Something not right?

Description

Primitive camping in a field. Some trees, dirt road to get there, then at the welcome sign right before a second railroad crossing there is a small welcome sign. The road in the grassland is not well established but an SUV was just fine. Windy but beautiful!

Beautiful dispersed camping. The roadwork mentioned in the previous comment is no longer an issue. Currently at the gate there’s a sign indicating that sheep are currently in the pasture and they have guardian livestock dogs, the sign lists do’s and dont’s in case you come into contact with them but we didn’t see any sheep or dogs. Did hear coyotes at night (hence the need for guardian dogs) and had 1 cow visitor checking us out at sunrise.
The train went by a few times in the night but it really isn’t that loud.
Once you enter the gate just look for the 2 track trail that goes to the right (it’s pretty overgrown right now) and follow that until you find a spot you like. Dispersed camping’s allowed within 300 feet of trail.
Be sure to check out the stars!

Currently blocked by some type of road work. Looks like they’re digging a bunch so idk when it will be done. Try looking up the national grassland motor vehicle use map. There are other areas to camp nearby

Road in, after the gate is super sketchy but we made it in our 23’ RV. Not for the faint of heart but worth it. A really cool spot, gorgeous stars at night. There are a whole lot of cow pies, though, so watch your dogs and your feet. Bring leveling blocks.

Nice spot for the night or two. Woke up to some friendly cows sniffing our camper. Beautiful sunsets!!
The trail off the road isn’t much of a trail than just low grass... very bumpy!! Doable with our 20’ camper.

Best place yet but super windy. The directions are accurate.

Take the small dirt road out of McLeod along the rail road tracks. Cross over the tracks, and be careful as the crossing is high and rough. When you get to where you would cross the tracks a second time, there is a barbed wire gate on your left with a National grassland sign. Go through that down the trail. You can camp anywhere up to 300 feet off the trail in this area. There were four trains with horns on the night I stayed here.

Beautiful spot, though smelly. Really enjoyed it. It's been literally one of my favorite spots, despite the smell! The train didn't really bother us during the night. And I'm a fairly light sleeper.

Note: you need to open the gate. It's closed so the cattle don't get loose, but you're free to open it and let yourself in. Just don't forget to close it!

Report Check-In

The roads were closed off, likely due to COVID, but wasn’t clear.
