Description

Free rec site near the San Josef beach trail. Maybe 10 sites... very worn down and muddy, but will do for a few nights. Fire pits and picnic tables (some broken) at all sites. Better pit toilets at the parking lot entrance to the trail. Also, a nice cooking shelter near the trailhead for when it’s raining!

Good spot to camp for a few nights to check out San Josef Bay. rec site is run down, and the pit toilets are not great, but okay for a few nights.

As described, free rec site with reasonably level and well spaced treed camp spaces big enough for a Sprinter perhaps a small trailer. The first site on the left as you drive in is the biggest and could accommodate a large camper. Pit toilets are gross and obviously uncared for but functional. The creek along side is murky and full off fallen log debris.
The forestry road from just south of Port Hardy is in reasonably good shape and in use by trucks. Took us 2 hrs to drive without lowering pressure in our tires. Stopped at the Pub in Holberg ,which is about 30 min from the camp site and really the only thing in Holberg, or between camp site and Port Hardy.
The Park parking lot in the park is very large and about 1km further down the road just past entrance to Heritage park campground. The parking lot says no camping. People register and pay here to use the back country camp sites on the beach and on the other trails. No cell service no water

Perfect place to stay to hike Cape Scott. We stayed 2 nights with the hope the torrential rains would subside but alas, no luck. I expect this place would be full in nice weather.

New gravel down on the campground access road and new picnic tables. Didn’t camp here as there was an overnight storm so opted for the car park at the trail head because of no trees. Stunning sunny day after the storm.

Quite a worn down site overall, but there are a few very nice clear and level sites among the ancient trees.
Beautiful forest with the river running right next to the sites.
Didn’t have an issue with mosquitos at this time of year, but I can see how they could be an issue in summer.
A few pit toilets.
Tables and fire pits at every site.
Worth a stay if you’re coming out to see San Josef Bay

Absolutely massive trees surrounding all the sites and gorgeous ferns and mosses - nestled in the most prehistoric looking old growth forest I’ve ever seen.

All sites back onto a creek and are very private, except a double site at the end which is more open and near a spot where you could launch a canoe or kayak.

Two or three sites had collapsed picnic tables, but being beautifully moss-covered sort of added to the charm.

The pit toilets were not great. Verging on unusable, but still glad to have them. No toilet paper but slugs are complimentary.

Access road was muddy and had some potholes but fine for a regular vehicle going slow. Saw camper vans and a couple truck trailers, nothing bigger.
