Wild camping next to Lake Masaya. Accessible by a 4x4 trail of lava and sand, pretty decent track. Enough flat spaces on various side tracks which are not in any mapping app. We drove here with two motorcycles and camped 3m from the lake! Really quit during night and we were the only ones. Good option before/after visiting Masaya Vulcan as it is not next to the noisy highway but only 15min away!
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
The track is a bit overgrown and rutted out at the north entry, definitely ok on motos but might be challenging in cars. High clearance a must on this side, other side (south) wasn’t too bad. Low branches might be an issue for higher rigs.
Report Check-InA few nice spots off this road, tucked behind cover, no garbage from what we saw, but a metric F*%# TON of mosquitoes! I would NOT recommend this place for the sole reason that a park ranger approached us in the morning and said that it was not safe and unadvisable to stay here due to vandalism and thefts off this road. He advised staying at the entrance to the park where there are bathrooms and security. From what I understood of the Nicaraguan Spanish, i felt as if he gave us a warning not to come here again...
Report Check-InDidn't make it all the way to the lakeshore with my bicycle. I felt too tired to go down all the way. Saw some potential campspots before the lakeshore: Along the shortcut was a flat clearing (bicycle, motorbike, foot access only) and at the southwestern corner of the longer road/none shortcut way, there was another track foot away from the dirt road.
I camped in some tall grass after the vegetation disappeared. Some foot and motorbike traffic was there in the evening and morning.
Report Check-InDrove here to possibly camp. We didn't stay but a nice free option in a quiet location beside the lake. Small trail down about 15 metres to water. Lots of plastics floating on edge of lake. Couple other spots nearby to stay the night as well. Temp felt nice in shade with a breeze beside the water. We carried on south to the other free spot located. Will update..
