Description

Very quick and easy border crossing. Nothing to pay entering or exiting Georgia. Entering Armenia, small vehicles (max 6 seaters) have to pay road tax of about 35 EUR depending of the exchange rate. Insurance is compulsory in Armenia and is available just after the border or in advanced online at http://www.aswa.am/ The road on the Georgian side is pretty bad (november 2021: not anymore new road) between the border and Ninotsminda. But then the landscapes all the way to the Borjomi region are very beautiful.

Georgia -> Armenia with 10t truck
~2 hours

Georgian side: quick passport and car check, passenger has to go through building on the right
Armenian side: passenger has to go through building on the left, immigration is quick, customs was slow, made us go onto the scale and through X-ray, after that we went into the building on the left, paid 9800 DRAM for the truck at the bank( you can pay cash or card), then took receipt with passport and car document to customs window left from the bank counter. Officer will type everything directly into the computer, no forms to fill in. After that they direct you to the insurance building.

we crossed the border from Armenia-->Georgia, really easy and only 45min.

I would not say that this is a ‘quick’ crossing. We crossed from Georgia into Armenia. Although there weren’t that many people trying to cross it took us more than 3 hours. Especially the last station where you have to ‘import’ your car was painstakingly slow. They didn’t seem to understand the documents presented. (I do drive a car registered to my company). All staff are very friendly though so just.. go with the (slow) flow.. :-))

Border crossing from Georgia to Armenia. Relatively easy however very lengthy process with lots of paperwork. Exiting Georgia was smooth. Entering Armenia, it took the border official some time to enter our motorcycle details. Then we were directed to park our motorbikes and go inside to pay for the import of the bikes at a customs desk. The men at the customs desk direct you to the Ararat Bank stand just next to their desk to pay—cost 5,800 dram (about £12) for one motorcycle. We then took the receipt from that payment back to the customs men to show them we paid. Then they entered our motorbike info into their system and we got a customs doc. Then directed to the insurance broker at the small brick building to the right of the border crossing. We were told that it cost £18 or 8,900 for 15 days for 1 motorcycle. Not sure if we got ripped off or not - but we didn’t have internet to check anything and couldn’t be bothered to argue. The insurance man only accepts cash, but does accept both Georgian lari and Armenian dram. All in all, probably took about 1.5 hours.

Georgia - Armenia: Easy crossing (total about 1h), all staff friendly. Armenien side first temperature check, second passport, third customs had a look in the back of the car and asked us to open the roof tent, halfway we stopped. Then paid 9200 DRAM (24 €) to import our landcruiser. Insurance at the brick building was a total scam. The guy there asked 8000 DRAM (20€) for the car and another 8000 DRAM for a driver. Also after I asked him that I thought it was a bit much he showed me the form in Armenien to show me the numbers. We left and asked a friendly guy in town about the insurance and he told us that we got scammed:
We needed to pay only 8000 DRAM for 30days.
When we went back the guy was quite nervous and gave us the wrongly charged money right away without any discussion.
Apparently you can ask for a form in English.
Safe travels!

It took us almost 3 hours to get through customs and buy insurance, coming from Georgia. Georgian side quick, Armenian side slow (understaffed). We paid 24 dollar for our truck (Mercedes-Benz Vario). Be assertive to Russian drivers trying to get in front of you. Road o Georgian side is fine.

Georgia-Armenia. We need 15 minutes in Georgia and 75 minutes for the entry process in Armenia. Third times they check our Van. They weight our car and make an x-ray scan. We were almost alone at the border. They have some understanding problems with the swiss car documents.
All people were very friendly

Georgia -> Armenia Good roads at the Georgian and Armenian site. Al little bumpy at the Armenian site but not more than you find in the rest off the country. Very helpful officials. Leaving Georgia was no problem. They asked for a PCR test. I showed them the test we used for entering the country (1 week old) and my vaccination certificate and that was oke.
Entering Armenia: we had to show:
- Covid vaccination certificate
- car papers (our car is registered at a company name so I have to show drivers permission)
The asked for insurance but didn’t check. We bought it in advanced online http://www.aswa.am/
We had to pay Tax at the customs €16,- or 9000 AMD You can pay with Euro Dollar. The temporary import is valid for the periode of 1 year.
The Armenian customs checked the car inside and outside.
Last but not leased: It’s cold and windy in November

Edit: the first 15 kms after the border into Georgia are really good. After that, it's getting bumpy with some big holes. Still wouldn't describe it as horrible, but it's not great.

Fastest border crossing we had. 5 mins each side. The road on the Georgian side is fixed and really good. The Armenian side isn't too bad, they are improving it, but it's just how most roads in Armenia are. We crossed from Armenia into Georgia.

Crossing Georgia to Armenia. Georgia is straightforward. Armenia you do passport control first and then need to do customs clearance. Had to pay 5500 drams for temporary import, can pay at the bank there using credit card. They also told them I need to buy insurance, but I got mine online beforehand (2000 drams 10 days) and they didn't check. Road on the Georgian side is horrible but they are fixing it. Armenian side isn't good either.

Coming from georgia no problems. Georgian side fast passport scan and fast look in the van.
Armenian side takes some time, a lot of different stops. But all very friendly.

The insurance in in the same building around the corner. It was 6000 dram for my van. And he told me it is 3000 dram for a bike.
No corruption or anything. I got a receipt for everything.

Roads on Georgian side were really bad. Deep holes in the road in the last 20 km and snow drifts.
