Something not right?

Description

We parked in Guillermo's field for one night. We joined friends who spent 3 nights here without trouble. We had a great time and a warm welcome from Guillermo and his family. We highly recommend this place which is the best solution to park in Laguna perla (otherwise it's street parking). The access road is narrow but no problem with our 7m long. We had some flexible branches on the roof on the way to get there (3m high) but nothing terrible.

Latest Check-Ins

Despite the last entry for this place, we came here. And we enjoyed it very much!
Guillermo Ingram and his family (including his son Rabi) were very welcoming, but they did not expect visitors (24th of December) and were not prepared to host us. Since it was dark already, they asked us to stay at the Police Station in Laguna de Perlas and come back the next morning - which we did.
They told us that the community between Awas and Laguna de Perlas is not a good place, but Awas is safe. They were really concerned about our safety, still picturing the two attempted robberies from three years ago. We personally felt safe and welcomed in Awas (and in Laguna de Perlas). Nothing remotely sketchy happened. Raby came with us on the few occasions that we wanted to drive from Awas to Laguna de Perlas.
We stayed two nights with the family and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, the sun, beach (the water is very shallow for at least 100m and nice to play in).
Rabi took us on a trip with his canoe up the river and answered all our questions about the local culture. Guillermo is a very interesting character and speaks, like everyone there, good conversational English.
People definitely checked us out, but not in a negative way. The Misquito- and Creol-Communities are poor and a (fancy) car will attract attention.
They told us that in season (February to May) many Tourists come here for the blue water, the fresh shrimp (1lb for C$70 🤩) and the chill atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Conclusion: If you want to get a glimpse into the caribbean culture of Nicaragua, come here and enjoy some days with Guillermo and his family.
The road from Laguna de Perlas is narrow but possible with Sprinter-sized. Parts of the road might be flooded, but the local Tuktuks never have problems.

Also worth adding that the road is mostly paved from Rama and in great condition. A couple of small sections under construction. Don't be put off by the first 2km of really bad dirt road out of Rama, it improves soon!

Raby and his family are lovely! I have nothing but good things to say about them and their hospitality whilst we were there. Raby is going to school soon to train to be a teacher, but his father Guillamet and mother will still be there.

A great grassy site right by the water with a palapa. Amazingly cool air. Bar nextdoor open in afternoons but closes at 6. Raby didn't specify an amount but we gave him 200 / night. All the family speak great English. Cute dogs and inquisitive kids (be prepared for an audience!)

However, Pearl Lagoon was not great. See other entry on here about our attempted robbery whilst walking to town. After this Raby agreed it was not safe even in the daytime. Drive or take a taxi.

We were also robbed at Raby's place, whilst lounging in hammocks a guy came up offered coconuts and being generally weird. Eventually he left but not before grabbing my phone. Fortunately we noticed and my boyfriend chased him down and rugby tacked him. We got the phone back. Raby was furious and really went for the guy.

Raby recommended we take our kayaks up the nearby river. As we were leaving it again another local shouted something to the effect of we'd 'go to prison if we paddled on his river' and was generally aggressive.

Unfortunately I can't recommend Pearl Lagoon. We'd hoped to kayak out to the Pearl Keys but didn't feel comfortable either going out there or leaving our van. In 3 months in Central America this is by far the most unfriendly and dangerous place we've been - we haven't had any worse than a scamming gas station attendant until now.

Full marks to Raby & family though. So sad that their town is so unwelcoming to tourists. There is an obvious drug problem.

I'm sure that anyone staying in town in a hotel would have a very different experience, but unfortunately we did not.
