Description

We did the hike for $3 usd and took about 3 hours round trip. Really nice waterfall! The guard at the gate and later the owner, Edgar, offered us to stay across the road on the lake in their gated property for free! Private beach and palapa. Bathrooms until the park closed.

I was at this place and everything is the same.

Great place! Road to get here (even though it's the main road around the island) is very rocky sometimes. We managed in our 2wd Minivan but were a little concerned about the tires. Took us 2h to hike to the waterfall, very beautiful!
Rest as described: camped for free in the grassy area by the lake, nice swim, gazebo with table, magnificent sunset and stars, fireflies, few ants but they didn't bother to even look our way, nearly no mosquitoes, could sleep with open windows! Bathrooms horrendous though...🙈

Spent one night here, in the gated area, after the trekking to the waterfall. Very peaceful and safe. Next day we got water, from the park in front. Just talk to the guy and he will allow you to get it.

Passamos uma noite aqui, na área fechada, depois da caminhada até a cachoeira. Muito tranquilo e seguro. No dia seguinte, pegamos água, do parque em frente. É só falar com o cara e ele vai deixar você pegar.

Stayed here for the night in the gated lot after I got done hiking in the late evening. The owner opened the gate and let me stay. Unfortunately, there were too many ants in the grass. I pulled out in the parking area on the street. It is a very safe island. Night was nice and tranquil. You can have dinner under the Gazebo in the gated area. The subset was beautiful.

Although close to the dirtroad, this place is nice to sleep and it's free. You can easily swim in the lake, there is also a table. The gate is closed with a chain but the waterfall guard allowed us to open it. There are no mosquitoes or sandflies. Entrance to the waterfall costs 100C for adults and it is free for children. The hike from the lake took us a little less than 4 hours, taking our time to cool off at the waterfall (7km round trip and 600m elevation gain). On the way we came across 4 howler monkeys. The sunset from here is wonderful!

Report Check-In

Perfect spot to visit the waterfall early morning. The guard even opened us the little gate so we could park safely here. Locals came around to fish but no one bothered us. We didn’t pay nothing to camp here, just our ticket to the waterfall the next morning.

Report Check-In

Magnifique endroit directement au bord du lac. Grand stationnement droit. Au pied du départ de la randonnée des chutes (12km aller retour).
100c par adulte pour la rando, gratuit pour la nuit.
Coucher de soleil incroyable!

Beautiful place directly at the lake. Large niveled parking lot. At the start of the waterfalls hike (12km round trip).
100c per adult for the hike, free for the night.
Amazing sunset!

Report Check-In

This place looks awesome. Unfortunately completely flooded due to rainy season. See picture.
Guy at the entrance desk for the waterfalls was super friendly, you can park at the side of the street if you want to do the hike. Big enough for taller rigs as well.

Report Check-In

it is a quiet and safe campsite in front of the lake!

Report Check-In

We stayed here for one night after the waterfall hike. It's free even if you don't do the hike. Very nice and calm place. Remember to put all your things away at night. We had left our body board to dry outside and the morning when we left it was gone.

Report Check-In

Lindo lugar, tranquilo y seguro buena señal de celular, gente amable. Acampamos dos semanas. Hay un comedor y hospedaje llamado Karina dónde conseguir cervezas frías, una buena ducha y rica comida a muy buen precio. Recomendable

Report Check-In

The grassy area with gazebos shown in photos is gated off now, but you can still park in the parking lot or along the road by the piers no problem. We stayed one night and hiked San Ramon waterfall the next day. Be warned near the water there are TONS of small bugs, small enough to get through our bug net and bother us all night despite not biting.

Report Check-In

Still free to camp on the water. Hike to the waterfall still great too. The drive up is really gnarly right now, needs very high clearance, we had to abandon halfway.

Report Check-In

Still 100c pp for the hike and free camping. Beautiful sunset. There’s a pier next to this place, with a rocky path, where you can get a great panoramic pic with the sunset and the volcano.
The hike as of today is not that easy. There are some landslides at the end of the trail. Not recommended for children nor the not so adventurous person.
Cars not allowed at this time either, even though I thought my Defender would make it easily, they didn’t allow saying it was not possible.

Report Check-In

We parked by the water next to the palapa for free the night before our hike. Bathrooms available at the top of the hill; security all night. The price for the waterfalls the next day was C100 per person. It rained all night and morning but we decided to give it a try anyway. If you have a good rain jacket and pair of hiking boots, you'll be fine! We hiked all 3KM up and then down in approximately 3.5 hours (including breaks and 15-20 minutes at the waterfall). It was moderate in difficulty and 90% of the time we were walking uphill. When you get to the end of the trail by the river, go left on the rocks all the way up until you see the waterfall (we got lost so better to give you guys a heads up). It was a great hike with beautiful scenery and cooler weather, a bit rainy and muddy but fun nonetheless. I recommend!

