From Mongolia to Russia, two people and a dog. We arrived at noon and it was the day after Eagle Festival, so pretty crowded. We had to wait two hours before we could enter the customs zone, but once we were in it all went crazy fast (10 minutes).

First we got our small white paper at the entry gate, then drive to the roofed area. Go upstairs at the building on the left and enter. The first window in front of you is for the exit of the vehicle. Then collect a stamp at the second window from customs. Go downstairs for small check of the car. When this is finished you go upstairs again and get the exit stamp in the passport. Afterwards drive to the last gate, give the white paper and you’re done. From here it’s 10 minutes driving untill the actual border.

During the car check a customs officer mumbled something about a veterinary being upstairs, but neither he or us were motivated to do something with that.

Mongolia > Russia. Left Olgii the day after eagle festival so we were expecting a longer que. We arrived at 9:00 and there were 80 cars/trucks in front of us. We were let u to the border area around 11:30. At 12:30 we left to head to the Russian border post. So 3, 5hours here which I don't find too bad for 80 vehicles in front of us.

Firstly, show your passports and vehicle document to the officers at the white building in between the entry and exit gate, best do this while you're still in line. When allowed drive in and head inside. Driver must go to the first window directly when entering, then one window further for customs stamp, then outside for car check and stamp, finally inside for passport control. Once all done you're good to go to the Russian border post

We arrived at 12.30 and paid the 50 rubles to a guy that came out himself. No idea what we paid for. We got in line and I went to the little house in the middle where they registered us. Unfortunately, we arrived just as the lunch break began, so we waited in line until 14.00, when they began working again.

After that everything was pretty easy. Quick passport check and stamp, then we filled out a temporary import form, then a very superficial car check, and we were ready to go.

Took little more than two hours in total, but most of the time was waiting.

Report Check-In

12:50 arrived at Mongolia checkpoint- no line. Paid 52p to the “disinfectant station” (a bone dry ditch) who gave us a receipt showing a fee of 1000 MNT. We handed over our passports at the next booth and waited about 20 mins. He saw the dog when returning our passports (and a little slip of paper) and asked for and signed/stamped the dog passport, too.

Short car inspection at the next station with a stamp on the paper from the first station then entered the customs office up the stairs on the left. This took 5 minutes and after a Mongolian stamp in the passport, was asked to go to the customs control window immediately behind passport control. Filled out a form for the vehicle and after a stamp, was allowed to return to the vehicle and exit. We kept the stamped vehicle form. The officials all spoke some English and were friendly.

At the last checkpoint is an English speaking woman selling insurance (National Agency). We paid 1500 rubles (<15€) after some effortless negotiation for a two month policy on our vehicle (1700 cc). Took less than 5 minutes.

Total crossing time 45 mins.

Indeed, get a paper ticket at the very first booth. Guy came out himself, didn't have to get out the car. Tickets says 2000 MNT, we paid 50 Ruble even though he wanted 100. There is no desinfection at all as the desinfection bath is dry. Waited 30 minutes before we were allowed to enter, car check just 5 minutes. Very quick passport check, then had to fill in a declaration form as we are leaving Mongolia to Baikal temporarily. Then we were good to go and bought insurance just before leaving the gate for €21.

All in all took 1,5 hours.

Report Check-In

Arrived at lunchtime, so we had to wait one hour before the border. Desinfection tax only $0,25 because we pay in Mongolian Tugrik (1000 MNT) Needed to get a ticket at the first little booth before we could enter the border zone. Better to go here while you are still in line.

Quick car check, show dog passport, stamp passport in the building up the stairs, then customs control stamp and we could leave. Total crossing took 1,5 hour.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 14 after a long wait on the Russian side. First stop: desinfection, 1000 MNT, we paid 50 RUB.

After that a 30 min wait and the usual checks, which were very quick and easy. Nothing to be paid on the 'official' side.

