Description

Very bad road.
UPDATE: no road Block on january 17th 2023.

They’ve blocked us with the rope and asked for 100Q..give them 2 apples and some bread.
More than 2 hours in a rocky bumpy and narrow road.

Very scenic though. I wouldn’t do it again.
watch out, risk to flat a tire or break your car touching the ground with the body etc..

Latest Check-Ins

No road block today. We passed at around 6pm. Road is ok the first 15km and then it’s rocky. High clearance is better

Report Check-In

Scenic drive, but rocky road. Some parts are ok but I would recommand 4x4 AMD high clearance for most of it.
Took me 3 hours more or less until Campur. But being there was priceless, looking at locals that rarely see a stranger there. Some villages on the road, no blocked road tho. Just smiling and waving at people help to create the first contact and cancel the fear of the unknown.
It was very beautiful.
Good adventure for 4x4.
Please respect the locals!!

Report Check-In

From south to north. 3 roadblocks with ropes
1. two kids digging asking for 50q. We pushed the car against the rope and they let it down
2. two elder guys. One came directly very close to my window holding his axe ready very threatening. Asked for 100q. We offered 5, we just offered something because he was very affronting. He kept asking for 100 then 50 then left us away with 5. strange guy, maybe bad experience with tourists
3. single dude working very hard on the road very sweaty, asked nicely for a contribution. We gave him a bread and he was fine with it

Report Check-In

Like others have said, very bad road. It was doable with our 2WD but would avoid if possible. One guy tried to ask for money, we only gave him water and two apples. He was very pushy but we did not budge. Very scenic route but not worth the risks it presents.

hi! after we read this bad road we have found the right way to go to coban, and that was a very good road, is in the west of this one and the name is AV-9
hola! después de leer esta señal de bad road pensamos que tendríamos que dar una gran vuelta para bajar a coban y semuc champey, pero justo al oeste aparece una calle llamada AV-9 y está en muy buen estado

Report Check-In

We did it in a 2wd w/o high clearance - is possible but definitely not something I would recommend. It took us around 3 hours from Fray to Lanquin. But even worse than the bad road have been the 3 road blocks - each asking for 100 Quetzales. As some of them played around with their machetes we payed them 5 Quetzales. We spoke to a local afterwards, they recommend to take a picture and say you will give it to the police. Don’t know it that is a good idea when someone has a machete...

Drove through here yesterday, we have a 2wd for econoline e350, it's not big but it weighs 4 ton, we had no problems as the clearance is pretty good but if the road was any wetter it may have been a problem. also can confirm that it is the worst bit of road we have seen so far and we averaged 5-15kms an hour the entire way. It was
however very beautiful but yeah took a very long time.
We didnt see the guy with the rope.

Report Check-In

It is indeed a very bad road! From the turning on the north side (near Fray Bartolome) heading south, the first 17km are good tar, then there is 25km of very bad dirt road. We have a high clearance 4x4 and that sections took us over 1.5hrs. 4x4 isn't essential, but definitely don't do this route without high clearance. After the 25km rough section, it is gravel but smooth-graded. One guy tried to stop us with a rope asking for 100Q 😂😂. We gave him 5Q and a can of Coke then he let us through.

It can save you time instead of going back to Guatemala City..but is really bad!
Very scenic though. I wouldn’t do it again, my plan was to go back trough Guatemala for reaching then Tikal, but a guide told me “is not that bad” 😒😡
I don’t get why you should stress your vehicle like that, risk to flat a tire or break your car touching the ground with the body etc..
