Description

We were driving from mapastepec to tapachula and before huixtla there is an old toll or aduana. Not operational. Three men showing credentials ask us for the car tip. I opened the window just a little bit. I didnt trust them. They say that they have to see the tip in order to return the deposit. We said that we were no going to cross. They say that we have to cross today because of the volcano situation in guatemala. Then he tried to get inside through the window but he couldnt and i drove away. If you feel something is not fine lock the doors, open the window just a little bit and be ready to drive away. Maybe dont even stop, but we were not sure. Hope this helps. Safe travels.

Add on to last comment.. it typed conceal, that’s autocorrect.. they asked about our TIP and I said ‘yes at the border’ and we drove on..

Report Check-In

First looks like a donation stop and then 2 guys with cards around their neck came to us and asked where we are going. Guatemala, so they start telling you you have to conceal your TIP, so then we drove on... no major issues

Report Check-In

There were locals collecting money for the school so we gave some coins. They were very pleasant. Then some guy with very good English wearing a t-shirt and something hanging from a lanyard what wouldn’t even get you backstage said he needed to check our papers. We just kept driving.

Jap still going on just continue driving don’t stop! Nothing will happen

Report Check-In

These crooks are still here. They will jump into action the moment they see gringo. Don’t stop, no worries.

Report Check-In

We drove by at the same time police was passing. The guys took off their badges and put them on again after the police went through. Truck in front of us did not stop neither did we.

Report Check-In

Still here. Told us to pull over to the side, just say yes and keep driving.

Report Check-In

Still there. Guy with a name badge but normal shirt tried to flag us down motioning a square shape and pointing at our TIP. we slowed down but kept driving, he banged the window but nothing else happened, road workers after just waved us through. No one chased us!

Weren't stopping any local cars - no other vehicles stopped.

Report Check-In

Still there. Traveling south on a Motorbike, they flagged me down. Spoke English, asked where I was going. I told them Guatemala, and demanded to "check" my TVIP. I told them that I was not going to give it to them, as the real Aduana is further toward Guatemala. I rode off and the road workers just past smiled and nodded at me.

Don't turn off your engine, just keep going through. They didn't use any force or try to stop me from leaving, but don't risk it.

Report Check-In

No one was there except a police man waving everyone through. Looks like the scammers have been busted

Report Check-In

Just people selling snacks, nothing wrong !

Report Check-In

Yep, those same guys were there today when I passed going south at 5pm. Chatted for a bit then said I don’t need your stamp and drove off.

Report Check-In

Same scam. They tried to wave us down and get us to stop, we slowed and just rolled through. They have badges that make them look official but are wearing normal civilian clothes.

Report Check-In

We drove past here today, and thanks to iOverlander I knew what was potentially waiting. Due to the lorry in front of me and the bumps I had already almost stopped, they waived and I stopped. He asked for the TIP straight away (in Spanish) and I just said “no”. He asked, “don’t you speak Spanish?” And wanted his buddy who spoke English to continue, I didn’t leave them a chance and told them they had no authority and drove off. Whole thing didn’t take more than a few seconds.

Please be aware and just don’t stop, they were wearing a red and white T-shirt (which might change of course) and they had something around their neck that would have been their fake ID-card.

Report Check-In

same place same scam. beware they want you to show tip papers.
I just told them I was not leaving Mexico., and that seemed to work.
guy speaks English so I said I've heard about you guys. Then drove off waiting with baited breath that a cop would pull me over.

Report Check-In

These guys were here again - 5pm going south. Just normal blokes on regular clothes trying to stop traffic. Luckily some guy in front of us was towing so this distracted them and we drove straight through. They tried to pull us over but we just ignored them.

We hadn't driven this route a few weeks ago going north and no one was there. The official aduana stop is just a little further south as already noted on the app.

Report Check-In
