We can pass without any control from Calama to Arica. At that moment we have almost no gasoline. If you’re under same situation, ask for ‘POSADA’ just before coming this point(left side, heading for Arica). Next to POSADA, you can find one garage to have gasoline. It’s quite expensive, but with filling a bit continued to Pozo Almonte(There is 2 gasoline stations). Of course, it’s better to prepare before. But sometimes life doesn’t go our way……

Report Check-In

Well we arrived here from Calama and they told us that we couldn't continue and had to go back and take the road along the coast through Iquique to go north because the road was flooded due to heavy rain in the mountains.
Only big truck could go through. Some small car did had crossed but they broke because apparently was 50/70cm of water but with mud and all the mud was in the radiator so was almost 30 cars stopped in the last 2 days.

Recommendation : ask before taking to road is it is ok or take directly the one along the coast to avoid to go back.

Report Check-In

Customs (Aduana) are at the limit between Antofagasta and Tarapaca region (Iquique) because Iquique is a duty free zone (zona franca). They just stamped our TIP and that’s it. 2 min stop. We are headed northbound and we’re told they check the stamp when exiting the region.

Coming from north to south with a chilen car (crossed from Peru the day before)
We tried to renew our “Permicio de circulation” at Arica but we couldn’t because we arrived at the weekend.
We decided to continue driving anyway and then we arrived to this check point and the only thing that they asked for was to see the Permicio de circulation !
Don’t know how but the lady just looked at it and stamped the paper, maybe she didn’t notice but we felt soooo lucky!!
Anyway we recommend to come with the Permicio de circulation up to date ! Or just pray

Report Check-In

They just ask for the permiso de circulación and passport. They give you a paper that you have to show when you come back. Took us 5 minutes.

1st prize for most confusing ‘’border’’ ever :-)
1st step (heading North) - Pull up and park literally anywhere....take car documentation and passport to Aduana for a stamp...continue to wander around aimlessly looking for the supposed 2nd step of visiting the Carabineros....when no one to be found, continue on your journey.
Heading South (yeah, we went back a second time for fun) Aduana for stamp on papers, crawl at 3mph past the Carabineros until they finally see you and wave you on to continue your journey.
For us, no fruit, veg or drug check ☺️

Report Check-In

We are coming from the north, we went to one of the windows, they checked papers and then came to check the vehicle during about 15 seconds. Bored and not friendly officers.

Report Check-In

They put the vehicle through a big scanner and checked only vehicle document (tip). Whole process 20 min.

Report Check-In

We just had to show the driver's passport, the Permiso de Circulación for the car and report the number of travelers. There's a poster on the Aduana's office saying what you can bring and what you have to declare (sorry, forgot to take a photo), but as far as I recall it didn't mention anything about fruits or veggies. We got a form stamped with our details and continued our trip north. No physical check at all in our case, and we didn't see any other cars in front of us being checked.

Report Check-In

No mention of fruit but the car was x-rayed for drugs on our way south

Report Check-In

Fruit check too but we didn't understand what was really forbidden...

Report Check-In

They just wanted to check our paperwork and stamp our form. Didn't check anything in the van (both directions).

Report Check-In

No car check, we just parked and stood in line to show them our border papers which they stamped and sent us on our way. Show the stamp to the guard on the way out, took less than 10 mins and you can grab a snack to drink if you want :)

Report Check-In

Pull up where everyone else does and head into the building to your left. Wanted to see passports and vehicle paperwork.

Took a quick look inside the car but clearly not bothered enough to look very hard :)
