Primitive Rd out of the northeast corner of the GSD National Park leads to 14 designated camp spots in the first 2.5 miles, 7 more through mile 5.8 (between the park and Medano Pass)
Most sites have bear boxes and fire pits. Some have roads to drive into, some are walk in tent sites.
A couple shallow river crossings and some soft sand. Other than that road is decent but 4WD needed.

The road out is still closed a few miles in. I could not fet to the site. The ranger said it would be another month, maybe until it's open...due to snow/wetness. He said it has to fully dry out first.
Report Check-InPrimitive Road is back open. Can get to the campsites from the National Park, as long as you have a high-clearance 4WD. We saw a Subaru Forester completely stuck. You’ll need to reduce air pressure. There’s a free air fill, dump station, and water tap near the park campground.
Road is a bit tough and narrow, but the campsites are great. Few people here due to the challenging road. Bear boxes and fire pits with grill grate at each site. Access to a small river in some areas.
Views are amazing. Rocky points on either side, and we could even see a small portion of the dunes from an outlook near our site. Beautiful for sunsets. Also had a bunch of mule deer pass through.
There is a toilet on the road to the sites, but it’s still fairly far away (about halfway between the park campground and the campsites in the preserve).
Drive took us about 30-40 minutes from the park campground to the campsites - but I go pretty slow the entire time. A couple of decent river crossings too, about one foot or so in early September. Likely deeper in earlier summer.
If you can camp here, go for it. But if you’re looking for something easily accessible, look elsewhere (like the defunct San Luis State Campground).
