easy and slow, every kind of vehicle can do it.

We highly recommend this place! Stayed one night and did a whale tour the next morning. $5 per person to camp- clean toilets, hot showers heated with solar, and great view of the bay. It’s now $60 per person for the tour but well worth it in our opinion. Paula is such a welcoming host and speaks excellent English. Our tour guide, Daniel, was so great and the food was delicious. Always happy to support a Mexican-owned family business.

Beware of google maps! It will try to take you on some “shortcuts” that almost got us stuck. Just stay on the main road and follow the signs to Antonio’s Ecotours.

Sandy spots in grey whale tour camp. Access to toilets and solar showers. $10 US per person. Convenient place to spend the night before a tour. Very clean . Great views of the lagoon. Accessed by long sandy/dirt road. Sporadic cell coverage on Verizon, 2G only, wifi by restaurant.

Report Check-In

$10 per person per night for camping, unsure about cabin prices. Staff is fantastic, showers are hot, the wifi is really good. Whale watching was great and we had a fantastic time all around.

Report Check-In

As said very nice staff but they want now Mex 200 per Person! for the camsite. The whale watching tour is still US$ 55 and you can spent max 1 1/2 Std out with the whales - seems to be a Park rule. We did not stay and no boat tour as we had both in Laguna Ojo del Liebre (see entry in Guerrero Negro Hotel/Camping/Ecotours Malarrimo) with much better condition.

I can’t rave enough about this place. Came for one night, stayed for two. Didn’t plan to go whale watching - can’t believe I ever hesitated.

The road in is washboard gracel/sand for 17 km then very washboard for last 7 km but very well- signed. Their friendly hospitality was second to none. Campground well maintained 200P/night. The restaurant served excellent food at reasonable prices - we ate breakfasts and dinners. Free coffee, tea and wifi all day. Whale watching $55 US, friendly guide (we had Valentin), and the grey whales, delivered an incredible experience. Hot clean showers. Clean toilets.

Antonio's ecotour was exceptional. Paula and Fernando were very good hosts. Paula spoke good English. David our tour guide spoke good English and was very informative about the whales. We saw many whales including a momma and baby. The cost was $55 USD per person to see the whales. The cost to camp is $10 USD per person. The fish dinner was cooked well and cost $10. This includes a beer. Overall I would highly recommend them.

Simply too mucky to get there today. Tried several different paths. I did not see any tire tracks to there either and it rained over a week ago, but it was enormous. I must be way early in the season. I dry-camped on the shore about 2Km NorthEast. Beautiful solitude.

If you are doing the whale watching tours then go here clean and inviting owned and operated by local Mexicans proud and respectful plus free coffee all day, cha-ching!

Clean campground with cabanas, some dry campsites, eco-toilets, showers, restaurant, wifi, free tee and coffee directly at the Laguna San Ignacio. Last 17 km are unpaved, last 10 km are terrible washboard. The whale tour is $ 55 p.P. They put up to 12 people in a boat. At our visit there where ca 200 gray whales and 18 boats in the Laguna San Ignacio. The whales and dolphins did an absolutely great job, but the tour guide could do it much better. Ok, he carried us 10 km to the whales and the first hour was ok until one female with her calf came close to the boat. Then he just cruised around quite far away from the whales not trying to give the whales the chance to come to the boat. Also he did not really want to talk to us even in Spanish. This is ok at Bahia Magdalena at a much lower price but maybe we expected too much here because we were in a wildlife sanctuary with a "certified guide".

We had a wonderful stay here for one night and took a whale boat tour the next morning. We were there before the whale watching season really gets underway in mid to late February so it was quiet but the restaurant also wasn’t open (no worries for us but important to note). The facilities are clean and eco minded. Some of the best hot showers in Baja, and solar heated to boot.

The boat tour was fantastic and the guide was excellent, knowledgeable and truly conservators of the whales and their habitat.

Highly recommended!

Stayed three nights, northerly wind prevented us from going out on lagoon in search of whales. Went out on the third day, no whales yet, we are early, but some pods of dolphins swam with the boat and it was incredible. Super beautiful place, good food, friendly staff. Rustic. Wifi was spotty but it was nice to disconnect. Each cabaña looked over the lagoon, just steps away. We went for some long walks at low tide. $30 a night, meals extra.

Stayed 2.nights; 200Pesos/night, very clean dry toilets, WiFi pretty slow, the whale watching tour was awesome! 55$/Person but absolutely worth the money!!

Report Check-In

Still 55USD per person boat tour. Double if one person wants to go alone.
Camping is 5USD. You can pay in pesos also. Rate was 18pesos for a dollar.
My first boat tour to watch whales. We were just 5 in the boat. Saw two mummies and their babies which came close couple times. Great time.
The tour last 2h. 15min out and 15min in. 1h30 with the whales.
Tip to the captain appriciated.
Dry toilets. Hot shower. Slow wifi.
If you don't want to pay for the camping, see the free spot that we've found a little bite further.

As I suppose we were not the first overlanders hesitating between Laguna San Ignacio and Ojo the Liebre for a whale watching tour and that I went to both places I'll share my preference.
We really loved Antonio's place. Staff is friendly, accommodations are clean and there is also a cosy sofa area where you can comfortabily make a first clean into your movies and pics of the day drinking a free coffee or tea.
Although most of people recommend Ojos, we had a much better feeling there than at the impersonnal place of Ojos. We only did the whale tour in San Ignacio but after such an experience, we didn't need do to it again elsewhere!
If you do the 9a.m tour, you'll probabily be on your own on bord which is much better as you can enjoy both sides of the boat.
We paid 10 dollars for the night and 55 dollars for the tour.
In addition and to conclude, this area is the most respectful towards the whales of all places is Baja, so worth support them. So if you have to chose between those two, go for this spot, you won't be disappointed! Please don't do any tour in Bahia Magdalena as there is no reglementation there and guides frighten the whales!

Super nice staff at Antonio's Ecotours. Camping is 200 MXN (10 USD) and Whale-Tours are 1100 MXN (55 USD).
They also have great dinner for a fixed price (10 USD / 200 MXN) and there is WiFi at the restaurant.
