Description

They made an easier entrance for bigger rigs today. Here, on your left, when you drive towards the river. If it's still too narrow, drive 40 metres further to the other Parqueo place on the right. (San Rafael is nicer though).

Amazing visit into the canyon. Rainy season started but still very safe to walk and swim all the way. Did it with a guide for 15$ each (including lunch). Not disappointed at all. Great experience and luckily the weather was amazing.

we did the medium trip by ourselves without guide. if u can swim and have a medium level of fitness, it's easy.
walk back to the main road and turn right until you see the "National Monument sign". turn right onto the dirty road here.
first fork, take a right, second fork take a lwft and then follow the path until u get to the river.from here follow the river (rock hopping, swim, jumping). the last bit you could take a boat for a fee or just swim. short walk back to the starting point.
life jackets are in our opinion not needed (depending on your swimming skills and fitness of course), there is spots to take breaks and stuff.
cool half day activity!

Didn’t swim all the way up, just walked/rowed up to the furthest point before you have to actually start swimming. River, unfortunately, has garbage floating in it, like most in this part of the world. Cool natural environment though. The community here counts on tourism into the canyon. Hope it gets cleaned up a little.

We opted to go alone and without a guide and it was "fine", however we did get lost for awhile, ran out of water and had to ask a farmer for directions and water. To help those who want to go alone and not get lost like us :) see my attached screenshot of maps.me. Start on highway 1 in the upper left where I dropped the blue waypoint. From there hike 1.1 miles along a dirt trail (it's the blue line on the screenshot) until you reach the river (marked with the the flag on the screenshot). From there you walk, swim, jump, crawl and slither your way downstream along the canyon until you reach a big flat area where the water slows down and it feels like a lake. You'll pass several long slow pools before you reach this main lake so just keep swimming! Once you reach the main lake it's another 30 minutes swimming until the gravel bank where locals park row boats. Then it's easy walking along the river bank until San Rafael's farm (where re recommend staying - amazing spot). All said and done it took us several hours so get an early start. Best to bring sunscreen and extra water and pack everything, especially your phone, in a legit dry bag (or 2) otherwise your stuff will get soaked. Have patience and be prepared for an amazing adventure.

The fee to Canyon is 2 dollars or 60 Cordobas per person. You don't need a guide. There is possible to to the loop around as the most people are taking with a guide or just return from the same tracks as you went in. After you have bought your national park tickets drive futher down hill prox 500m to the parking on your right hand side. Parking fee is 15cordobas.
Hike starts there. Gross the river. Your shoes will be wet starting from here. After river keep left and in no time you will come to an fork. You can go to the right and do the whole loop or you can go to the left and keep near the river and backtrack your steps later from the same trail. Lots of swimming involved in canyon. After you see the small boats then keep to the left side of the river. Where the boats drop people off you have to start swimming. Not long stretches as you can still walk in most of the time. Lots of fun! Save the 25USD extra per person and do it yourself. Maps.me app has the trail marked all the way
