Latest Check-Ins

We arrived just after dark and parked in the large grassy lot right next to the kayak place, stoked on the beautiful views of the lake, couldn’t hear any noise from the road. Just as we were going to sleep, multiple people started tapping on the outside of our van and shouting in Spanish.

We opened the front door to 3 police officers, who told us repeatedly that it’s a civic infraction to park here and that it’s a dangerous area. They took our IDs, which thankfully did get returned, and made us open the rear doors to look in the van. I repeatedly told them that we understood and would drive immediately to a different spot down the road, but they kept us there for some time— continually saying it’s an infraction and we can’t park here, we think fishing for some kind of bribe possibly?

We managed to get out of it by insisting we didn’t know and thanking them for “looking out for us”, and in the end nothing happened, but it was a bit stressful when they wouldn’t let us just leave. Such a shame, because other overlanders have clearly parked here without issue, but I definitely wouldn’t risk the encounter we just had. Unless you arrive when the kayak place is open, I would not recommend this spot.

We didn't sleep on the Kayak place as it was closed, but just outside, there is a big flat parking. Lot of locals in the afternoon, but we had a very quite night! Police came knocking at the van around 8pm just making sure we were OK! We asked them if it was safe to sleep here, they said it was ok!

We didn't stay here but just outside the gates there are a few level spots on the lakeshore where we parked. Nobody said anything or bothered us during the night.
I honestly didn't find it at all noisy to sleep with the highway nearby, there are many types of birds to watch, overall enjoyable.
Not so enjoyable was trying to get turned back around to go Northwest. The underpasses are too low for truck campers so you have to go back along the highway abouy 5km. If you're heading south it's no problem of course.

Rentals operated by Kayak Club. They have charged us 100peso per night. Close proximity to very busy MEX57 brings a constant noise to the whole area comparable with most Pemex stations. In the morning we have noticed there is no shortage of open level spaces on the lake shore streatching NORTH of the Kayak Club where one could boondock if self contained.

Attached photo has telephone numbers if anyone is interested to make arrangements to go kayaking....

Personally, I would not stay or kayak there again. It is just too noisy and expensive for what you get.
