Description

ADMIN NOTE: Road reports are not supported by iOverlander as per our criteria.

The road from San Juan to the Boarder at Ollagüe is a two track road with little improvement until about 20km from Ollagüe. From San Juan the road goes out onto a salty dry lake bed road that is pretty smooth. There are areas that look like they could be wet during and boggy, but in mid June it was very dry and easily passed. Most of the route winds along the lake bed until about these coordinates where you get on to a road that is occasionally graded. NOTE, the all weather formed gravel road turns off main road 5 about 12km west of San Juan and runs along the western shore of the dry lake and joins with the lake-bed track at this point.
.
In Feb 2017, others indicated that there were bad washboards that forced them to go slowly, but when we passed there were some but not a big deal. In general, 2wd is just fine, but some areas may be tricky to navigate with a low clearance vehicle.
The route passes along the base of many volcanos and is very pretty, we would highly recommend it. There are very few people living in the area. Seems like a lot of LandCruiser tours go through here.

Latest Check-Ins

Drove this road today from the border. A lot of corrugation, areas of deep sand and sharp rocks, but if you drive slow and watch for all the hazards it is ok.

Report Check-In

Very scenery indeed. The salt flat was easy driving, all dry but back on the gravel road we had only washboards. Terrible. We used manly the side tracks.
