Something not right?

Description

This is a garage shared by 2 to 3 mechanics. Ask for Mario Gil (phone Peru 00 51 982 794 903 and email [email protected]). We brought to him a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado that he serviced for the past 4 years. Great car thanks to his great work. He is at ease with motorbike, car and truck either gasoline or diesel. He knows Lima like his pocket so can easily find spare parts and reliable partners. We like to describe him as "European trust with Peruvian price". He is very friendly and behaves naturally with foreigners as he was the dedicated mechanics for the Austrian embassy for many years. Could be of great help if you have car trouble or simply if you need an advice on a car you intend to buy.

Although Mario himself was friendly and helpful at first I really can't recommend him for complex issues. I came in with an intermittent motor issue, I had already sought advice from a mechanic I used in Colombia who I really trust (Henry in Cali!) but Mario took me to his friend and the pair of them refused to listen to Henry and my opinion (I am a trained mechanical engineer) at one point stating "look, I'm the mechanic, do you want me to fix it or not? you aren't a mechanic and you don't know". stuck between a rock and a hard hard place I ignored my gut and allowed him to proceed to change all my spark plugs and charge me around $100 for it. The next day the issue re-emerged and Mario shrugged and said it was just one time and it was ok. Due to the lack of good mechanics here I decided to limp the car to cusco where Fernando (another quality mechanic) quickly agreed with the issue me and Henry saw (fuel filter blockage) and has since fixed it. Mario may be ok for reasonably simple issues but he was in the end he really let me down and I wouldn't trust him with any vaguely complex work again.

❗️Careful ❗️
We asked Mario for help regarding our brakes and an electrical issue. We went to two different workshops with him and their work seemed to be ok. Total price US$450.

After only 800km we had to have the whole breaks redone and the electrical issue appeared again. So not really happy about the outcome...

Mario was really kind and helpful, but perhaps they did bad work because they didn’t know our type of vehicle (Dodge Ram).
Sadly, we can’t recommend it!

Great guy, helped out with some small stuff like oil and filter changes. Went around with him and got good deals and all parts and oil change (97 sol incl 1 and a quarter gallon simple oil).

HIS LOCATION IS not exactly on the coordinates (I’ll try to change it). If you’re at the coordinates go into Avenida los Sauces and there is a huge metal light green gate, that’s where the garage is.

HOWEVER, he prefers people to call or email him and then he will come to your location (most stay in Hitchhikers hostel) and come pick you up. It’s easier because he lives a little bit out of Lima and can come by and also he knows the roads and traffic better, so it’s faster!

For sure the best mechanic we have encountered on our trip so far. Had to get our clutch repaired before heading back into the Andes and sent him an email on Saturday night. Even than he replied professionally incl prices (good!) to us right away. He came to us in our hostel to pick up the van. Together we drove to his working place and we left the van in great hands with him. The next day, when he came to return it, he found more issues (spark plugs and wires) and proposed to fix them. We decided to have it all done and make sure the car is ready to go soon. Apparently when he left, also the fuel pump broke and he fixed this for us as well. He made everything very very easy for us. We had some doubts for choosing a mechanic in Lima but he is all you need. He has a lot of experience with Overlanders and is very trustworthy.

Call Mario. He will come to you. He helped us 1. Locate and install new all-terrain tires, 2. Locate, re-size and install heavier shocks, 3. Direct you to best wash and wax facility, 4. Locate and find flu shot clinic, 5. Locate hand water pump, and drove us all over town to do this for extremely low prices. Reliable, knowledgeable and trustworthy.
