NOTE -- there may be at least one more pay point half way up the road so keep your ticket and use that to maybe avoid paying twice
Paid 25 Bobs to drive up Death Road
We don't have any photos of this place yet.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
15 kms in from the top there's a slip. Only passable by foot or carry your bicycle over it
Report Check-Inthis checkpoint is open with nobody at the ticket office between 18-07.30h. possible earlier in the afternoon also nobody there but we arrived here late. As of 6/7/23 the death road is open for cars again. still roadworks though, so some waiting probably.
Report Check-InThe asked 5bobs here when we were exiting (2people in a car, received a ticket) but we paid 25bobs and 5bobs (received two separate tickets) at the station with the ambulanceo on the other end. At least they keep the road in good condition
Report Check-InThe total cost we paid for Death Road is 5 BOB (2 people). It also says that on the receipt that we were given at this location. We must’ve somehow bypassed another checkpoint without paying as it seems everyone else paid more??
Report Check-InRoad in good condition, only one time payment of BOB 25 per person at the central 2 de febrero (which is also where you’ll find the stand by ambulance to patch you up in case you eat $h1t!) other than a few cyclists coming down (mostly on the wrong side of the road) things were very quiet. Nowhere near as squelchy as some of the roads in northern Peru but beautiful vistas, worth the BOB 25 I think.
Report Check-InDeath road is now officially Kombiproved. there was one steep part at the beginning, otherwise all was chilled even though I wouldn't say the road is well maintained.
Report Check-InAs described, best start the drive from here either very early morning BEFORE all the bicycle tours come down (until 10am) or then after 2:30pm.
Road is good gravel quality, two or three steeper section but no problem for a truck camper. If you drive upwards you have the right of way and you stop on the hill side so crossing another car is a piece of cake :-)
We have to agree that the drive is not thrilling at all (especially after having driven through Peruvian or Colombian mountain roads) but it’s still a scenic drive with nice views, especially the upper half.
Payed BOB 25 for the car, the lady selling the ticket said there will be another BOB 5 fee half way up but nobody was there to collect the money when we drove past...
If you come from La Paz and want to do the road then drive the new road first and start the “Death Road” from Coroico’s side. As you go only uphill, you have the right of way and never have to back down if needed. Also as its narrow mountain road, there is signs everywhere that keep to your left. You are always on the mountain side and who ever comes down have to let you pass and move over to the cliff side. We started from Coroico at 12’ish and there was some light traffic. Also some cyclists. As with cars, they have to let you pass. Can’t really understand the fuss about not meeting or meeting cyclists on this road. They will trie to sell you as many 25bol tickets as there is persons in the car. In reality you only have to pay for one ticket per vehicle. The president lady was mumbling it about 2 minutes and then settled for only one. There is another ticket checking booth on the way. The road is blocked off by metal chain. Show the guy the same ticket and he will let you pass. The same guy confermes also that in fact you only need to buy one ticket per vehicle
Report Check-In25 BOB, it's on the receipt. There's a second bit that's torn off at the second checkpoint. No issues riding a bicycle UP!
Report Check-InStarted uphill around 8:00 am. Boom was open and no one around. Going uphill is definitely better, especially if you are afraid of heights. This way you can only see the dropoffs once you have past them. A bit scary but doable. Took me about 3h with a lot photostops. Meet only 2 other local cars. Reaching the top, the biketours just started. See my other comment about paying for ruta de muerte: Pay more.
Report Check-InWe came through at about 2pm and paid 25bobs per Motorcycle. Very easy, the lady was very polite and confirmed we would only pay once. The toll is used to fund facilities on the death road and services for the local communities.
Report Check-InWe started uphill at 7:15am and only saw a couple of collectivos. No bicyclists. We didn't pay a dime! Total time exactly 2 hours in 17 miles.
Report Check-InWe started 15:30 going uphill. There were no check points and no charges all the way up.
We drove half way up and stayed overnight just quitely at the side of the road. We started again the next morning at 8:00 and finished uphill at 10:00 what was good because at that time traffic and especially downhill bikers started.
Started to drive the road around 3pm (downhill) nobody was working on any of the checkpoints, so we only had to pay the 5 bol at Corico.
There is also no traffic on the road at this time, no cyclists and maybe 3 to 4 other cars
Não nos cobraram nada de novo. Talvez seja porque ainda não é alta temporada. Cruzamos apenas por uma moto durante o trajeto.
Report Check-InComing from La Paz, I paid 25b after paying 15b at the first check point.
Report Check-Inwe paid 30 per car.we started at 2 and didnt meet any cyclists only few cars. nobody else to charge us during all way. we really enjoyed.
Report Check-InIts now 50bob per person to drive the death road, we found the roads around Sorata and the Yungas much prettier with the same steep drop offs and free to drive and no cyclists to dodge. The paved (new) road has also good views also, in our opinion its not worth paying to drive this road
