We think the "gunshots" were probably just the bombs in town for celebrating. As we saw this place it was very peaceful. We don't think it should be marked as "closed". You can drive nearly to the top and then hike up. Very beautiful forest. Since we were there a couple of months ago there was a forest fire. The Mexicans don't seem to care and let everything burn. it's sad.

Report Check-In

Great spot, lots of room. We were considering sleeping in the street but seeing the truck traffic in/out the distillery discouraged us. This was perfect, we were alone except a short cow visit in the morning.

Report Check-In

We were kick out with fire gunshots at 11pm.

No one got injured, finished in a hotel near main square.

Be aware!!!

Good place, was super quite on New Year’s Eve, not so much the day after, many Mexican families came here to spend the day off. If you follow the gravel road another 300m you come to a much quieter spot, for this part you need 4x4.
3 bars Lte with att.

Report Check-In

Decent and easy spot after a day in tequila. No 4x4 but high clearance needed. Popular spot with locals, safe and fairly clean...

Report Check-In

High clearance def recommended! The road is steep and though, a lot of big holes and no way to turn around once you've started. Besides that, great spot!

One night here, quiet and secluded. If you have low clearence exercise caution, we dammaged our side skirts a little getting up here. Plenty of fire wood and stone fire pits.

Report Check-In

Beautiful spot! Quiet, no one was there! 2wd accessible. Telcel signal.

Stayed here just one night after an awesome day in Tequila. It was our first mountain camp since Arizona! Nice to see some junipers and feel the crisp night air.

You can hear the 15D in the distance, but it's not bad. It was very quiet other than that.

We drove a little farther up the dirt road that turns off the cobblestones, past the first camp. There was a nice secluded flat spot and fire ring inside the trees we camped at. No trash here and a good spot for my hammok. :)

Report Check-In

Camped here overnight. Friendly locals around camping and hanging out. Several pull offs into the woods available off this road. Free and safe.

Report Check-In

As described by previous visitors. perfect spot but trashy.

Your satnav will probably not navigate you directly there. It is important to start the drive in town. Go up the hidago out of town and up the hill. The road is steep and party washed out. Where the gps spot is set you drive down a ramp to your right. There you will find a large flat area for camping. Some firerings, but no people. Very quiet. Cool after sundown.

We made it with a Eurovan. High clearance is advised. No big rigs.

It's a little ways out of town in a world heritage site. Lots of cows a few people. Pretty quiet but you still hear a little of the highway. The only bummer about it is that you are on the volcano and don't get to see the volcano. Obviously not a deal breaker. I think we camped under the tree the local Cows hang out under because we had a few come by and moo at us.

Report Check-In

Very beautiful surrounds and quiet as described. The drive up here is on an old cobblestone street, a bit bumpy but 2 wheel drive is fine. Don't be fooled by the map. To get here you have to go through the town of Tequilla, which we enjoyed, and back up to the mountain. There's no shortcut from the highway.

Report Check-In

Free and safe... About 15 min out of town. Head south from the town square on calle hidalgo. Cross the train tracks and continue over the 15d toll road. Quite and a nice view
