Description

On the Beyneu-Karakalpakiya road. The stretch from Beyneu to the border used to be a bumpy road but is now perfectly paved.
We arrived at the border at 5pm, there was no queue, we were waved through the gate immediately.
Exiting Kazakhstan was pretty quick and easy, passport stamp and handing over the car document, 15min later we were done.
Entering Uzbekistan : Queue of many trucks and about 15 cars. The soldiers made us jump the queue in from of all the cars (I felt a bit ashamed...). After filling up the migration card, passport stamped and car document filled, they briefly checked the car, asked to see our medicines and were welcomed in the country. First we got scared when seeing local cars being stripped off, but it looks like tourists get special treatment.
The soldiers on both sides were friendly and some spoke good english.
At the end it took about 2hours for the entire border crossing and nothing to pay. For cyclists shouldn't be more than 30 minutes max.

UZ to KZ. Took 2hrs with special treatment both sides. Don’t hesitate to come closer they will make you skip the queue. Everybody was friendly. At UZ border no question about slips or registration, pretty quick car check. The drone was hidden well. On KZ side it was more chaotic but eventually we got our TIP done, nothing to pay.

Report Check-In

UZ -> KAZ
6.5 hours, even including full tourist treatment at both sides: skip the line, personal guide, etc.
Unlike the handwritten forms in Russia, we received a printed TIP. Preparing a form in advance made the proces faster, but you don't have to do anything yourself if you don't want to.

Easy, 20 minutes as cyclist going Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. Two stamps: exiting Kazakhstan, entering Uzbekistan. Don't worry about the other queues; officials waived me to the front of the lines. If from US, might have to remind Uzbekistan officials you're eligible for evisa. All quite friendly and eager to chat, especially on the Kazakh side. "Good luck"!

Report Check-In

Arrived at 5pm with a motorbike. Was waived to go in front on both borders.
Leaving KZ took 1h, you need to go through different doors in the middle building to collect 4 stamps. Last one is baggage check outside. They started to check all my drugs and by being friendly I guess I did not have to open many bags.
Uzb side took 2h because it's not well organised. You have to collect the stamp paper first in the first building on the right, alongside a code for E-Registration. It says in the door the e-transit cost 10000som but I wasn't asked for it so don't loose time changing money. Then you go in next building on the right for passport check and a stamp. The middle building last window for vehicle registration, with your code. Get 2 stamps. Finally it's baggage check. Was asked to open even more bags but not all. I've got no drone but they didn't ask for it.
That's it!

Exit Uzbekistan/ enter Kazakstan.
When exiting Uzbekistan we had to pay a speed fine. Even though road conditions are so bad in Uzbekistan, apparently we managed to exceed the limit around Khiva. So be careul with that. The fine was 330 000 USZ and we ended up paying 165 00 USZ. Otherwise, they didn't ask for the hotel slips or any other proof regarding registration in Uzbekistan. They didn't ask about the drone and they didn't search the car properly. Yet, it took us 1 hour and 30 minutes just to get pass the Uzbek border. Don't expect eficency.
Then we had to wait 2 hours in "no man's land" because they only let in 5-6 cars per hour. Then another hour to do all the custom precedures. Overall, both borders took 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Passed from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan today. Was relatively straightforward. Took make 2 hours total. Lots of stamps from lots of windows and a fair bit of waiting around on both sides. We were on motorcycles and we’re always waved to the front of the vehicle queue saving us tons of waiting time. Everyone was very very friendly. Would take forever in car or truck!!!

Report Check-In

From Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. Both border good. It took us an hour and a half in all. As soon as they understood that we were tourists, they accompanied us to all the offices, making us pass in front of the line of people. Very friendly and kind. They were very amazed by the van, in Uzbekistan they didn't even go up to check. They just asked if we had any guns or medicine. I said that I have medicines that I have to take every day, but he would not see any medicines or the doctor's prescription

Report Check-In

We arrived in the early afternoon. The whole procedure took us about 4h. It was due to long queues.
Note to drones: they asked for it but did not check the car that much. They only opened all the cupboards and that was it.
For the car insurance you can definitely negotiate! We got one for 2 month for about 30 dollars.

perfect description from the-travely! thank you very much!

one thing to add: we had 35 liters of diesel in 10l plastic bottles in the passengers foot space which was no problem at all.

Additional information:
If you buy the sim card at the border, ask how much GB is for night and how much is during the day. UZMOBILE have packages with different GB for night and day. For example: from 43GB you can only use 14GB during day and 29GB during night (night means from 24:00-06:00).
See picture attached.

