Description

Road from Taltal to here is one of the most epic road trips ever to be experienced. You can camp wherever you want. There is just 20people along here. Here is everything from moon landscape, surfing beaches, crazy mountains and cool fishing spots. It is a bumpy dirt road so high clearance is recommended. So untouched and unpolluted area. We even had fun driving off-road up a 300meter high mountain with our 4x4 car. So remote that you can do whatever you want.

Road is new and in perfect condition. incredible view. Highly recommend.

B710 is newly paved from I5 to the mirador (about 15km), then turns into an old paved road that will make the vehicle slightly rattle (15km). After this, for 5km or so, there’s loose gravel on top of the road - a bit more rattling, but overall, it’s very drivable! The final 8km to El Cobre is paved once more, as this is the beginning of the 1!

As for the scenery! Close driving through the desert mountains and from the mirador, you view the ocean while weaving down the mountain sides. I can imagine it’s very pretty driving through here during golden hour, but we enjoyed this route driving midday, too.

It’s an easy cut to El Cobre and there’s more pleasant scenery once along the coast.

Beautiful road through the mountains when coming from Ruta 5 and descending to Ruta 1 (using road B-700).

Condition is pretty good. On top, section is in gravel, but any car can do it (well unless you are driving a stance car..).

I guess this road may have been in different shape in 2015. Right now, most of Ruta 1 along this stretch of coast is hard-top dirt, with some rougher gravel in various areas. The B-70 that connects to Ruta 5 (in the north) is even asphalted from the mirador eastwards. This Ruta 1 section is suitable for any type of vehicle, although the hairpin turns at the lower section of the B-70 may be a little tricky for very big rigs coming/going to Ruta 5. Plenty of fishermen to be seen along the way (at least way more than 20 people). It's a scenic, but also rather constant landscape. To be honest, if this falls under your 'most epic road trip' category, I kind of feel a little bit sorry for you. But hey, to each their own :)

The pavement situation depends on how far up you go. Right now, the north most section is unpaved and quite rough in some spots.

Report Check-In

It’s all paved now. Very good road if you want to see the coastline in this area, you will find plenty of wild camp spots once you reach the coast.

we think its amazing road!! really good condition for any car. many k.m of us alone with the Pacific. the way up to join the new highway is beautiful. in Google maps it's seems like there isn't a road that continue , but it's there in good shape.

The RN1 is more adventures than the RN5, but I would neither use the words „epic“ nor „beautiful“. The road is mostly paved (with a lot of potholes from Papaso northward), but there are also some parts made of gravel (washboard) and dirt. Furthermore, there are many shacks of local people along the coast, as well as garbage. I would not recommend to drive along this route. To me, it was rather boring and disappointing. The area around Taltal is nice though.

Most incredible road I've ever ridden. Maybe I just got lucky (late evening heading towards the coast), but if you're in the area, it's a good paved surface with some gravel or sand on top, and breath taking everything. Nice kelp village when you finally pop out on the ocean.

The drive is amazing for sure... But 50km of the road south of El Cobre is in bad shape - quite rocky, bumpy and washboard in places. Slow going. Reminded us of parts of the Carretera Austral (that we never want to think of again). Still, the drive is definitely worth it !!

beautiful road with a wonderful view. there's a view point in the mountains to see mountains covered in fog. only 60km of ripio gravel track, can cover it in a 2wd. definitely worth the drive, the rest is asphalt.

I think the truth about this road lies in between the two previous posts... :-)

My experience... Coming from Antofagasta, I took the road B-70, and where it turns into B-710 (and you are inclined to continue straight) I followed the (old) B-70 to the right.

This road down to El Cobre is old but in fairly good condition. It is asphalt, but old and worn, so it just looks like hard dirt road. No holes, but sand on the side. Full speed on the straight stretches - careful in the curves. Dirt side roads here and there you can go explore on if you have the time :)

From El Cobre starts 50-60km stretch of dirt road - solid ground, but stretches are covered in sand. If you are on two wheels, drive safely! I think this is where it changes name to R-1.

After that, it turns into good dirt road (almost full speed) down to Paposo, where it joins B-710 and turns into Asphalt again.

Camping north of TalTal is a good place to rest :)

Dont know if we found the road you ment, but the Ruta 1 is not abandoned, not so remote and in quite good asphalt shape. Takes you along the beach and through the montains (quite steeply). Great desert landscape without any vegetation. Probably the nicer option then the ruta 5.
