Description

Process starts at the last checkpoint in Iran. Close to Mirjaveh last village before the border. We arrived here at 4pm they told us we couldn't cross after an hour of negotiation we slept in a hotel in Mirjaveh for the night (room 800000rials). Next morning they let us through but we had to wait for 30min on an armed escort.

Border Iran side:
1. At first border check they want to see passport and carnet (you don't get any stamps here).

2. You go to passport registration they let you cut in line. And give you passport stamp. After this you drive through the gate (which you open yourself)

3. Get to the customs office for your carnet stamp. They ask for your passport info as well and check you luggage.

All people are friendly and helpful, but. their English is bad.

Border Pakistan side:
1. You first go to an office for passport registration. You fill in a form and they take your picture. Here you get your passport stamp (Their English is very good) a levie will pick you up and escort you to the next stop. (You can also exchange money here, but you should have done that in iran rate was 105 for 1 euro while it was 125 for 1 euro in zahedan)

2. Custom police wants your passport & carnet information at the big gate.

3. Another passport check at the levie office. Afterwards levie brings you to custom office.

4. Get stamp for carnet in custom office. Levie escort back

5. Go back to levie office and wait for the escort.

If you won't make it to Dalbadin on time you will be forced to sleep at the levie office (for free) the accommodation is not very charming.

Time:
Next morning we arrived at the at the Mirjaveh checkpoint at 7am and left the pakistani border at 11:05am with an armed escort headed to Dalbadin.

Iranian border very easy. There is a very nice gentleman who helps with everything, checks, stamp for CPD, etc. Maximum 40 minutes. After we passed the gates in Pakistan. The first stop is passport check, after is Immigration office where they check the visa and last is military check. No stamp for CPD yet. At the last point an escort came and took us to the customs office. There is where we got out stamp. In total we spend about 5 hours from the Iran gate to the police station in Taftan, where we slept. All good but a lot of papers up and down, so it takes time.

The easiest and smoothest border yet. We crossed on a Sunday and it wasn't busy at all. Everyone helped us every step of the way and we barely had to do anything except wait. On both sides the officers were very friendly and did not search our vehicle

Iran side. We did not meet mr Hamid but the system was relatively easy to understand and somebody always guided us forward starting from the first container on the left, then one on the right and then we were guided to a big building with several guard posts. There they checked all the documents again and we met a (most probably secret services) officer who interrogated us for 45min and let us write down all of our information in great detail of where we come from, our social medias, education levels, job and who and where we visited in Iran. But as they did not double-check it while we sat and waited there and our social media had no compromising material from Iran (yet), they let us cross to Pakistan. We did have 200GB of raw video files hidden in the van which we planned to make into videos but nobody found them. The passport stamp and Carnet stamps were given in the last 2 containers after the big building. Altogether about 2h.

The Pakistani side. Relatively easy and somebody always took us to the next place with no confusion. In the beginning in the big building they let us fill in a form and then took our picture. There we got the passport stamps already. After that a couple more places where they wrote down all the information by hand again but we were guided to the front of the line every time. They asked for our invitation letter a couple of times so it was good we had printed that out as well in addition to the Pakistani visa. Then we got through the gates, left the border without a Carnet stamp and got a levie who took us to the levie station. Some more paper work and then they took us to the Customs office for Carnet stamps. Altogether all of this took about 2.5 h.

The escort leaves every second day (January 2023) so we had to wait an extra full day in the levie station for an escort as the time difference between Pakistan and Iran (1.5 h) makes it hard to get all the border procedures done before 12 and start the escort on the same day. The next day we started at 9 in the morning.

Nothing to pay on the border.

Its not as chaotick as it looks, i arrived at 2.30 pm and managed to get across the border and sleep at the Levies place in Taftan to get escorted the next day at 8.00 am (exactly), but that was the only exact time i ever saw in Pakistan, be prepared to go very slow and wait and wait, it tok me 6 days to get to Islamabad (driving my own car) !!

it's an easy border only the "king of the border" made it anoying and long. took us 1,5 hours and the next tourist only 30 minutes.

exchanging money at the border is a good thing. we didn't, and after the border the levies bring you to exchange centers with really bad rates. so we're sorry that we didn't change.

getting into pakistan was a lot more chaotic, but levies assist with the process. it takes time, so relax.

Enter the Iranian customs area and stop immediately at the first container left side. They insert you in the system and then you have to go to the container in the right side.
If you don’t know Hamid than you can ask for him here if they don’t mention him himself.
Hamid helps trough the process and you don’t even have to think. He doesn’t request money for that but a tip is appropriate I think.

On Pakistani side as described before but I didn’t get a Levie on my side. You still can’t get lost as everywhere the guys tell you where to go. After the process is finished (without carnet stamps) they escort you to the levie station for the night. We had to remember them some times to get the stamps in the carnet. In the evening at 7pm we were allowed to drive there with the boss of the police station. At the customs bureau they registered the carnet and gave us the needed stamps. After that we drive back to the levie station for the night.

WARNING: make sure the Iran police/immigration stamps your passport or e-visa and also registers your entry in the system.

Hamid managed the whole process for us. We left without any stamp. When we asked, Hamid told us this is the new process and all is done online.

When we left Iran it turned out nothing was registered, so we illegally entered Iran. Solution: drive to Tehran (1000km). Only after several calls of very friendly officials, and with our properly stamped carnet as evidence of a legal crossing into Iran, they let us go.

We talked to Hamid about it, but please make sure yourselves you get the entry stamp and the entry registration into the system.