From Kazakhstan to Usbekistan. Took us about 2,5 hours in total.
leaving Kazakhstan: 45 minutes
When we arrived at the border about 5 cars were already waiting in front of the first gate. As soon as the soldiers saw that we are tourists, we could skip the line and drive through it. Passengers have to go directly to the passport control to get the exit stamp (right door at the big house). As tourist I could skip the looong queque of waiting people there too. My partner and the car had to go to the „car check“ - a soldier will quickly look at the car and give you a stamp on a small paper. The he had to go to the customs (left door at the building) and show the car papers. There they also collected the customs document from Russia (eurasian customs union). Then he also went to the passport control (right door) where he could skip the line of waiting people too. After that we were ready to drive to the last gate. Another passport and stamps check - done.

we waited about 1 hour to get to the first usbek gate (they were having a breakfast break). Arrived at the gate immediately we could skip the line of waiting cars. Passport control & checking the data of the car inside the house (passport stamp). Then car check at customs. They checked the car very, very thorough (for us it was the most intense car check ever. But we already knew that from other travelers).
Note: since 2023 drones are forbidden in Usbekistan - they will ask & search for it! So be prepared!
Driving to the next window where they added the data of the vehicle to the computer.
Another passport check at the last gate - done.

Both on kazakh and usbek side the soldiers were friendly. We definitely had a „tourist bonus“. If they wouldn‘t let us skip the lines the border process would have been way longer.

For most europeans no need for visa to enter Usbekistan.

Right after the border there are people exchanging money and selling sim cards and car insurances. They are very pushy but you can negotiate.

Car insurance: 60 days Toyota Hilux for 250.000 som
Sim card: valid for 1 month 43GB for 150.000som

Report Check-In

Arrived at 7 am at the kazakh side. Entered Uzbekistan around 7 pm. Officials were mostly friendly. Searched the car quite thoroughly. Sadly they took away our drone. Apparently they are illegal since 2023.

Report Check-In

The road from Beneuy to the border is now very good. We travelled from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. border crossing took five and a half hour. Most of the time we waited on the Kazakh side at the passport control. Car search was moderate

Report Check-In

The border is open. Easy border crossing. Get some extra fuel for the next 400km, there are only gas stations (no fuel) in between. And be prepared for bad roads.

Report Check-In

The border is very much open in both directions, though I heard from friends when they tried to cross a month ago that it was temporarily closed to tourists for some local reasons.

Pretty smooth crossing from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan, though in total it took about 4-5 hours for two motorcycles. it seems like maybe they have vehicles go in only one direction at a time, because we had to wait at the Kazakhstan border for about 30 minutes while cars came out in the opposite direction, before we could enter. a soldier will check your passport at the gate and give you a white slip of paper that you'll need. then we were directed to park ahead and to the right for a moderately thorough inspection of your bags. then proceed inside the left entrance of the building to counter #4 where you'll ger the first of 4 or 5 stamps you'll need on the white slip of paper. go outside and enter the right door this time and walk towards the end for a check of your passport and vehicle documents. make sure you tell them you are in a vehicle - my friend did not and was stamped in as a pedestrian which caused some confusion and delay. get another stamp on your white slip. on the way out a guy came out of an office and gave me another stamp, dunno what that was about. I think we got another stamp somewhere else along the way. anyway, back on the bikes and done with the Kazakh side.

onto the Uzbekistan side where we passed the trucks in a lane to the right, through a cesspool of gnarly water. into a building and at a counter called sanitation check a guy gave us a stamped piece of paper - we didn't have to do or show anything. back on the bikes to the next building, which is passport control. finish there then roll forward and go to the kiosk for customs declaration and vehicle document control. then prepare yourself for a thorough search, they went through all my friends bags, but then only a couple of mine. after that we were free!

everybody on both sides was professional and we didn't have to pay anything. nobody spoke English.

enjoy!

KAZ->UZB
The border is CLOSE. No one can enter except trucks. Even Uzbekistan passports.

We needed to drive all Kazakhstan to the Tashkent border. But there is a shortcut off road. From beynau to shalkhar
Ask the officer at the border

UZB -> KAZ

Uzbekistan side took 30 mins. Very friendly and easy.

Kasachstan side very chaotic and slow. Took us 3 hours. Border patrol and customs officers were very friendly so. One guy only checking a little bit the inside of our Bus. He asked to 'buy' our small boom box. It was broken anyway so we gave it to him. If you come from Tajikistan you need fill a new customs paper for your vehicle. It's booth number 4 on the other side of the building, where people go the other direction.

Everyone was very friendly to our dogs. Nobody cared of the papers or anything.

