Description

Police stopped us. Said we were speeding 7km before this point which was not the case. We were keeping to the speed limit exactly as we were aware of this corruption. Were told to come see the picture on a cellphone by their vehicle. The picture is of us leaving the previous town with the 50km/hr sign for going into that town pictured next to us. Complete and obvious corruption case. TSH30,000 fine with a receipt, but as we didn't have this amount on us, it was reduced to Tsh20,000 no receipt.

In this area, make sure to go 50km/hr for a bit after the "no 50km/hr" sign upon exiting each village. ie only speed up once you have seen the 50 km/hr sign in the opposite direction into the town you have just left appear or be in line with the "no 50 km/hr" sign you pass in leaving the town whichever comes last.

Will show you a photo of your car speeding (in the 70’skm, red writing) and possibly overtaking, on their iPhone. There is no paper work and they wouldn’t let us take a photo (of their phone) of our car apparently speeding. They had our license and made us sweat for 10 or so min. They then handed license back and we said sorry. Also say you have no cash and request paper work (which they won’t be able to provide)

They continue where. Said to us that the radar was 8km before - we can make sure that is our car in the photo bus impossible to see the number plate. The fine is 30000 tsh (limite is 50 and we were doing 56) and they said that if you drive a foriegner car you need to pay cash or with Phone. Say sorry and they will let you go without problems.

They are still here. Pulled us over and showed us our picture that said 73km. We luckily had started recording when we saw the 50 sign so showed him the video and he laughed and said okay you can go.

Still not sure when they take the picture of the car because we have been scanning the whole area and roads

Make you video or have proof even just from the phone. The picture he had of our car was 15minutes before we were stopped

PSA: Just wanted to share that at Police checkpoints such as this, it is best to take all money out of your wallet (except maybe less than 10,000tsh) and offer to pay with a credit card. The police have a receipt machine that looks like it would accept credit cards. Just act confused and keep trying to pay with your credit card in their receipt machine. Eventually they will give up and let you through.

This time police tried to fine us 30000 for overtaking a truck at a solid line but we refused paying as they didn’t have an image to prove it. We also showed them iOverlander and told that they are famous ;) It took 5 mins to get through and after all the police was friendly.

We intentionally stayed below 50 the entire way, even recorded the speedometer and speed signs. The cop pulled us over obviously with the intention to fine us because when he saw the gopro he asked if we were recording while trying hard to hide his face behind the snorkel, we said we were recording so he said thank you, you may carry on, without checking licenses or any further questions.

Still the same. The town they photograph you from is so far back you can’t remember what speed you were doing. They were pulling locals over at this one as well, but they probably make it look like tourists were speeding even if they weren’t. 30,000 fine with a receipt

Report Check-In

They stopped us on two motorcycles. Wanted 70,000 shillings. They settled for 20,000. They took our licence and held till we paid.
