Description

From Mombasa to the south coast or vice versa, you can only take the Likoni ferry. Often long waiting times on working days. Bearable on Sundays. The fare can only be paid using Safaricom's M-Pesa payment system. If you have an M-Pesa account, pay in advance with the USSD code * 721 #. The price depends on the length of the vehicle. For 8m length, it is KES 700, for 5m it is KES 280 for one trip. More information on https://www.kenyaferry.co.ke/toll-charges/
If you want to skip Mombasa and the ferry on the way from Nairobi to the south coast, you can use the new tar road from Samburu to Kinango (D545). From Kinango to Kwale the C106 is not yet tarred for 20 to 30 km, but from Kwale to the coastal road it is.

It's free for bicycles and the waiting time is short. One officer asked me if I got a ticket, I just said yes and kept walking. It's only the cars (and maybe motorcycles) that need to pay.

Give yourself plenty time getting through Mombasa & over to Likoni from Mombasa on the ferry. Also watch yourself by making sure you stick to the lane after the last traffic circle. We mistakenly veered to the left and it looked like we were trying to push in. We got a very aggressive official who was trying to intimidate us but telling us he would charge us and we would have to appear in court. I just kept apologising saying it was a genuine mistake, husband just kept saying ok fine us!!!
He eventually just walked away. Beware our begging whilst waiting to get on the ferry.
They apparently don’t want to take cash, but with no MPesa and only cash they had no choice but obviously had no change. 600Ksh we only had our last 1000.

We went over on Friday morning at 08:15. Waited two minutes to get on . 5 minutes across . No problems. 300 Kesh cash for single cab cruiser. No change , Mpesa is actually easier.

Arrived Monday around 3pm. Took us 1 hour the whole waiting + crossing. Paid 150 KES for a Toyota Fortuner. MPESA only. Prices are written nowhere!!! 😤 Someone will ask if all is good and guide you by foot to a small shop nearby if you don't have Mpesa. This shop will charge you 30 KES for doing the transaction.

It was 150 for a Landy (incl. 2 people). As said before, you can only pay with mpesa. We asked the people working there and they helped us to buy the tickets. Very easy and organised. Waiting time was around 15 min.
