Description

Wonderful hike to the CANYON OF LAS GUACAMAYAS VERDES and observe the beautiful multicolored military parrots !!! It is an absolutely magical experience!
Observing these magnificent birds in their natural habitat is an enchantment you will not be ready to forget!
Our Guide, Senor Isidro Lopez Santiago has been at the top! He accompanied us quietly on the trail (accessible to beginners) while informing us about the flora and the surrounding fauna. It was very interesting! Moreover it is very nice and ensures that everyone goes well, follows the rhythm of walking etc ... When you arrive in the observation hut it is the most exciting moment of this adventure ... Patiently We wait that the parrots come to take refuge in the canyon to the fall of the night .. It is then that a beautiful ballet of couples rewards you ... They arrive intermittently and they install themselves in the trees in front of Go on the other slope of the canyon. You can observe them without being spotted thanks to this observation hut. A magical moment not to be missed! The hiking trail is 6km one way and 6km back. Your guide will take you to the beginning of the afternoon to arrive at the end of the day because it is at this time that the parrots are the most visible. You will go back to the beginning / middle of the evening, it is you who will choose with the guide. For all info, permissions, guide and a place to stay overnight, go to this GPS point. Introduce yourself, there is the possibility of renting Cabanas, sleeping in your vehicle (see the other pin on this subject). There is a small Comedor run by the charming Loulou, with possibility of eating there. Before coming you can contact Senor Isidro Lopez Santiago who is the chairman of the committee. Tel: 236 112 1946 Email: [email protected] Please note that it is imperative to come here to get permission to enter the Biosphere Reserve (entrance fee) as well as to book an excursion with a guide (MANDATORY ). We went directly to the place at 9 o'clock and Loulou contacted us for us, arrived 10 minutes later with all the info! Other activities to discover in the corner, cave paintings, Rio etc .... Wonderful meeting of this charming little committee, which makes every effort to preserve the surrounding nature while passionately sharing their knowledge and knowledge with the people of Passage .. Go there without further delay! They are waiting for you with impatience! Price of the tour with guide + entry in the reserve, 300 pesos for 2 people.

lieu très sympa pour bivouaquer; possibilité de poser une tente ; toilettes et douche (froide) accessibles;
Isidore, le propriétaire du lieu est d'une gentillesse incroyable et fait son possible pour vous mettre à l'aise et pour que vous ne manquiez de rien (possibilité de se restaurer);

Camping option at Mirandas Cabanas after hinking to the Guacamaya Verde Canyon to view the Ara militaris. You can use the bathroom of the cabanas with cold showers, traffic noise is low during the night. We paid 100 Pesos for 2 people including breakfast. The Parrots are in the Guacamaya Verde Canyon from August until December. From January to July they spread out in the mountains near Tecomavaca in small groups for breeding. So we only saw 3 birds at 200 m distance, but the trail is nice through really great stands of candelaber cacti (Pachycereus weberi) with nice views of the valley.

Very nice place, easy to reach by federal highway 2 hours from the city of Oaxaca, and 2 hours from Tehuacan Puebla. To get to the macaws, you walk for 1.40 minutes, down the hill, wear appropriate shoes, mosquito repellent, hat, water. WhatsApp, 2361003741 with keren miranda or call Isidro guide 2361121946. Very rich Mexican food. parking service

We found this place here on IOverlander and sent an email in advance to get an English speaking guide. Highly recommend the effort to hike in. We drove in my dad’s Land Rover up to the trail head and were very happy we did. It’s definitely a 4x4 drive. Long and steep climb in full sun would have been exhausting.
You can pay 400p for the bumpy ride up, it will be the best money you’ve spent! Snr Isidro was very nice & charged 200p p/adult 100p p/child. Our kids 6 & 8 hiked in no problem. It’s a 5hr round trip so take food, water, bug spray, binoculars and a light for the hike down. We camped at km 129, behind the gate for the night 100p p/vehicle. Showers are solar, cold in winter. Be sure to arrive ready for 2:30 start. We saw 5 families of the Green Military Macaws, approx 25. They are magnificent and special to see in the wild. A must for bird lovers!

The experience to see the Guacamayas verdes in their natural habitat was truly amazing. We can only recommend doing the hike up to the canyon even though it is very strenuous because of the heat (it was 39°C when we started in the afternoon).
We asked the owners of the cabañas for a guide and they organised Señor Isidro López to come with us the next day.
The hike is 6km / 500m elevation gain (one-way) starting from the cabañas. The birds arrived aprox. at 6 o'clock in the evening and flew around or sat in the trees for about an hour before the went to sleep in the canyon wall. Don't forget to take your headlights as you have to return in the dark. We were charged 250 pesos p.p.

As described, this is the location for viewing the Green Macaw. depending on season, the birds are either here (Sep-Feb) pairing up and mating or in Sabino Canyon (Mar-Aug) nesting and having babies. Always best to contact Sr.
Isidro and/or just come to the Comedor y Cabanas approx km129 to check in (gps coordinates of OP are accurate). We did the hike at Chillar. First 2km gained most of the altitude and the hike was miserable on a 30c+ day. note that you can hire a truck for 400 pesos or so to drive the first 2km to make the trip easy. If you have 4wd you can drive it yourself and there is a flat spot to park and camp at the end of the road. From there the hike is 2.7km uphill contour to the cabanas. After a short, steep ascent from the end of the road the uphill grade is much more moderate to the cabanas. From the cabanas another 1km uphill, then a steep scramble down to cross the watercourse and steep short uphill to the blind. Birds began arriving an hour or so before dark, in groups of pairs...over the next hour we saw maybe 60-80 or more individuals of the 160 population. "Magical" is apt descriptor. Cabanas before the blind are an option if you bring backpacks and sleeping gear, but we descended in the dark to Lulu's (bring flashlight). Lulu does a nice job....we paid an astounding $8 each for lunch, breakfast, dinner and post hike beers. 300pesos for our rig, 500 pesos for entrance and guide (should tip the guide, too). Rent Lulus nice cabanas or park your small rig in her yard. A must do experience when the Macaws are here. According to our guide, the Sabino canyon hike is shorter, but viewing location is farther away. Your option will depend entirely on the season and location of the birds. Would be five stars had we been told about option of driving up or hiring truck, so now you know!

We had a good time here. The people here are very friendly.
If you want to have an English speaking guide you should avoid the weekends or contact them ahead of time.
The hike gains about 500m in elevation and starts early afternoon. Unfortunately we only saw one pair.

We were charged 250 pp for Theo hike (guide) and 100 per night.
Hike and place is dog friendly.
Bring bug repellent, they are relentless and might carry Dengue.

Nice place to camp and the hike to the bird-watching place is absolutely worth it. 6-7 hour hike with elevation. But the price is not the same anymore. Camping is 200 per unit per day and the guide charges 200 per person.
