Description

Unpleasant goodbye from such a nice country. I just quickly stopped for withdrawing money and got held up by the traffic police in fro of Banco do Brasil. They wanted me to hand over all original papers, just looking at them wouldn't be enough. The situation escalated and in the end, they started searching everywhere in my car for something they could fine me for, in the end they fines me for wrong parking and partially disguised license plates (I ducktaped the California sign on top, not the actual number). They towed away my van, 15km out of town until I would pay the fine and the tow away truck of course. Then I could go and find my van again.

Long story short, I talked to a lot of people from the town afterwards (we kind of became he attraction of the day). They confirmed that they have a lot of corrupt police in Chuy. Another guy told me how he handed over the originals and they made him pay a fine before getting them back. The car deposit was full of cars and motorbikes, all confiscated,so I doesn't seem to be a first time.

I ran the same situation through my head several times, I don't know how I could have avoided this mess in the first place. Just be aware that in my experience and according to locals, Chuy has quite some corrupt police. Since there is not much else in town, perhaps it's best to just drive through.

Whomever posted this is overreacting.

I was stopped and they asked for vehicle documents and driver’s license. After a few minutes they brought it back and wished me happy travels. Very friendly and professional.
