If you drive from Embu to Tsavo or the Coast, Kitui is a good stop over point, with several hotel options. It is far bigger than you would assume from the map.
Intercounty Gardens Hotel has a sprawling restaurant and a pool, but rooms are small.
Still the best option between very cheap and expensive.
4.500 KSh for two, with good English breakfast.
Google maps finds it but also asking is not wrong as all maps are not yet updated. camping is allowed on their secured premises on the parking area. you can ask for a room to use toiletts/showers. price for selfcontained (parking on the small green inside) was 1000/vehicle, it seems to vary with manager. restaurant is available and ok, though nothing fancy. the only place for camping if you are on the way southbound or northbound from/to NBO/coast and want to avoid a reasonable part of the terrible and very dangerous main mombasa road ! even it's to add 2 hrs at least if you travel (from south e.g.) from Kibwezi through Kitui to Machakos, its still worth as the road to Kitui is a perfect and empty highway !

Camping not an option anymore. The lady manager wanted to charge us 23000shillings for b&b and refused that we’re sleeping in our camper in the parking aeria.
Also no wifi….
