This is one of those wow places you come across and where you just *have* to stay even though you hadn't really planned it: a big, level grassy patch at the border of an ink-blue lake and a view out of a Kurosawa movie. There are half a dozen sites here, but we liked this one best. In order to get to the sites you have to go past the Guardafauna office (200 m North of this site). We were told we were to register with the Guardafauna in any case (even if just passing through) but the office was not staffed. The track to the Laguna requires a 4WD mainly because you need tyres able to cope with the rocky terrain, other than that the drive is easy — just take it slow, especially on all the (at this time shallow) river crossings. The track is apt for real trucks, e.g. 10 or 12 tons. The scenery on the way is simply stunning. Bring everything (and especially fire wood) because there's nothing here except a fire pit and the most wonderful landscape.

This is one of many free camping spots around lago Varvaco Tapia. No services but a great view on the lake and the coloured mountains. A little wind protection by the hill backside.
Report Check-Inwe stay 2 night in de grassy area in the back of Guardia Faunas House. we were alone. the guys of Guardia Fauna give us potable water and we filled the Motorhome and also give us Internet in the evening. slow but enough for whatapp and emails. spectacular views and quiet nights.

Great spot to stay. Beautiful views and grat fishing spot. Friendly ranger offered us drinkable water.
Report Check-InThe blue lagoon and the colored mountains arround are amazing. There are several options at the lake for overnight. We stayed at coordinates S 36°25′54.7″ W 70°37′16.77″. Some locals are here for picknick or fishing. Nobody around at night. The road from Aguas Calientes to here is rough but ok also with 2WD in dry conditions. To continiue from here you need 4WD. See the descriptions at the near point „Laguna Varvarco - Barrancas Route“.
