Description

A nice camping site next to the only clean river in Huehuetenango, further Zaculeu archaeological site. Directions: crossing the bridge to the left side there is a small groceries shop which belongs to this beautiful family. They sell tortillas, have meals and two simple toilets in the camping site area. The camping site is full of shadow and barbecues. It was a paradise for us!

Hermosa familia. Nos dejaron montar la carpa dentro de una casa para evitar las lluvias. Ideal para ir con perros. Y ella cocina delcioso!!!

Report Check-In

We first tried to get into Monte Carmelo across the street but wouldn't fit through their entrance gate by a few cm. We chose to stay on this site then instead. The family/owners are very nice and welcoming - the site itself is more a parking lot and can be at times rather loud due to coming and leaving trucks and the close by street, but it was fine for us and you can't really expect much more for the price. We left our rig here for three days while we went on a hike from Nebaj to Todos Santos without any issues.

Report Check-In

Super friendly and kind people. Little tienda right there, and a small futbol pitch. Little playground. Flat space for parking the rig. Big rigs good too. Very quiet night. We showed up at around 6:30 planning to go to the spot across the street (where we had stayed before) but the gate closes at 5:00 and the owner did not respond quick enough to our WhatsApp. Anyway, we liked this stay here for one night. Safe and good vibes. 10q pp, including kids. Very cheap place and a good place to stay before driving to the border.

Report Check-In

We first came here in 2018, now we're back in 2023 and it's still only 10Q pp. Still a lovely friendly family. Chicken bus to town centre goes every 20-30 mins from outside the gate, costs 7Q.

Report Check-In

Yes, the kids are cute and curious and yes, there is a chance to survive the smell of the loos. But in our opinion it’s far from paradise: There is a dusty dirt road passing by and, at the time we visited the place, it was very busy with heavy trucks from the early morning till late; just opposite locals wash their cars in the river. In terms of security we see no difference to the free place further down the river as the place isn’t fenced. Nevertheless good for one night.

I loved this place. It's so quiet, near to the river. Family Mauricio is so friendly. I was thinking stay just one day but at the end slept 5 days there. They have a big area for my dog so it was the perfect place.
you can ask for a shower, just say is a really cold water 😉

Report Check-In

this place was fantastic for us to stay for a few nights, relax in the beautiful and quiet grass field and enjoy the atmosphere of the super kind Mauricio family.
we really recommend it to anyone who is looking for a relaxed place to stay in Huehuetenango, which can sometimes be noisy and hectic in it's center.
only 10-15 minutes away from the center.
it's also cheap.

Report Check-In

Everything as described. Still 10Q pp.
No wifi.
Aún cobran 10Q pp. El lugar está muy bien y la familia es muy amable. No hay wifi.

Lovely family, very welcoming. We had breakfast at their shop and it was great only 30 quetzal for two people and coffee.

Report Check-In

wonderful welcoming family let us park in the big garden in front of their house. they run as well a little abarrotes and they are so happy to host overlender people from all over the world. perfect place to spend some nights and visit the mountain around and to relax after or before crossing the border to mexico. Mauricio and his family are one of the best people in this world!!! Go there and help them with the cheap quote they ask to stay here. pet friendly and you can fill up the tank if you need

Report Check-In

Very friendly family with 4 boys (!!!) and three boy cousins living next door.

EXCELLENT food!

Palapas with tables and chairs to stay dry and/or shaded.

Outlet at the tienda/restaurant to charge batteries.

Cold shower offered to me at the family house next door.

Nicest pit toilet I've ever seen, and I'd happily use it over most flush toilets I've seen in the last month.

Cute cats and kitten.

Reasonably fast internet, but sorta weak signal coming from their house next door.

Literally 400m walk to the ruins across the creek.

Lovely spot, friendly people, limited facilities but what do you expect for 10Q pp? 😀

Report Check-In

We stayed with familia Mauricio twice, on our way in and our way out of Guatemala - total of 5 nights. Super friendly and quiet place. They have a small tienda where you can get basics and some veggies. The lady also cooks lunches and has fresh corn tortillas on a daily basis. We paid Q20, but if you stay for a few days and if you buy some stuff at the tienda you might get a reduced price. Absolutely worth a stop!

Report Check-In

Still a nice place and friendly hosts, windy pit toilet however. 10 Quetzales pp.

Report Check-In

Unfortunately we had not enough time to enjoy this beautiful place. Mauricio and his family are super friendly a d welcoming. We arrived late (about 7:30 pm) after 8 hours of waiting at the landslide about 15 km south of Huehuetenango. This is the perfect place to relax before or after the border with Mexico. They take photos of all their visitors and make a album, cute idea :)
Still 10 Q p.P.

