Description

This is the Flamenco Refugio run by a concessioner of CONAF. It is not allowed to camp wild in the boundaries of the national park.
The main area of the refugio consists of
- a dormitory,
- a bathroom,
- a kitchen with table/bench and
- a parking lot.
Overlanders are welcome. The area is in progress and will be extended. The owners care for the tidiness of the place, provide (non-drinking!) water, care for wastewater cleaning and transport all waste down to Copiapo. For some extra money you can get hot showers.
Now to the downsides:
- For camping the price per person and night is 15000 CLP
- The kitchen is very small and only has one gas cooker and no running water
- The bathroom is just one room for all without running water
- Hot showers cost extra
- The parking lot is not leveled
- To access the area you have to pass the CONAF checkpoint and pay the park entrance fee (if you don't own the annual CONAF pass)

Stayed here for one night, we were the only two people in a dorm with 6 beds. Price was 30000 CLP pP per night at first, after some talking we payed 20000 each instead.

Dorm is nice, you get a thick sleeping bag and pillow. Only some of the Mattresses are really saggy. There‘s an oven inside as well to heat up the room a bit before going to sleep. Own toilet with manual bucket flush + solar electricity to charge your stuff.

The guys running the place are really sweet and accommodating!!

Amazing place for hiking, very windy after midday. Nice view to the 3 X and Laguna Santa Rosa with flamingos. After we arrived the very friendly people in the hostel invited us for tee and fresh backed bread. We payed 10000 to stay with our car in front of the house. The have a full equipped kitchen and a bathroom. Hot shower is available for extra money. A bed in the hostel is 20000 per person. We did the day hike up to maricunga 4900 (5h up 2h down) the view was amazing. After the tour the guys from the hotel invited us for dinner. We loved it to stay there. The street is absolutely ok, you can drive 70 km/h - just the last 15 km are a bit slower, don’t need a 4WD.

Amazing place, worth the drive, 3 species of flamingo and many other water birds. we watched the foxes running out on to the frozen lake and hunting the bird life. We camped at the Refugio and had use of the kitchen and toilet. Alvero, the guy that takes care of the place treated us very well, cooking us dinner on the first night, and breakfast the next day, we returned the favour and cooked dinner the next night, was great to meet him and enjoy a beer and food together. The road was pretty rough in spots near the laguna but passable at this time of year.
