Description

It is possible to drive the old pass road over Punta Olimpica. From the west it is a track which can be mastered by an excellent 2WD driver. The eastern side is EXTREMELY rough, 4WD with high clearence only. Only for excellent drivers and good car (landslides, steep, narrow passages, deep drops). Good for push bikes, bikes but NO trucks (too narrow) /// Alternatively walk the easy track up to the pass: from the west 40min up, 20min down (cutting switchbacks), 160 altimeters. From the east 40min up, 25min down, 230 altimeters.

Latest Check-Ins

Impossible to cross. Lot of rocks on the path and snow on the pass. Only a bike could do that with hike-a-bike parts. Best to take the tunnel and just do the beginning of the path on the Chacas side to see the beautiful laguna Cancaraca.

Report Check-In

Drive the tunnel! Any car or motor bike can drive this. We are a very small 2x4, our friends that we drove with are a medium sized 4x4 and a giant semi truck was driving behind us. The road from Carhuz to the tunnel is BEAUTIFUL and PAVED super easy drive. The only nonpaved section is through one of the small pueblos on the way up Same for the road from the tunnel to Chacas. Anyone can drive this- just take the tunnel! Such an easy relaxed drive due to the awesome paved highway

I tried to take this road by motorcycle. but i was stuked after 1 km going west. A piece of road is missing.
No way to continue further, even walking is impossible

Report Check-In

I rode a bicycle over this. You won’t be able to get a 4x4 through here anymore as quite a few boulders block the road. Moto should be fine. There was a 200m stretch of snow (30cm deep) at the pass in November.

Report Check-In

I don’t think this is driveable in any vehicle. I walked the 2.6km from the wild camping on the abandoned road and rock falls have blocked this road to all cars/vans. Off road bikes would still get through. Worth the hike up though!

Report Check-In

Did drive up from the east. Extremely difficult with my Defender - to be honest not driveable - too many rocks and big rocks!

Report Check-In

At the moment you can't do the entire route with a 4-wheeler (see photo). There's a narrow path through the rockslides wide enough for bikes or hikers. A little adventure if the nice tarmac bores you. ;)

Report Check-In

The difficult route refers to the road on top of the tunnel. The actual route, through the tunnel, is a sealed road in fantastic condition. No need to go via the old pass over the tunnel if you're vehicle isn't up to it.

Report Check-In

The description provided for this pass is accurate. In our 2x4 4runner we got partway up the eastern face before being stopped by rockslides. Coming up from the west we made it 80% of the way up before hitting an obstruction not worth pushing through. The views are great, and the tunnel is appreciated!