Insurance is now mandatory in Mongolia. We were waved down at the exit gate to buy it from 'National Agency'. Price list attached. The guy was friendly, but be aware: first tried to sell us 4000cc insurance instead of 2000cc, and after that he made a very coarse conversion to RUB for us. In the end we paid 2300 RUB for 79472 MNT, which is fair.

Report Check-In

The border crossing was easy, everything takes a moment, which is why everything took 3 hours in total, but had no problems. We paid $ 2 to disinfect the car, then it took a moment to register our e-visa (worked with the PDF on the phone), then we bought a car insurance for the equivalent of $ 18 and a 10GB SIM card for $ 5.

We were recommended the southern route to Ulanbator, which should be completely paved.

SUNDAY CLOSED!
Be aware of guys selling „mandatory customs payment“ / „sleeping fine“ slips when waiting to be let into the border area.
You do NOT need to pay anything when exiting Mongolia. The receipts they show you are outdated slips from a mongolian insurance company.
They call themselves „inspectors“ and the first one was trying to tell us we had to pay a fine for sleeping in our van, the second one said it was for customs.
Both showed DIY „identity cards“. They only approached foreign cars. Don’t pay!
The rest went very smooth and easy. Exit Mongolia 45mins, entry Russia was 1,5 hours. Different paperwork like on any other Eurasian borders, but all forms were in English, so no problem.
On Russian side they speak English.

(RU-MNG) Arrived at 10:50 at this small white building on your right, the guy says disinfection is obligatory and we paid him 50 although we didn’t believe it. Then drive on, white building on your left wantsq to see passport and car documents. You’ll receive the immigration cards, fill these out and park the car under the roof. Now your car will be checked. On your left is a stairs inside, where there’s passport control. It is chaotic inside! Children running around and people sending you to different desks. Just stay calm and follow steps 123. We left at 11:40. It was raining so no people outside the border trying anything. Pretty easy!

worst border crossing we have ever been to. the whole border crossing took 6+ hours. they close the gate at lunch time and told us to wait 2 hours (only ended up being about 1 hour). they fine you $50 usd for peeing in no man's land outside of the gate (even though the whole border crossing takes forever and rhey dont offer any toilets). they keep you in a room and refuse to tell you how much the fine is or how to pay it until 10 minutes before closing time of the border. the border guards are rude and are on a power trip.

Report Check-In

If approached by money changers at gate outside of Mongolian border, ignore them. I saw them try to scam some guys after changing money.
There is a bank inside the Mongolian immigration/customs building that exchanges at nearly the market rate.

Report Check-In

Arrived at 11am. Let us in after desinfection (1000T or 50R) and long check of the passport and the car documents.
Car check was done by a man from the military. Had just to open everything.
After the check of the passport they wanted to see the carnet de passage, which we had because of a visit to Iran. They didn't do anything with the carnet. Weird. They didn't gave us any document regarding the car since we plan to leave Mongolia the same way as we entered.
Left at 12, right before their lunch.

Report Check-In

The officials were polite and kind. The process went well and relatively smoothly checking into Mongolia.

Note, this border closes around 5pm and is NOT open Sundays (very very annoying). It opens at 9am and everyone queues long before. We arrived at 8am and were 10th in line. Fortunately, by 9:30 we were through the other side! They didn’t even search our cars. It was really cold though so maybe they were being lazy.

Heading back into Russia.
Arrived Mongolia gate at 8.15am

Very very slow.
Hope the Russia side is quicker

Report Check-In

After over 4.5 hours exiting Russia we arrive around 2pm. We finally exited into Mongolia at 6.30pm.
No problems all good just slow processing cars.

Report Check-In

We arrived just before their lunch break, so waited a long time too. All in all it took us a couple of hours to get into the country. No problems or anything, just a lot of waiting. We paid 1 USD per vehicle for road tax or import or something else, not sure. Would have been 1,000 MNT if we had any Tugriks already.
