Large sandy lot, room for HUGE rigs, best to park in the north part of the lots further from the canal road when you can to avoid border patrol and worker traffic which is light. There are fish in the canal (carp and White Amur). You can dump at the gas station next to the hotel in Wellton. There is a water fill place near the feed store that is $0.50/5gal but only takes coins and tastes like plastic. It smells bad here when it rains, but is otherwise fine. Lots of long term folks here, be sure to get your permit. Overall, it’s pretty quiet and if you need to get a run or ride in, the dirt road along the canal goes on for many miles. You could easily get a marathon or more in.
Report Check-In"No Trespassing" signs at both entrances. Permit required. State Trust land. Enforced by local Sheriff when I was there in late Spring 2020.
Report Check-InIs that a feed lot I smell!? Of course it is. Nothing smells like it. McElhaney Cattle Co. is NE of here, the direction of the wind today. If it’s a westerly, there’s no problem.
Report Check-InNice place to camp overnight. Note that this is state land trust land and if you are caught without a (inexpensive) permit you can be charged with trespassing!
Report Check-Inbig open space. does say something about a permit at entrance but no one bothered us. neighbours ended up having a bit of a party with numerous caravans, loud music and a bonfire but the space is big enough that you can move of things get annoying. nice dessert scenery to wake up to but unfortunately lots of trash around.
Report Check-InAs described, even the fish. There is a sign at the entrance stating something about a permit, but for a short stay I am sure it is not an issue. People do run their generators, and it's nothing too special to look at, but convenient off 8.
Report Check-InLot of RV'ers and fulltimers.
Some get apparently stuck in the sand, we didn't.
We went where there was a lot of RV's, we were ok. There's a lot of Class A and Fifth-wheel. We have a 22' feet Class C.
Mountains all around. Nice sunrises and sunsets. There is fish in the canal nearby. Nice place to take walks.
One negative is the noise, not very noisy but better to know it. Some RVers had generator (you never heard about solar panels guys?!). A few trains. There was coyotes howling one night and my dog kept barking back at them. That's nice to hear usually but if your dog likes to talk as much as ours do, it can be annoying in the middle of the night ;)
I was shocked to see Fifth-wheel and caravan that probably can't move from there no more (flat tires and in really bad shape). Full of scraps all around them. 5-6 golf carts dismantled. But hey... it's a free place, you outta expect this... I guess.
Do your part and be respectful. Leave only footprints.
Report Check-InLarge open area about 1 mile south of I-8. Room for many big rigs. There are restaurants and fuel (diesel/gas) at exit. There is also a family dollar and dollar general on north side of exit. Wellton VFW has cheap drinks and dinner on Mon/Wed/Fri. There are two full service campgrounds on north side of exit also. Pioneer and Tier Drop.