Road to Beyneu is perfect tarmac now. Also many stretches on the uzbek side are really good. 90kmh and more possible

Report Check-In

The road from the border to Bejneu was almost finished 03.08.2019, only the last 6 km before Bejneu were horrible.

Report Check-In

It took us 4 hours to cross the border (together with buying insurance after the Uzbek border). Kazakh side was a chaos, there was a lunch break that lasted 1.5h during which no one worked... Be prepared! :) Uzbek quite fast.

After the border we bought an insurance: 50 000 soms for 15 days/motorcycle. 60 000 for a car.

We also exchanged money: 1$ for 8200 soms.

Entering Kasachstan:
- don’t forget insurance which is (apparently) after the border. We got fined by police, had to drive to Atyrau to buy it.
- law requires driving with car lights on, even during the day.

Report Check-In

We arrived here at around 8pm and left two hours later. The uzbek side was very easy. They didn‘t even check our van. The kazhak side is much longer and disorganised. First you have to do the paper stuff: car ID, passports and of needed a power of attorney for driving the car. As a passenger i could even stay in the car beside the driver. Important: You should always ask the staff what to do next. Usually they are very friendly and try to help as best as they can. It is very helpful to say that you are TOURIST. You can skip the line. No need to wait behind the trucks or local cars. It is always nice to speak at least a bit of Russian and smile. Stay cool! After the document checks and waiting for your turn they will check the car - but very briefly. Stay friendly and they will like you and let you pass quickly. We didn‘t need to show any registration papers as it is now much easier since all European citizens have a visa-free entry for 30 days since january 2019.

KAZ -> UZB.
road on Kazakh side took 1.5 hours from Beynau to border. Parts are great, other parts 20 km/h. New road will be finished maybe in a year.

Queues of multiple km's long, but drive to front and start talking to some guards or locals. Quick you will be admitted inside the gate. Here enter the building and register. You need migration card, car passport and regular passport.

After that, don't join the queue with the locals for the thorough car check. (before the house that says "GOOD LUCK". I waited for 1 hour before realising that the guards could do a quick check and then let me leave. So go talk to some guards again, say that you're a tourist and they will search your car briefly.

Then you go onto nomansland in front of Uzbekistan. Here, skip the queue again and go talk to some Uzbek guards. Say you are a tourist and they let you in. Go to the dodgy white building and give documents again.

You will be pulled in front of locals again and Uzbek guards search your car briefly. Then, go.

The Uzbek road is terrible and it took us 4 hours to get to the closest hotel.

Uzbek to Kaz. Took 1.5h. Easy, friendly people. We passed all lines with the tourist status.. and seems it is normal here.

Report Check-In

Very Busy when we arrived from kazachstan, but nobody looks weird if you skipp the whole line (guards called us from the moment they noticed we were tourist) nomansland was full of cars So I walked to the guards at the gate when they hear "tourist" they find a way to let you pass the others... don't feel to guilty, the other cars are all importing secondhand stuff from russia going up and down this road constantly (I guess they know tourist aren't stripped like them and don't take up to much time)

Report Check-In

Very easy. Exiting Kazakhstan took perhaps 30 minutes. Remember to get your customs form stamped out.

Entering Uzbekistan very friendly and easy. "Welcome! We are glad to see you!" We waited 30 mins in the queue before realising tourists can skip it. Very brief search. Didn't check any bags or ask about medicine.

Beyneu to border road/track very bad, dust, very rough, very slow. Brand new road is under construction.
Very tricky indeed at border leaving Kazak, looking for bribe opportunities. I was held for two hours, they wanted a non existent document with a stamp on it. I sat & read my book they gave up and let me go. Hide good cameras & valuables, leave old stuff on display.
Uzbeck border took fifteen minutes - easy. Road to Jaslik is bad. Café stop is good, see the notorious Jasliq prison across the road...

We did it from UZB to KAZ a lot of trucks and UZB cars queued. But with the tourism bonus you can skip the waiting.
You need to fill out the "exit customs decleration" there should be less value (US$) then on the "entry". UZB Custom control was more interested in the car then in the goods. About 6 people around the car.

We got stuck in no mans land for 45min. If the no mans land was not fully stuffed with cars the gards would had let us bypass the queu.

KAZ the same the gards gave us also a special threatment.

After 3 hours everything was done.

You can change Tenge to So'm before the boarder. We changed only 2000 Tenge as we were not sure about the rates. After we were very happy to have a bit of So'm so we could vuy food. Would have changed more if known that the price is fair. They give you a rate of 1 Dollar = 8000 So'm, best rate at the moment.
