Description

For those, who think about going through Paraguay into Bolivia:
Parts ofhe Trans-Chaco-Route from Asunción to here are currently not in good condition. There are many good parts, too, but the damages are numerous and often severe. It slows things down quite a bit. Still, I would say, it's doable with all kinds of vehicles. From about here (this is not the exact location) to Villamontes in Bolivia, it's an excellent road, except a few 10 km patches here and there before the following left turn and there's 20 km quite good gravel road before Villamontes. Easy border process.

Road is 95% of the way easy and smooth from the border to Filadelfia (about 3:45 to 4 hours). Only a couple spots here and there that had pot holes but that was only 5% of the drive. Very flat and straight road, can get boring quickly but hey, no complaints from us.

The road is good now from the Border to Mariscal, smooth with asphalt ! easy but very rectiligne drive

It is down to two bad parts now. The middle one is almost done now and you can already drive parts of the smooth new asphalt.

About the 3 bad parts before Filadelfia, coming from Bolivia, they are currently working on the middle one, so there is hope for improvement. From Filadelfia direction Asuncion, the road is still quite bad until the toll gate (we estimate it was 100+ km), potholes here and there but definitely not so bad as the first part until Filadelfia. From the toll gate it’s much better. We came from Tarija, we could have driven over Argentina, about the same distance and probably better road, however more towns, maybe less wild... (don’t know). We saw an amazing amount of all kind of birds along this road and a few mammals. Stopping was difficult though because of the fast traffic and no chance to park somewhere.

From the border to La Patria is fantastic, new asphalt. From La Patria to Mariscal there are three distinct very bad sections each around 8-10km. We're talking very large pot holes everywhere with no good path through. Very dusty as well. Saw 2 bicyclists too. Parallel to the road maybe 100 m off is a dirt road that might be smoother.

Report Check-In

Driving this bit of the road (15km) is quite rough. Big and deep potholes. Average speed: 18kmph.
Good news: it's not busy, we Saw only 5 trucks in an hour.

Most of the mentioned road has been repaired and is in good condition. I'd say between Mariscal Estigarribia and the Bolivian border there are about 10 to 15 km of bad road. But it's real bad. Any kind of vehicle can do it but for those bad parts, prepare yourself for a 20kph ride. The rest is in real good shape.