Report Check-In

Great place to stay for free if you paid the 3$pp hike to the nice waterfall ! Guardians will let you go to the flat grassy area near the palapa with table, light, hooks for hammocks and electricity (they asked to not plug our camper, but OK for the phones...).
I wouldn't go 2km up with my van to do the hike, it would be as fast as walking. The road is really rough, and I think you need a 4wd if it rained. Plus, these 2km are nice to walk, under eucalyptus shade.

Report Check-In

Really lovely place, quiet with beautiful views on the lake and Volcano behind. There is a big palapa with power sockets and light bulbs to enjoy dinner outside and the guard lets you use the bathrooms of the rooms they rent out. Lots of wind so not hot during the night and free provided you hike up to the waterfall thr next day (100C per adult). The hike can be demanding in the end and there is only little water at this time of the year but enough to lay in the pool. The road to get there is paved except for the last 5 minutes but doable by any rig.

Report Check-In

for 100 cordobas more you can take your van up the trail for the first 2 km, reducing the hike up to 45 minutes. 2wd jigh clearance ok

Report Check-In

road up is unpaved but manageable in our non 4x4 van. we arrived at 1630 and the owner was friendly and let us park at the front of the entrance for free inside the gate. had beautiful view of the sunset, access to gazebo to cook on our own stove, and access to electricity. guard across the road was friendly. in the morning we entered the waterfall grounds and paid 3usd pp and 3usd for the car and could use their bathrooms and wifi at the restaurant (wifi: @ometepe). didn't risk driving the 2km further up to the waterfall so walked the 3km up and 3km back. was nice although in the dry season, there isn't a lot of water at the waterfall. nice for a shallow dip into the pond though.

Report Check-In

They will offer you to camp in this spot for free if you pay the entrance fee to do the hike to the cascada which is $3dlls per person + $3dlls for the car. There is a nice shaded palapa with electrical hook ups and light, grassy field just right in the lake. The security guard is just across the street, good for 1 night as the walk to the bathrooms and showers is like 200yds away. Very quiet and safe. Pet friendly, we loved it.

Report Check-In

$3pp. 3km up and 3km down. At least 3 hrs walk in total. If you are not in good physical condition, it’s tough. You can do half way with 4x4. Slept in the ‘gated’ parking lot in front of the entrance. Good option.

Report Check-In

Nice place for overnight in front of the lake. Free. If you arrive here, you should go to the waterfalls...

Report Check-In

Same as prior posts. The hike is pretty strenuous. The waterfall is nice and the pool is small but refreshing. The free, gated campsite is lovely. A good deal!

Report Check-In

didnt stay here but it looks really nice and the owners seem very lovely. you drive 2/3rds up to the waterfall (which is NOT 4x4 but it is rocky and steep) and then you walk the rest.

Report Check-In

did the hike for 90c pp and we're allowed to stay for free in the small gated area
this had lights and electricity
a good breeze most of the evening but when the wind died the bugs were everywhere

Report Check-In

Information still accurate : 3$ per person for the hike, 3h round trip (the waterfalls are pretty amazing, but the pond is tiny). You can climb until an additional parking lot which is closer from the waterfalls with your 4x4 / ATV / dirtbike, but we haven't asked the price.
Like for the previous travellers, they offered to camp directly on the small fenced pier, right on the lake ! Really nice spot.

We just did the hike. $3 per person, and $3 for the car. $9 hike ouch! We drove most the way up. YOU NEED 4X4!!! From where you park maps.me said the trail was one mile...our GPS after hiking said 2.25 miles one way. Lonely Planet sells the last part of the hike as relatively flat and easy. It's not "hard", but it's also not flat or easy. We are careful which hikes we take our dog on since he is 14 years old and all the miss information made it so we were carrying our dog for parts. No big deal really. Still great hike. The drive has great views, saw some monkeys. The hike is lush and junglee. In March there was enough water for it to still be pretty, and you could get cooled off, but I wouldn't call it swimming.
We asked about a boat/fishing tour of the gard and he said they didn't do that??

Report Check-In

Just down the way there are two hospedajes. We stayed at the cascada and the owners were the absolute bomb digity. Horses, bikes and fishing available. Went on a panga for 4 hours and caught one large Guapote fish. Delicious meal prepared by the cook.

Report Check-In

Free camping (after hiking the cascada for 3$). Bathrooms and wifi available at the restaurant. Restaurant not worth the money. They can fill your water for a fee as well. 24 hour security at the gate across the road from the pier. Great camp spot

Report Check-In

It is a nice hike, dogs allowed. But the waterfall is pretty much a water trickle. Enough of a pond for Maya to swim but not for people.

Report Check-In

All details are still up-to-date. We also enjoyed the waterfall and a nice sunset at this quiet camping spot. During the night a security guard was around and some fishing guys in the morning.

Report Check-In

We did the hike for $3us/p and took about 3 hours round trip. Really nice waterfall! The guard at the gate and later the owner offered us to stay across the road on the lake in their gated property for free! Private beach and palapa. Bathrooms until the park closed.
