Something not right?

Description

This is a boondocking site on BLM land. There are lots of rigs here, but it seems fairly quiet. This spot is very close to the highway, so there is constant but faint highway noise. The site is wide open and fairly flat, good for all rigs. Make sure to read the signs for allowable camping areas. And those areas have a row of signs on the far perimeter that cation no motorized vehicles or camping beyond.

Don’t trust Google maps. Driving on Interstate 8 from Yuma, take the first exit after the agricultural inspection station, which is exit 164. Take a left at the offramp’s stop sign and drive over the freeway overpass to the gas station. Pass the gas station on your right. The paved road becomes gravel, then take the right immediately after the large two-pole power line, which is immediately before the Pilot Knob sign. The gravel road follows the power lines the whole way. If you drive too many miles down it will eventually turn into sand.

Got a good cell signal here for all carriers including Google Fi.

I like this place. Not very scenic, but big and quiet. I barely can hear the train on the other side of the highway. There can be loud off-road RZR vehicles and motorbikes at times, but not at night. The 14-day camping limit is enforced by BLM Rangers. Very rarely but nonetheless they will drive here to inform campers. My biggest dislike is that there is often a plastic or chemical trash burn or something happening just in the other side of the US/Mexico border. The smoke is visible most days. On rare occasions the wind brings the faint-smelling fumes this way.

Very near here I got stuck 32.74085, -114.78115

There is the typical hard gravel sand free surface but that turns into something that looks different. It is a hard surface like a crust that is a few inches thick then a foot of sand before getting back to firmer surface.

If you get stuck call Affordable Towing, they got me out with a flatbed, cable winch and long chains.

There are far better BLM places to stay as the hard dirt surface is too close to the freeway. Head north on the Sidewinder Rd and plenty of quiet and open BLM places.

Lots of BLM land here and just down from Long Term camping area. Follow the road with Hydro Wire poles over you get off Highway 8 at Sidewinder Rd on south side.
Close to Yuma and Q Casino next exit east. Also next exit east has border crossing to Mexico. A great spot with lots of space and gravel coverage. Can stay up to 14 days. Look for signs for designated camping areas. Sand dunes close by so probably a lot of ATV’s around on weekends. Take a drive down to see them…amazing!

Lots of space and easy for any sized rig. Flat and open. Trains and interstate but not bad. Border Patrol presence here as drive bus and fly overs. BP landed a helicopter just off the edge of where I was sleeping..were on the ground about ten minutes...freaked me out a bit. I would think they would alert campers if there was a problem in the area though. I stayed a few night because I’d ease to the border crossing to Los Algodones. I would stay again because it is not crowded at all.

We have stayed here multiple nights over the past month. The key to finding this site is to turn right at the power lines and follow the road as it follows the power lines. At 1.6 miles the free camping starts. I like the spot furthest down the road (basically third pull out along the road). Yes there's highway noise but it's not so bad. Overall it's an OK spot.

The directions in the description are good. Go SOUTH off the exit, pass the gas station, head WEST just before the "LTV" sign, then follow the dirt road to the pin, about 1.6mi. It's not clearly marked that this lot is free. Hopefully we don't get "the knock".

I like it. I drove as far as I could away from the highway. Good view of the sunset and hills in the distance. It’s 20 minutes away from Planet fitness & Albertsons. Trains were not so bothersome that far out. I’ve lived near trains and the Mississippi River for a good part of my adult life so actually found them comforting. It’s free and it’s BLM, supposedly you are supposed to pay a dollar per day but I haven’t seen a camp host yet. The signs are a bit misleading. There are dumpsters here too although you “need a permit”, not sure exactly how that works either. The Chevron close by has a bunch of decent snacks and a water filling station. They also have a dump station. Overall, not bad.

This place sucks. Loud loud loud. No one mentioned the trains that run all night. Bring ear plugs or you will be sorry

This is a boondocking site on BLM land. There are lots of rigs here, but it seems fairly quiet. This spot is very close to the highway, so there is constant highway noise. The site is wide open and fairly flat. There seems to be two main areas that are occupied by boondockers, but the land on the other side of the road from this spot is BLM land also and if you head just a little bit west down the road there is another open area with a homemade fire ring.

Google maps didn't want to route me here because it doesn't show the road going all the way through, but the map is wrong. Exit I8 at exit 164, make a left onto Sidewinder Rd. Turn right directly before the long term camping area. You will see a sign for the 14 day camping area 1.6 miles.
