Description

UPDATE April ‘24:
I first visited the Dunes at the visitors center/museum this morning and paid the fee there. Then drove further north along mex 8 to enter again at the Estacion Biologica. I asked about the land dispute and they said it is solved. I did have to register again and as I planned to exit at mex 2 north entrance they asked me to send a message when I was out of the reserve. They apologised for the bad roads due to heavy rain earlier this year, but besides the washboards and occasional small washout it wasn’t all that bad.

As of February 2020 there is apparently a land dispute between the reserve and some local landowners regarding the road into the reserve to this location. The road to the craters at Mex 8 is NOT accessible, it's blocked with boulders (April 2022). You can still get in at KM 52 on Mex 2. At the visitor center Schuk Toak on Mex 8 we were told to pay at the entrance on Mex 2, but we didn't see anyone there to pay the fee to (apparently 50 pesos per person per day). We weren't asked to register either (not at the visitor center nor at the Mex 2 entrance). It seems that the logistics keep changing every other month, so please help to keep this info updated.

The road is rough washboard and it's as hard as beautiful. 4*4 not necessary, there were locals with city cars, but high clearance is a plus. The place is amazing, you sleep surrounded by cactus and ash volcano mountains. Enjoy!

Latest Check-Ins

This campsite is amazing right in between a lava flow and the summit of Cono Mayo. I was the only one here but it is big enough for several rigs.

The reserve itself is sooo beautiful, probably the most amazing place I have seen sofar travelling Mexico for 4 month already.

APRIL 2022 UPDATE

It's a little of a logistical hassle to get here. As others have stated there has been a land dispute at the Mex 8 entrance and it's closed, so the entrance at Mex 2 is the only way in and out now. We went to the visitor center Schuk Toak on Mex 8, they gave us some information on how to get here, but we weren't asked to pay for a permit. They did say we had to pay at the entrance on Mex 2, but there was nobody to be seen when we arrived. It's a beautiful area and well worth a visit, if you know how to get here. I uploaded two screenshots of the roads that are now in use according to the visitor center. Pay close attention when you drive back from Cerro Colorado and don't drive south towards Mex 8. Very soft sand and the road there is blocked with boulders (because of that land dispute).

Road from highway 2 to here is open. I saw no closed signs to here or the craters. Yes, you need to register and pay at the visitor center, then another 50 pesos for the caretaker at the entry gate at highway 2.
Met a local driving towards highway 2 who said he was coming from Rocky Point (in a Toyota sedan!). I don't know what road he entered from down there.

As of February 2020 there is apparently a land dispute between the reserve and some local landowners regarding the road into the reserve to this location. You can still check in at the visitors center and camp at the sand dunes, but all the roads into the craters are currently inaccessible. BTW, camping in the park is NOT free. You can go check out the museum, but must pay 60 pesos per person per day for your permit to enter the reserve.

Tried to access from Mex 8 and Mex 2. Gate at Mex 8 says road closed until future notice. there was a guy at the hut who said that the road has gotten completely washed away. From Mex 2, we got about 5KM in on a nice dirt road before we were meet with a road closed sign at the fork leading to the crater and campsites.

You should be able to stay along the dirt road leading up to the sites from Mex 2, however we did not.

Report Check-In

We came in from Highway 2 and didn't make it all the way to the official campsite. It was slow going on a washboard surfaced dirt road. We camped on top of a dune a little past a 'camino cerrado' sign. Super quiet, flat with otherworldly views.

Beautiful campground with picnic tables and no amenities other than cactus, volcanos, and a very quiet desert. Be sure to hike around the El Elegante crater before you arrive at the campground. If you’re on your way to Puerto Penasco, be sure to stop at the Biosfera’s visitors center. There are nice nature trails, an excellent museum, and a short film about the ecosystem.

Report Check-In

Nice little campspot in the NP del Pinacate. There are only a few firepits and benches. No toilets. Sourounded of volcanos, a little trail starts at the campground with a beautiful view at it's end. If you come from the Mex2 the road is bad, but doable with high ground clearance and no 4WD (~12km). It's very quiet, we camped alone.

You can stay overnight at the Reserva for free, you just need to register at the visitor center (before 5pm). The road requires high clearance and it's as hard as beautiful. The place is amazing, you sleep surrounded by cactus and ash volcano mountains. We were alone here. Enjoy! (americaravana.com)
