Addendum to Erics Comment (driving up the volcano): We've been to the Ministerio in David. You cannot self drive up the volcano anymore, need to take a tour unfortunately.

Spent 2 nights here. One before driving up to the Vulcan, and another on the way back. This is a good place to rest, but use of toilets depend on the guard of the day. One night we were allowed, and the other not. Free. If you plan to drive up you need an authorization that you get in David (Ministério del Medio Ambiente). The car must be a really good 4x4 and you must be experienced. Is not easy and with lots of big loose rocks. Sharp switch backs in very steep terrain.

Good spot to camp before hiking up at midnight. it's 13.5Km to the top. the top is cold with strong wind chill. colder than Acatenango in Guatemala. average hike time is 5 hrs up, 3 down. at the top, if you are early, look for the open gate to the right of the info sign. inside there are two doors to the right of a yellow building. a ranger stays there and if he hears you he will let you in from the cold. after hiking down I paid the 5$ fee.

We could not drive up with our van, but around 300m ahead, where the asphalt ends, we drove left and after 500m we parked the car at the river. We just parked there and started the hike at midnight, and came back 12h later. It is hard to do it but to watch the sunrise on top, it's worth to do it and it was a great experience!
If you do it in the night, bring lights and warm clouths for the top and some water (had 3 liters each).
To walk down it is very slippery. There is also a place where you could camp in a tent on the top. You need probably reservation for that.

The last two hundred meters of the gravel road to the entrance of the the park are very bad and steep. We were allowed to stay on the small parking lot to the left of the entrance for the night. At 7am it got loud because many campesinos passed by on their way to work.