They love receiving overlanders!! 10Qpppn. And if the river is deep enough, let’s go for a bath!

Report Check-In

I found it really nice. There was a very cute cat. There was also bananas growing.

Report Check-In

We reached around 2pm after the immigration and passport stamped for 90days. Road was not so bad like we imagined until here.

This place got flat parking area with bbq and tables to enjoy. We walked ard the river which is not clean at all but a nice walk. Dog barking is all you can hear at night(a bit far away). We didn’t interact with the family much, they seem to be nice to ask if we wanted water or anything.

I guess it’s a good place to relax for a day and move on.

Report Check-In

we stayed here for one night, before we cross the boarder on Sunday. the family is very nice and friendly. this is only the football field from the family ground but for 20Qz. the night. they will build more opportunities for overlander....pool, showers and toilets but it needs time. very simple pit toilets...you can use it for empty yours. can fuel water...ask the family. follow the road to the archiological site....

Stayed for one night before heading to the Mexican border. It's definitely worth a visit if heading in this direction (and a lot easier to get to than the nearby camping/waterfall around 30KMs away). There doesn't seem to be much in terms of camping/parking noted for this area all the way to the border. We were greeted with big smiles just as the sunset and had a super comfortable night. It's a shame it was so short.

One of the family was really chatty with us as we had similar vans - got to practice my Spanish. Conversation turned in to sharing traditions for Christmas and he offered us a plate of Tamal to try. It was delicious and a very generous portion.

Toilets now have 'seats' made from cement so easier to use that the 'hole in the ground' situation. These are also very well maintained and managed.

Hospitality is excellent and the space is great. Right next to the river, flat playing field to park close to the toilets. There's some lighting and outside space to enjoy (small play area and picnic/BBQ seating).

The restaurant/tienda seems to be open majority of the day and is pretty popular with the locals. We had a mammoth amount of fruit and veg to use before the border so only tried the tamal but very tasty and a traditional dish for celebrations.

No wifi but claro top ups and signal we believe.

Wow! What a wonderful place, all the family is so sweet! They gave us fruits on the morning when we were leaving and make us signed in the golden book and took a picture of us. Great stop! Left just after the bridge, little wooden caban, the camping is in the soccer field. 10 Q pp

Report Check-In

We planned to stay there for one night and we finally spent 3 days in this amazing place. We took part of family time as cooking, playing with kids, making a firewood, have nice tchat with everybody. The food is really nice
this was our first days in guatemala and we'll never forget it.
20Q per night for one truckcamper and two people.
Bus stop to go in the city centre :2,5Q.

Mauricio and his family did invite us as friend, we really apreciated their welcome. You can go to downtown by foot to enjoy the market. Nice place close to the river, very quiet.

super nice family. the spot is great. we parked close to the playground and played soccer with the entire family.

They are so proud! Al those gringo's visiting their place. This is what iOverlander can do. No need to put energie in the spectacle challenge anymore. Within metres after you leave the bridge go left and you will see the shack in front of you.

Report Check-In

Update: Anyone going by here and heading North? I left my prescription glasses here. They'll remember us (white Mercedes Sprinter, email [email protected]). Would appreciate bringing them up.
Grassy field to park and pit toilet. Ran by a great family that cooked meals for us at Q15 each. They were awesome.
The place is very tranquil and safe.

Report Check-In

We had no trouble finding the place. dont knoe how you could miss it. Just turn left right after passing the bridge and ask at the little wooden shack, a little as usual street store on the right hand side (about 50 meters down the road). its owned by the guys in the store also runing the green flat with soccer field, kids playground ab bbq places. if noone is in the store, further up the hill of the little driveway before the shack (soccer place to the left off it) is their house, ask there. they were super, super polite, we payed 10 quetzal per person. they told us they plan to invest in more amenities. we also ate there, realy good lemonade and fresh enselada y pollo, if you are hungry just ask what they have, they only gave one option but it was good! they sell purified water in those big 18l bottles. the place is fenced in lots of kids play there in the afternoon, a great spot if you travel with kids or love to bbq. setting up tents is welcome it says, lots of even grass. only down is they only have a pittoilet (clean thogh). we really enjoyed it there quiet at night, no truck noises at all)

Report Check-In

Unfortunately we couldn't find the place. We crossed the bridge and asked at the little grocery on the left side, but the guy had no clue. Was a bit strange. So we ended up at the Hotel Fuente Real.
